San Francisco 49ers 2013 thread (SEE NEW 2014 THREAD) (1 Viewer)

Lets not forget that Kaep still doesn't have a full season of experience...he still has lots to learn and will have games like this.

And while I haven't watched any of the game except the lowlights on NFL network, I'm pretty surprised at our lack of a running game...every off season people talk about how Gore is about to hit the wall and start a downward spiral in production...perhaps it is finally happening? I'll wait to see what happens vs Indy next week before I decide if that's the case, but I don't think Hunter is the answer. I DO like him as a change of pace back, but I dont see him as a back who can carry the load. What's L James status? Will he be back soon? I'm not a fan of RBBC but at this point, maybe its with a try.

It really sucks not having Crab. Him, Boldin, and VD would be a nice trio for Kaep to have right now.

You really can't compare the wins over SEA to the currents losses. Even the last win had poor QB play, right after Smith threw 3 INTs to 0 TDS against NYG. In those 2 games alone he went 4 INTS to 1 TD. So it wasn't like small ball was the "magic formula" to beat SEA. They adjusted to Smith like they adjusted to Kaep. Kaep also had a lesser team around him than Smith had, and like you say, he still doesn't have the full health of the roster behind him now.

No excuses for Kaep playing like a deer in headlights though. The loss isn't on him solely, but he was outmatched by SEA's defense. Not that Wilson tore it up last night either, but he made the few plays he had to at least.

Totally agree that Alex Smith's game is more the answer to beating the Seahawks, but Alex Smith wouldn't have gotten the Niners to the Superbowl last year either.
If you guys mean to shrink the offense down, well that's more on Roman. Smith has 1 TD to 1 INT against SEA in all three of those games. 15-20 for 125 yards in one game isn't "keeping a team off balance with the pass".
It's not as simple as "keeping a team off balance". The seahawks play a game of attrition and thus the "human" factor matters greatly. While physicality is always mentioned in these 49ers/seahawks games, I think the mental aspect is frequently overlooked. You complete 3-4 yard passes, you make the defense work and tackle, you get first downs, you crack block and hit the DBs, you frustrate them. Maybe they end up playing undisciplined, maybe they start to second guess the play calls and assignments, maybe your D gets the ball back for you adding to their lack of confidence.

All this cannot happen if your offense can't stay on the field. And worse yet if you turn the ball over, the things I just wrote above start happening to your own defense and the snowball starts rolling downhill the other way.
All those 3 games were won by FG's, with the sole game broken open in scoring due to Ted Ginn. If you're doing an end around with your analysis saying that dinking and dunking you way into FG range is the way to beat Seattle at home, well I think SEA would have an answer for that by now.

BTW: in 2012 against SEA, Smith's was 0-2 in deep targets. The only two targets he threw deep. That's game manager stuff.
Considering that was the last time Seattle lost at home, I would say it's as good a plan as any. I would've loved some field goal chances against seattle last night.

Don't get me wrong, Smith is in no way a superior QB, but his style of play was IMO better suited to carrying out the game plan to beat the Seahawks. It should also be noted that in the latter 2 playoff games, SF got off to incredibly slow starts on offense as well. Maybe further evidence that Kap was trying to force the issue. However those teams did not have the secondary and a ravenous defense that feeds off the best home field advantage in the league.

It will come with experience and hopefully this is all part of the learning curve for Kaepernick. He will make big plays and he will get his chances to take shots downfield, he will just learn that against good defenses that it won't come at his time of choosing. So far he is winless against the Rams and Seahawks, perhaps a bit of patience will prove more prudent against these types of teams. There's a very good reason many pundits believed the Ravens matched up better against the 49ers than the Patriots last year in the superbowl for this very reason.

Like I posted above, the last 49er win against SEA had poor QB play from Smith. We covered all this in Dr. Milk Carton's Kaep thread least season. I understand what you are saying, but SEA's defense played well against Smith too. Smith's success was predicated to everything working. When it didn't, he struggled more but at least had the defense and ST to bail him out. Last night, nothing worked for SF except containing Wilson.

It's also had to get anything going when you are shooting yourself in the ### with stupid penalties.

Kaep and the 49ers needed to have a game like this to shake them up. They were getting sloppy and arrogant. Buying into too much hype, and Harbaugh needed to get slapped around by a rival HC. Kaep has had only one start against STL, so I can't blame him for both. I credit Jeff Fisher more than blame Kaep.

I said this to a buddy today. I feel like theyre listening to the media too much and believing people that say they're the best team in the NFL. Hopefully the Seattle game was a wake up call and they get a little more serious. Otherwise it's gonna be a lonnnng season.

