***San Francisco Giants Thread (1 Viewer)

Missed the game, but damn this line is sexy. I have no idea why Sabes kept bouncing this guy around for the last two years. He's got great dirty dirty stuff.

I'm almost ready to put him in the company of Cain and TIMMAH, but I've been a Sanchez supporter for the last couple years. I don't care if he is a little wild you don't see lefties that with his type of stuff that throw in the mid-90s very often. These three guys are going to be the only chance the Giants have at winning all year.

Oh and the obligatory.... I loved you the first time around, but GET THE HELL OUT OF MY LINE UP RICHIE!!!!

Finally, in closing, #### Barry Zito and his rediculous contract, and #### Sabes and Magowan for panicking in the 2006-7 offseason and throwing all that money at him.
they should cut him a $60 million check and tell him to get lost
Apparently I'm not the only one with this idea. From ESPN.com today:"We also asked high-ranking officials of two clubs what they would do if they had a big-buck disaster like Zito on their team. The first replied: "I'd cry." The second had a more innovative proposal. "Here's what they should do," he said. "They should go to Zito and say, 'Look, it's clear this is not going to work. Let's put together an NBA-type deferral package. We'll take the whole contract, defer it over 30 years with no interest and then we'll release you, to let you start fresh somewhere else.' "The club could get significant cost savings that way. You take $112 million over 30 years, that's $3.7 million a year. You're better off paying him $3.7 million a year to not pitch than having him go out and do what he's doing. … In the NBA, this happens a lot. The union would never let him do that in our sport. But you know what? From the player's standpoint, he'd be better off." or..."An official of one pitching-starved team said this week: "I think I could trade for Barry Zito right now. But who the hell would want to?" So we posed this question: How much money would the Giants have to pay of Zito's remaining $112.5 million or so to get somebody -- anybody -- interested? "The Giants would have to eat 80 percent -- I'm talking $80-90 million," the official replied."I'm on board with either

Rumors that Peter Magowan may be ready to retire from his job as the Giants' managing general partner have been circulating for more than two weeks, but they picked up steam Wednesday night when a Chicago Tribune blog on the White Sox-Twins rain delay included a reference buried at the bottom to "a change in control coming soon" for the Giants.Neither Magowan nor Larry Baer answered requests to confirm or deny either the Tribune entry, written by Mark Gonzales, the paper's White Sox beat writer, or the growing number of rumors about Magowan's future, but Senior Vice President for Communications Staci Slaughter told our John Shea, "He's 66, and has thought about it from time to time, but no decision has made at all. At this point he has no decision on that."This can be parsed in any number of ways, but it is clear that the fun has pretty well been drained out of Magowan's role as the MGP. He has dealt with the team's current on-field difficulties, the unpleasant publicity over the BALCO scandal and the Giants' role in granting clubhouse access to Barry Bonds' trainer, Greg Anderson, and he's even dealt with being mentioned as a focus for sanctions by Rep. Henry Waxman in the second round of the Roger Clemens hearings.
Maybe Zito can buy out Magowan's share

Today would have been a perfect day for them to shave some innings off of Lincecum's arm. The kid is leading 8 to 1 after 7 innings, he's thrown 85 pitches...bring in a reliever to close out the final two innings and have a nice day. Nooooooooooooo they leave him in an extra inning to get his pitch count over 100 and give up an extra run.

Just stupid to leave him in there in a blowout game.

They did this again last night. 108 pitches through 7 and leading 6-1 in Arizona. They let him start the 8th and he let the first two guys get on base and fatass Walker let them both score. I don't understand why they let him start the 8th inning.

1. Very annoying how bad the G-men have been at home this year. Hopefully it's just small sample size and they'll play better at home the rest of the year. Very frustrating to sweep the dbacks on the road then lose 2 of 3 to the pads at home.

2. Freddie Lewis looks like a keeper. I'd feel a lot better about the Giants' future if they could point to 2 position players from the system that could play everyday for the next 3-4 years and not embarrass themselves. Lewis looks like he has a decent chance to be one of them.

Lewis is the only "young" position player who has distinguished himself this year. He's 27 and not really a prospect but he's passable in sort of a low salary version of Randy Winn way.Jose Castillo hasn't been horrible for a Pittsburgh & Florida castoff. He's 27 as well and doesn't hit enough for a 3B, but he could be adequate if he can manage to field a middle infield position.Other than that, nobody has stepped up.

Is anyone having a quieter very good year than Bengie Molina?

I hardly ever hear his name.

Mauer, McCann, Soto from Chicago, get all the attention. Even this Napoli guy (who seems like the Dave Kingman of catchers, either hitting an HR or striking out) gets his name mentioned more than Molina.

