Eh, scouting reports are opinions, and they differ depending on who you listen to. I'm not a college guy so ill wait to form an opinion until I see him play.

Reid angling for a starting job with 49ers

SANTA CLARA -- The 49ers traded up 13 spots to fill the only hole where there's no obvious starter on the roster.
The 49ers worked a trade during the day Thursday with the Dallas Cowboys to move up from No. 31 to No. 18 if their guy was available. And when LSU safety Eric Reid was still there, the deal fell into place.
"This was our top-rated safety," 49ers coachJim Harbaugh said.
Reid was the second safety selected. Three spots earlier, the New Orleans Saints drafted Kenny Vaccaro of Texas. Reid is the front-runner to replace Dashon Goldson, who left in free agency to sign a lucrative contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
"I think I'm a very cerebral player," Reid said on a conference call with Bay Area reporters. "I pride myself on knowing the defense. I pride myself on being able to get the guys lined up on the team, and being a great teammate and also doing my job. I'm very fortunate to be on such an incredible defense with the guys that are up there now, and I just can't wait to get to work."
Reid is expected to team up with Donte Whitner, a veteran who is more comfortable playing close to the line of scrimmage. The 49ers believe they are getting a safety who can play the run and the pass with equal effectiveness.
"He's got the height, weight, speed that we were looking for at the position," 49ers general manager Trent Baalke said. "He's smart. He's tough. He's a physical football player. And we really felt he was an all-around safety. He can play high, he can play low, he's done a lot in the back half, and he's done a lot moving up into the box. We felt he inserted strong and played the type of ball that we wanted to see out of safety.
"We feel good about his ability to insert and play a physical brand of football. He's a physical football player. He runs in the 4.4s. He's a heady ball player. He triggers fast on the run. He reacts well to the pass. It's about learning the angles of the pro game and learning the speed of the pro game. I feel very confident he'll be able to do that and do it quickly."
Harbaugh was unsuccessful in his bid to recruit Reid to Stanford. This time, as Harbaugh quipped, Reid has no choice in the matter. Harbaugh also touted Reid's versatility at safety.
"He can play down in the box and he's got great contact courage," Harbaugh said. "He likes to get from Point A to Point B and go hit somebody. He's an effective tackler and he's a hard-hitting tackler. He also plays the deep part of the field extremely well and can track the football and has the speed to be a range safety and cover ground."
Reid met with Harbaugh at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, but the 49ers did not invite him to Santa Clara for a visit.
Baalke said the 49ers had discussions with teams at every level of the draft about the possibility of moving up to select a player. Earlier Thursday, Baalke said he and Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones agreed to a trade if the 49ers' player was available. The 49ers did not tell Jones which player they were targeting.
The 49ers traded their pick at No. 31, as well as a third-round pick, No. 74 overall, to move up 13 spots. Now, the 49ers have their most dire need out of the way and they still have 11 picks remaining over the six rounds of the draft.
"I don't know that it was a priority," Baalke said. "We didn't wake up and say we got to get him regardless of anything. We feel very good about the guys we have. And I've said this before. The guys in that locker room aren't going to sit there and worry about Eric Reid. They got a job to do. They're competitive guys and they're going to make Eric earn everything he gets on this football team."
The 49ers are scheduled to make the second pick of the second round on Friday. The draft resumes at 3:30 p.m.
When asked if they already have their player picked out, Baalke answered, "Absolutely, we know. That means something can't happen overnight and we wake up tomorrow and somebody has a deal that you can't refuse and you trade back. Otherwise, we're prepared to make a pick."

I thought thats what was happening too. After last years uber questionable pick of AJ Jenkins, I was hoping for more of an impact player like Floyd when he started slipping. I know S was a need but so was DT with Justin Smith getting older.

The lack of a move for a S in FA all pointed to S in the first round of the draft. Reid might not be a flashy pick, but I like defensive players out of LSU so i'm not disappointed. They still can go OLB and DT/NT later as well as CB, with a WR mixed in, who maybe can push Jenkins (which I agree was a questionable pick where he was drafted). Ertz would be awesome as well. I thought he would go higher with a price, but this years 1st round is all trenches and defense. Weird draft with no Blue Chip at QB.JHuber77 said:

I actually like the trade down to net the extra 3rd we lost trading up in the 1st and the extra 7th. I think at 34 the pick should have been Carradine or Ertz, likely Carradine. The 49ers got the guy they likely wanted anyway and restocked the pick lost in the 1st round trade up.

Yeah, Ertz was kind of a 'wish pick' for me if they could get him, and DT is a greater need. Ertz might not had been on their board anyway.

Don't know a ton about McDonald. I heard he was kind of a late riser that may can cause some mismatches. Will have to trust the front office on this one. They traded up, didn't pay a ton but obviously had McDonald separated over Kelce in their minds.

I could live with Williams. There were points he was considered a late 1st rounder. I was wondering if the 49ers would address CB as well.

Anyone else feel like the biggest need left is CB? I'm just not sure there is one out there I really like.. I'd probably rather have Jesse Williams. Williams should fit the scheme pretty well. Although I may be biased a bit having seen him play so much around here.

They still need to find a cow for RB. Gore came out of the 3rd, so let's hope they find another.

I thought along those lines as well as a possibility. I'm guessing as a replacement for Anthony Dixon. Hunter and James are kind of the same type player and neither would seem to be able to handle the every down duties. Not sure really who is out there though that would fit. I still like Williams and also think someone eventually gets a good player in Corey Lemonier who not many are discussing. Not sure Lemonier fits with the 49ers though.

Williams still could happen I guess. Something must be out there about him though to not be off the board after many projected him as a late 1st round guy. I don't know if the Niners would do a 3rd DL as well. I'm hoping they have a CB out there they like but it very well could be that there just wasn't one in this class they really covet. As far as players dropping goes I thought the Chargers got a steal with Keenan Allen.

I really don't like this 4 day draft spectacle. I don't have the time to watch it, nor care to over 4 freakin' days. Even though I have both ESPN and the NFL Network, I rarely watch them. I even forgot the draft started this week, lulz.

I don't think CB is a huge immediate need. They will need some bodies to replace Brock and Rogers next year, and probably Whitner at safety as well. I'm not sure they will be able to afford boldin and/or Crabtree, so they will have to look at WR as well. Unlikely any DL they could draft at this point would be capable of breaking into the rotation.

A stud pass rush up front can help the backfield more. Losing Smith for a few games and he not being 100% in the post season really exposed a hole in the defense. Looks like they are stocking up bodies for the DL which is a good thing overall.

Looks like niners are loading strictly for upside in this draft. I like it, with a deep roster you don't need more meh bodies, but guys that can separate themselves. Looking forward to seeing what these rooks can bring to the table in the preseason.

Dial is the first pick I really don't totally understand. I know the guys from here on in are long shots to make the roster. I'd rather have spent what we had left to move up for Williams. I just don't see the need for Dial after drafting Carradine. Lemonier should be more of an OLB. I guess he's just DL depth.

Sounds like he is someone who can move inside if needed, so diffferent than Carridine in that regard.
DL depth so Smith and McDonald don't have to play as many snaps next year I guess.

As much as I wanted more "Now Impact" players, It's pretty cool that we can get guys like Carradine and Lattimore at value, and have the luxury of letting them heal before they're needed.
Repeating they hype on the internet if these picks pan out, Baalke is showing how good he is at taking the long view of keeping this team competitive.