Agreed on all of the above. Hopefully this is just more rust from Gore sitting out most of preseason. He started 2011 with a whimper as well but eventually found his form. I will say that the run blocking has been pretty bad as well.

Smith had a bad game against Seattle last year at home. It was only through a dominating defensive performance that SF pulled that one out.

Re: Gore, I'm not ruling out that he's done, but the offensive line was terrible last night. PFF's rankings were horrible for them last night, and while SEA has a good DL, I wouldn't consider them among the league's best. They probably need to ease Hunter back in anyway after the injury.

Could be. I'm trying to remind myself that they have been a Super Bowl caliber team the last two years despite two what i consider to be equally bad early regular season losses (@bal and at home vs. NYG)

They are still a SB caliber team. Caught a comment on one of the local Bay Area media outlets, where one guy compared this loss to the loss against PHI in 1994. What that dude failed to flesh out was the '94 team was more loaded with HOF and All-Pro players.

Now THAT's blowing something way out of context.

It was bad enough a couple of seasons ago when the 49er FO had to teach the home crowd when to make noise and when not to, but this is new a low:

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/eye-on-football/23721252/49er-fans-write-to-newspaper-complaining-about-seahawks-loud-stadium

Was anyone else appalled by the unsportsmanlike conduct of the Seattle Seahawks and their fans, juiced on noise, which surely creates as big an advantage over an opponent as any performance enhancing drug and which, to their shame, NFL officials turn the same blind eye they have to concussions and drugs ("Seattle states case loudly, clearly in rout," Sports, Sept. 16)?

It would be simple to fix. Seahawks players and managers would ask their fans to cease and desist, and the NFL would implement a new rule: The visiting team may stop the game when fan noise is greater than a specified decibel level, and should this rule be violated in more than three games, no home games will be played at the offending field for the rest of the season, including playoff games. Things would quiet down.

At a time when the world seems sour, sports give us a place of joy, community and hope, and to have it spoiled is a bigger loss than it seems on the surface.
The funny thing is, I think Candlestick reached it's loudest decibel level when they booed Alex Smith, and then chanted WE WANT CARR! A media guy who has covered the 49ers for years said that the glass in the media booths and the stadium itself actually shook, and was the loudest noise he has ever heard the fans make.

This was just a local story that has now made National news. I actually like it more than I am embarrassed by it.

I distance myself from NinerFan more and more, especially the new bandwagon ones. I just call myself a guy who is interested in the 49ers now. NinerFan is pathetic. Way to go, fanbase. :lmao: :lmao:

CARRQUAKE!!!!

The Niner fans I love are the ones who try to insist that everyone use the phrase "Niner Empire" instead of "Niner Nation" the way most other fanbases seem to do. The whole "Nation" thing started with the Raiders, and the harder fans try to distance from that, the more insecure they look about still feeling like the Little Brothers In The Bay. Niners have been far more successful the past 30 years, but there's still a mystique about the Raiders that transcends success and watching the Niner fans who rail against it entertains me to no end.

Ninazfan is the the new Raiderfan. There is a NinerJan to a RaiderMort. Well, NinerJan passed away (and left behind her 30 cats) but still. RaiderJose isn't much different from NinerJose. Raiduhz, Ninuhz, it's a total Bay Area thing now, like the word HELLA.

Well, I guess that explains it. I used to hate the smug, hyper-entitled Niners fan. Now they are just kinda... in the background. I guess the change in the nature of the fanbase explains a lot. People chasing winners eventually had no choice but to cross the bay and leave just the convicts and 40-something rap stars.

It kinda helps when they can leave Mt. Davis to the new crib in San Jo, where the QB ain't quite Black nor he ain't quite White, and maybe even look a little more Latino with all those tats. Kinda like Cliff Curtis playing Smiley in Training Day.

I've been a Niners fan for a long time and I've never heard the phrase "niners empire" until a rams fan posted it in the niners thread.

JT the Brick tried to establish that when he went to KNBR's sister station, to offset the Raider Nation. So when JT The Brick does something like that, it usually means it's crap.

Watching the KC - PHI game, seeing KC and Alex Smith unable to punch it in from the redzone time after time...reminds me of something...lol

and all the dump offs to the RB... somethings never change.
His yardage again is piled up due to YAC. His average completions are really less than ten yards in the air.

His arm is garbage too. Looks worse now than before.

Drummer is not really ninerjan?
They won't let me send my brand of cookies and brownies over to HQ. Because Anthony Davis would get fat and giggle during practice.

Meanwhile.....