He's been great.

Was out of the country for a couple weeks. Checking up on the Giants draft, I'm really happy with the way things have turned out. I would have prefered Smoak (the switch hitting college power first baseman drawing comparisons to Chipper and Tex) to Posey ( A late 90's Jason Kendall with Gold-glove caliber defense) but I'm not upset about it.

Here's a summary of the a couple chats I read through concerning the giants.

Kevin Goldstein (11:43:27 AM PT): 5. Giants take Buster Posey. If you heard Bud make the announcement, now you know why he goes by Buster. This is a fantastic pick at five for the Giants. Really great find at five, and I'll bet anything right now that he doesn't get $12 million from SF.

Bryan Smith (11:44:34 AM PT): Kevin's right in one area: Posey is far better than Kendall defensively, so the comparison is far from perfect. But let's not forget how good Kendall was offensively: .310/.410/.480 for the years I'm talking about as his ceiling. It's a good pick, and Posey has improved every year of college. And hell, I love him because he's the first Cape guy to go.

Kevin Goldstein (2:23:40 PM PT): 37. SF, Conor Gillaspie, 3b, Wichita St.

A lot of people saw this as a first-round bat, but at the same time, there might be money problems. Giants looks to be ready to do the right thing in the draft.

Bryan Smith (2:24:29 PM PT): San Francisco takes another player in Gillaspie in the sandwich round that's going to hit for a good average and just a little power. I like Gillaspie quite a bit, though, and I think he's really going to hit. The Giants really have improved their future today with Gillaspie and Posey.

Kevin Goldstein (4:20:18 PM PT): ted (the cubicle): How about Roger Kieschnick -- did the Giants go 3 for 3? I saw Baseball America had him at #44.

Believe it or not, the Giants are kicking ### and taking names.

Kevin Goldstein (4:24:28 PM PT): bravoatoc (Tulsa): So, I know we aren't near being done, but what are your initial views on who had the best draft and who had the worst? Actually who is having the best draft, the Astros ARE having the worst.

I haven't had time to digest it all, but as weird as this sounds. I really like the Giants draft.

Bryan Smith (4:39:42 PM PT): The Giants pop Brandon Crawford here in the fourth, and I think it's a fabulous selection. Crawford is incredibly raw for someone his age, but he has some really nice tools. After going for sure bets in Buster Posey and Conor Gillaspie, Crawford is the perfect type of complement. Throw in Roger Kieschnick, who was once considered a first round right fielder, and it's possible -- not likely, but possible -- the Giants just filled half their future.

Kenny (Sacramento): After the last 2 drafts, which appeared to be solid, where would you rank the Giants farm system?

SportsNation Keith Law: Assuming they get these guys signed, which I assume they will, they're probably top five.

Buster Posey (taken No. 5), C, Giants: Unlike some other top college catchers that were recently drafted, like Walker or Jeff Clement, Posey is going to be a plus backstop defensively, and he's in a system that is pretty barren of catching prospects. He fell a few spots because his upside isn't as great as that of some of the other players in this draft, but he's a potential .300 hitter with 20-homer pop at a position where that kind of production draws the sharp notice of fantasy owners.

Potential: Top offensive catcher ETA: 2010

Conor Gillaspie (taken No. 37), 3B, Giants: He's a doubles hitter that could eventually contend for a batting title, and the team needs a third baseman.

Roger Kieschnick (taken No. 82), OF, Giants: Is he another in a long line of failed Giants power prospects? Perhaps, but he could be a five-category fantasy player if he can tighten up what he swings at and make enough contact.

Plus add the signing of 16 year old Dominican prospect Rafael Rodriguez, who is drawing comparisons to Vlad, because of his size and power with the bat. Rodriguez can work the entire outfield and drive the ball anywhere.

I was blaming Sabean for the last couple years of ineptitude, but maybe more of the blame lies with Magowan than I thought.

So what was up with horowitz taking LF starts from Lewis this past weekend? Just bad pitching matchups or are they in a full fledge platoon? Lewis has been solid the last couple weeks, hitting over .300 with a bunch of runs. I started him this past period and need to again this coming week. At least he went 2-3 as a late inning replacement.

Very good article on Lincecum in this week's SI.

Interesting how most teams were hesitant to draft him because they feared that such a small guy throwing so hard would inevitably blow out his arm.

They really go into detail about how solid his mechanics were and how almost stress-free they are on his arm. They contrasted the 5'10" 170 lb. Lincecum with the 6'4" 225 Mark Prior, and how Prior had awful mechanics, despite what the experts thought, and that's why his career is nearly over.

just want to let the giant fans know about the white sox and giants agreement to vote for JD and rowand. they have it displayed on both official giants and white sox sites.

