Im staying at the The Westin Gaslamp Quarter later this fall. Any recommendations for eating/drinking? Any interesting sights in the area?
From that location it'll be difficult not to find good eats and interesting sights.
Any specific recommendations in terms of casual seafood (crab shack type place?) Happy hour places? If I want to check out the beach area and dont have a car.. Ocean Beach or Pacific Beach? Cab or should I rent a car for a day?
What's your vice? Hot 22 yr olds and the meatheads that follow? PB is your beach. Great beer, fish tacos, and a laid back hippy atmosphere? OB is where you want to be.

OB it is - thanks.

Groupon for this today. Anyone ever gone on one of these tours? For $50 looks interesting...http://anothersideofsandiegotours.com/i-6404469-san-diego-city-baysegway-tour.html
I guess that would be alright, but SD is more about finding a cool spot and chillin rather than making sure you see all of it. The downtown area is not as interesting as NYC or SF for example.

Are most of the spots mentioned previously still good places to visit?

I'm heading out to Coronado on Tuesday for a conference I should have a day of free time to do whatever I want

Looks like we're planning a vacation out to San Diego in August. We'll spend a couple of days visiting relatives in Long Beach and then looking for a place where we can spend for a week closer to San Diego. We're traveling with kids (5 and 7) and they'd probably like to see Sea World and San Diego Zoo, etc. Also, we want time where we can hang at our hotel or rental condo and relax poolside or beachside sipping cocktails in a nice setting. Sooo, what area of town would be best for this? What are pros/cons of La Jolla vs. Mission Beach vs. doing something further north in say Oceanside? Is Laguna Beach too far away?

First and foremost is having a relaxing set-up and we'd probably prefer to rent a house or condo with pool. Second priority is access to the attractions and we won't mind driving 30 minutes to get to downtown or Balboa.

I'd recommend renting a place in Encinitas and also going to Legoland. Kids will probably enjoy Legoland over the other places if they are into Lego at all.

Encinitas is just south of Carlsbad (Legoland), has nice beaches, restaurants and shopping, and is 30mins from Balboa/Zoo/Sea World.

Thanks. This is just the kind of info I was looking for. I have girls who don't care about Legos, but I'll look at the attractions there and see if there's interest. Of course, after much ado to finally plan a trip to SoCal, our L.A. relatives decide to come visit us here in Chicago at that time. Completely derails everything. Don't you love family?

Bumpski

Heading to Seal Beach for 5 days and Carlsbad for 3 days end of March. Will be visiting with family and hitting beach, Disneyland, La Jolla as definite stops. Legoland is likely but will depend on how Disneyland goes. I have Beachwood BBQ and Pizza Port on my sites for BBQ and beer selection.

Our girls are 5 and 7. Anything off the beaten path that is interesting to do/see (Orange County or San Diego)? We've done most of the typical tourist stuff in San Diego and Los Angeles. Are there any towns on the coast where you can park your car and shop/bar hop at outdoor restaurants? Similar to like a Laguna Beach or Hermosa Beach strand.

Is Belmont Park / Mission Bay worth some time?

You'll be in Carlsbad, and that's decent. Check out Pizza Port! San Clemente may also work for you if you are looking to walk around a beach/town area.

As I mentioned, Encinitas is good for that kind of thing. And if you are going to La Jolla be sure to check out the La Jolla Cove area for some nice beach.

Mission Bay is meh. The park is kinda ghetto, avoid it. I'm not familiar with Belmont Park though.

Just do Sea World when you are down there or if you want to check out a beach town in that area do Point Loma.

Cabrillo National Monument http://www.nps.gov/cabr/index.htm is a great place to take the kids. Stop in Ocean Beach grab a lobster taco on the way in or out.

thanks for the input guys. Very helpful.

I'll def look into the Cabrillo monument. Seems interesting and I haven't been there yet.

If we are in Carlsbad on a Thurs, Fri, Sat - is there any thing we should prioritize for weekdays over weekends (pretend we will be hitting Legoland, La Jolla and Sea World/Loma as our 3 stops)?

Legoland on a weekday, Sea World on the weekend. Legoland can suck when it's too crowded and I've never had an issue with Sea World on a weekend. If anything it is more pronounced now... The Lego Movie is making Legoland more popular and Blackfish has made Sea World less popular.