Every Chief win could mean another second round pick for the 49ers. They got a fairly soft schedule ahead, so Captain Sacked should be able to manage his way to .500.

Looks worse now than before.
and yet his team is 3-0.

Which is amazing since they use an overhand version of the rugby forward pass.

Now we get to see how much Harbaugh meant it when he took his digs at the Seahawks when he talked about the "Niner Way" and the approach a team should take in conducting itself. Integrity is fun to talk about in the abstract, but not always fun when you're the guy under the gun in the moment.

He will ignore it. Harbaugh is such a pansy. I love watching him get beat down by Pete Carroll. The faces he makes are priceless.

Yeah, he won a lot of games with SF too...but how many SB appearances does he have? One less than Kaepernick, thats how many.

He also lost a lot of games in SF.

Well, I posted how Aldon has issues that were never really resolved, and how he has a major booze problem. Now he get's busted with weed. The 49ers police blotter gets thicker every season. Now it's up to Jed to have another case swept under the rug.
I hope this kid can get his head right and quit with the off field crap. It would be a shame for his talent to go to waste because of stupidity/immaturity.

Did not mean to suggest the Niners should've kept him. that's silly. That said, smith's non-flashy style can be very successful and he takes a lot of crap unnecessarily. His days of being terrible under really bad coaching conditions are long gone. Yet people still go on about him like he's Ryan Leaf or something.

The 49ers have like 5 DUI arrests in the Harbaugh era. It's not just an Aldon isolated issue at HQ. Harbaugh has joked that he got drunk an into a fight when talking the local media when he had some marks on his face, so that kind of culture is sort of baked in there. Who knows what else goes on that isn't reported? They are pretty much in bed with the city of Santa Clara now, and if they get into trouble in that city it can get swept under the rug easy, like I think Ahmad Brooks' recent arrest.

If the 49ers don't do something to discipline Aldon over this, then who knows how many more future off field issues that team will have.

We've crunched enough numbers to show his effectiveness with the 49ers under Harbaugh, which is a very small sample size that still said "placeholder" QB play to "franchise" QB play.

You're not gonna see me defending that, except to say that was multiple regimes* ago. But you also haven't seen Fisher getting sanctimonious about how other people conduct their business and doing a compare/contrast like the other guy was "Brand X."

You want to talk about the Rams of today? Fisher cut Dunbar. In a huge division game, he sat his two star rookies... for violating curfew. He's bringing in players with character issues, but he's then laying down the law and they either straighten-up-and-fly-right, or there are consequences.

* There are a nigh-infinite list of shameful things done under the ownership of The Murdering Showgirl.

Just making sure you're cooking that Lamb in the right pot Spiff. As a fan of the 49ers, I don't mind criticizing the team I root for, as much as it pains other 49er fans. :kicksrock:

Avril definitely isn't anything special but he was a decent pickup at a position of need.
OK. But the media was acting like Avril was the second coming of Alden Smith............... ;)
Who cares what the media thinks? BTW, it's spelled Aldon. Hopefully not on another police blotter this off season.
Nah, he seems like a balanced young man. DUI can happen to almost anyone once. Just made a bad decision and lucky nobody got hurt. If it happens again, different story.
Well?

Neighbor: Aldon Smith's foot was still on the accelerator of SUV, which was against tree, when police arrived. It caused tires to smoke
I think he gets 4 games, and hopefully it's the wakeup call he needs.
Not just him, but teams. They have shuttle services and the like, but they need to get aggressive about it. In the end, it still comes down to the players and their own choices, but teams -know- they are dealing with entitled guys with maturity issues and a limited breadth of life experiences. They are starting to get creative about how they help them through life, but there needs to be more, especially with stuff like this.

Update:

http://blogs.mercurynews.com/49ers/2013/09/20/smith-present-for-start-of-practice-3-12-hours-after-dui-arrest/

Aldon Smith stretched with teammates and remained at the front of the line with the 49ers’ starters as practice began Friday.

Media access was closed after less than 10 minutes as team drills began.

Smith was arrested some 3 1/2 hours earlier, at 7 a.m., by San Jose police for suspicion of DUI and marijuana possession after a single-car accident in the Silver Creek neighborhood.

Coach Jim Harbaugh is scheduled to address the media at 2:15 p.m., after which the media will have an hour access to players inside the locker room.

The 49ers earlier issued a statement acknowledging Smith’s arrest but declined further comment. Smith was released from jail after posting $5,250 bail.

His status for Sunday’s game against the Colts is unknown, although his presence at practice Friday could suggest the team may play him if the NFL doesn’t first impose a suspension.

Smith was limited by a back injury the previous two days of practice.