I went to Saturday night's game against the Dogs with my Doger fan uncle. Tickets (and beers) were my gift to him for his birthday so I went large and got seats in the dugout club on stubhub. Wow. If you've never sat in the 2nd row behind the plate, I heartily suggest you try it at least once in your life. We had a really sweet view of Russell Martin chasing the ball when Broxton threw it away in the bottom of the 10th as he charged and slid right at us. Very, very cool stuff.

It must have been cool to see all the old-timer outfielders:oneflapdown:

Did Tim L. get hurt? He must have with that early exit. Any update would be great. TIA
The Franchise limped off the field in the fifth inning Tuesday night, having gotten drilled by a scorching line drive off the bat of Houston's Brad Ausmus, the inning's first batter.Lincecum was hit on the right knee and taken from Minute Maid Park to have X-rays. After the game, manager Bruce Bochy said the X-rays were negative and that Lincecum had a bone bruise but was able to walk around the clubhouse.

Indeed it was. Very cool to see Kevin Mitchell and HacMan in particular. Brett Butler was also there, even though I identify him more with the Dodgers at this point.

Did Mitchell decapitate any cats?In other news,
Before their game tonight, the club called up first baseman Travis Ishikawa, third baseman Ryan Rohlinger and catcher/first baseman Pablo Sandoval.Struggling first baseman John Bowker was optioned to Triple-A Fresno along with backup catcher Steve Holm. Third baseman Jose Castillo was designated for assignment, almost assuredly ending his Giants tenure before he could make it through a full season.Ishikawa, 24, was batting .291 with 16 home runs and 48 RBIs in 171 at-bats for Fresno; he had rebuilt himself as a top-shelf prospect and earned the promotion to Fresno after a solid three months at Double-A Connecticut.Ishikawa, a smooth defensive player, hit eight home runs in a span of 33 at-bats earlier this month.Sandoval has been the biggest sensation in the Giants system this year. The switch-hitting catcher, who turned 22 on Monday, hit .359 for Class-A San Jose and didn't stop hitting when promoted to the pitcher-friendly Eastern League. He was batting .337 with eight home runs in 175 at-bats for the Defenders.Rohlinger, 24 was the darling of spring training, hitting home runs almost any time the Giants brought him up from minor league camp to fill out Cactus League travel squads. They eventually gave him a major league invitation two weeks before the end of camp and considered him for the opening day roster. The scrappy former University of Oklahoma infielder was batting .296 with six home runs in 159 at-bats for Connecticut.Rohlinger was promoted to Connecticut at midseason along with Sandoval and sparked the Defenders to a winning record
We'll see if any keepers come out of this bunch.

Bowker, as much as I like him, has played himself out of a job. And Ishikawa has earned a chance to show what he can do at the major league level. I think this is a good move. I could go either way with the Sandoval move, I'd feel better about it if Molina was gone, which was guarantee Sandoval getting at-bats. If they brought him up just to sit on the bench, I'm going to be pissed. If he plays I'm not worried too much. He's earned a call up this fall, even if it's a couple weeks early.Rohlinger, I'm not so sure about. He's been playing alright in CT, but I really think he could stay there the rest of the year, or at most go to Fresno. That being said, since this move contributes to Castillo being DFA'ed I'm conflicted as to whether this was good or not. Also good news... Giants signed all their big picks. I've seen conflicting reports of Posey, but I think they'll get it done. After this draft, a couple signings abroad, and the continued success of some prospects in the low minors (Bamgardner and Alderson) I think this has got to be one of the better systems in the league.

Were the Giants that naive to think Scott McClain would fall for the silent treatment? For God's sake, he has seen everything in baseball. Well, almost everything. He was only 4 the year Babe Ruth hit 60 home runs. When McClain finally hit his first major-league home run Wednesday - in his 7,301st professional at-bat, after blasting 362 in the minors and Japan - his teammates did not even look at him."It makes total sense, and he knew it," pitcher Barry Zito said. There were no smiles, no handshakes, until clubhouse manager Mike Murphy gave McClain a high-five. Murphy is too nice to snub anybody. Then came the avalanche of hugs and backslaps for the 36-year-old infielder, whose solo homer against fellow rookie Steven Register was the most delicious moment in a 9-2 Giants victory at Coors Field, their only win on a 1-5 trip. With one out in the sixth inning, after Pablo Sandoval hit his second home run in the bigs, McClain powered a hanging 2-2 slider deep into the left-field seats and took the 360-foot tour of his life."I wanted to slow things down to a walk and take it all in," McClain said. "There was a sense of relief. There was a lot of pressure these guys put on me to get that one out of the way."
36 year old rookies don't figure big on a rebuilding team but it's still a nice story.

