San Diego Chargers D...Anything to see here? (1 Viewer)

I was able to combine them with TB at the end of my draft and I didnt realize that they finished 7th in my league last year. After a quick scan of their team it looks like they have several young guys that seem to be coming up but I know little about any of them. Can anyone offer some insight? Can they make it into the top 10 again this year?

They're a defense. They've got some young talent, to be sure. I would have called them an "avoid" last year, but we see how that played out.

The reality is pretty much this: in standard-type scoring leagues, defenses tend to cluster together pretty tightly, almost like kickers, until you factor in TD's. And the TD's are so hard to predict that it's almost not worth trying.

Yes, some are so loaded they're almost assured of finishing top third, even if they hit a TD dry spell. And some are so barren, they'll probably blow even if they have 6 TD returns. But for the most part, the good D's at year's end will be the ones that were "good enough," and then had more than a few big play TD's.

SD is "good enough," so they've got about as good a shot as anybody.

Chargers had a fairly significant makeover on D. They pretty much scrapped the secondary (minus Weddle), added Freeney, and added Te'o at ILB. It's going to come down to how the young guys gel in the secondary as to whether they can make it back in the top 10. Shareece Wright in particular has looked great in camp and preseason (again) and looks like he could develop into a top corner.

The key though will be Liuget and Kendall Reyes breaking down the pocket allowing the OLB's to get to the QB. Then there is Donald Butler and Weddle up the middle. It's a very strong D up the middle actually all around. It's the edges we are concerned about.

So yea, LOTS of youth on the D. Should be interesting to see how they perform.

How did Te'o look in pre-season? I could look it up, I suppose, but would rather hear a fan's take...

Didn't play aside from two series. He got a foot strain and has been out of commission for three weeks. Likely back by week 2.

So...absent, then. Alas.

They're unowned in all three of my leauges, so probably worth keeping an eye on. I'll root for them, though. Lightning is cool.

If anyone cares, this is the combo with them and TB:

NYJ | PHI | TEN | ARI | OAK | PHI | JAX | CAR | SEA | MIA | MIA | DET | CIN | BUF | SF | OAK | KC