Rumor that Cain might be dealt for Prince Fielder & JJ Hardy. I can't imagine the Brewers would be so stupid, but there's always hope.

http://www.sacbee.com/100/story/1248904.html
That's a whole lot better package than Alexis Rios. The Brewers will need pitching badly after CC and Sheets sign elsewhere. Alcides Escobar will soon be ready at SS and Milwaukee has some other options who could step in at 1B, although Fielder's production will be impossible to replace. I think it's very unlikely to happen but who know if the Brewers will overreact if they fall short of the playoffs this year.

I heard a Sabean interview last week or two ago, in which he said that going into next season SS was Burriss' job to lose. I had heard Fielder was possible, but not Hardy. I'm not sure how I feel. Ishi is doing decently, and Pablo is doing great. I don't think the Giants are going to contend next year, I would be tempted to hold Cain at least till next offseason, to determine whether a couple of the position players develop to at least useful players, and whether the minor league pitching prospects continue developing and are worth letting Cain go.Although a guy could hit more than 20 homers would be really nice. I ambivalent.

Congratulations to Tim Lincecum on his Cy Young Award, no thanks to Chris DeLuca of the Chicago Sun Times who left Lincecum out of his top three.

And in other news, the Jints signed Josh Phelps to a minor league deal. It's not a terrible signing unless they intend to give him a bunch of ABs. SF hasn't had an above average offensive 1B since Will Clark. Of course with Brian Sabean, he may have thought he was actually signing Ken Phelps.

Kicking off the official thread of the Giants' 50th year in SF with some words from Brian Sabean.

, I think our best moves have been the ones we did not make. In holding onto Cain and Lincecum,
See, he has a plan after all. This year is going to be painful
I think if he got any part of this BS article right, it was this part. They need to get some bats in there, but the future of this franchise *should* be built around these two guys.
Looks like he was right - Can you imagine if they traded Tim L this past offseason?

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/blogs/giants...;entry_id=37753

Emmanuel Burriss wins the 2B job. Frandsen optioned to Fresno. Burriss has some SB potential but is probably only rosterable in the deepest league.

Although none of this is set in stone, it looks as though the Giants will carry six infielders (starters Travis Ishikawa, Burriss, Edgar Renteria and Pablo Sandova, plus Aurilia and Uribe as the reserves).

There will be 12 pitchers, the five starters plus Brian Wilson, Jeremy Affeldt, Bobby Howry, Alex Hinshaw, Rule 5 guy Luis Perdomo, Merkin Valdez and a long guy to be determined. It could be Keiichi Yabu or Ramon Ortiz, who previously were reassigned to the minors.

It looks as though they seriously are considering the idea of Sandoval being the lone backup catcher. Bochy acknowledged that means he might pinch-run less for Bengie Molina. If so, Steve Holm would be out, but the Giants could carry six outfielders (the three starters plus Nate Schierholtz, Andres Torres and Eugenio Velez). I have to stress, though that Bochy did not say Torres or Velez had made the team.

What are the Giants gonna do with the Guzman kid? He can really rake - they have to find a position for him and call him up by June, no?

He's been a hitting machine for the past year plus. On the other hand, he's supposedly a butcher with the glove and has been given up on by two different organizations. If he turns out to be a big league hitter, it's like found money.Sabean will probably trade him for Paul Assenmacher or something.

Tell me about Fred Lewis?
Batted in the three hole today against a RHP so there's some value there. Decent speed and a little bit of pop but wouldn't be a #3 hitter for most teams in AAA. He'll probably lose some ABs to Schierholz, at least until Rowand runs into something.

BREAKING NEWS

Barry Zito still sucks

ETA: Giants just signed Dallas McPherson to a minor league deal

Friars fans bringing broomsticks to the game today. Thanks for coming out, Gints - hope you enjoyed your weekend in Sunny SoCal. :bye:

Zito has two starts with an ERA of 10 and a WHIP of almost 2.

How much longer does he stay in the rotation?

First two games of this dodgers series have been kinda weird, with lots of shady baserunning and fielding. Hopefully tonight the G-men play better tonight as I am catching my first game of the year at the big phone. Go Timmy!

Saw something I thought I'd never see at a baseball game last night, a Bengie Molina triple. It was quite a sight to see him trucking around second and arrive at third without a throw. If I could see a Giants pitcher throw a no hitter and the G-men win the World Series, my baseball watching life would be complete.
