Save $ on cell service -- Ting Mobile / Solavei (+ other MVNOs) (2 Viewers)

I am set up with Consumer Cellular now. I had lots of issues trying to transfer my government number, and they really did a nice job talking me through. Then there was some stuff that needed to be done to set up data on my phone, and they called me three times to assist. Will report back on the service and pricing after I have it for a few months, but the customer service is really top-notch.
yeah consumer reports rates then #1 in customer service out of all phone companies

they should cover 25% of your ETF. Definitely call them if you didn't sign up for that prior to porting.
 I thought you just completed the form once you have the invoice from the prior cell service provider. What's this about letting them know prior to porting?

WIfe and I are on ATT and I know I am no longer under contract not sure about her if any of that matters. We pay about $165 a month for pretty much unlimited everything. We like our iPhones but if it meant saving a fair amount of cash I would switch from them. We use very little voice, are power text users she's around 4k a month and I am at 1k, we have wifi at work and home but still can use a fair amount of data. We spend a lot of time on the road traveling but it's to family within a couple of hours away. Zip 72855 we get a discount with ATT for being educators. Not sure what all you need, but maybe you can tell me how to save a little. Thanks, great thread! Big fan of saving money.

yup, I can help. It would help me if you put hard numbers on the minutes and data like you did for texts though

I looked and we average together about 550 minutes of talk time per month. On data we were right at 1.5 gb per month but my wife's wifi quit working (ATT and Apple wouldn't fix), since then we are at 5 gb per month. We both need new phones, if that matters any.

550 minutes per month is not using very little voice. You guys must be on your damn phones all the time :) 5000 texts and 500 minutes of talk and 1.5 GB of data plus a lot of wifi use.

Read a book once in a while

I was very surprised by the talk time. It was mostly me but then I got to thinking about it I have 2 children from another marriage that live away from me and I talk to them nightly. The rest is mostly on my wife and kids. I text a lot for work but it does appear that we are power users.

I have read 5 books over the past 6 months (I seldom sleep more than 4-5 hours). Have any good ones you'd recommend?

cool, I'll run this through later today

Hulk thanks for the info supplied in this thread

I’m pretty sure I going to move my Galaxy S2 and my daughter’s phone over to Ting once my Sprint contract ends in three months or so.

My wife however isn’t happy with the Sprint network and I think she wants a new phone.

Our home zip is 27571 and her work zip is 27615. Which carrier has the best coverage in those zip codes?

Which MNVO and phone would you recommend for the wife? She also has a Galaxy S2
Well, for the Raleigh area, looks like Sprint is rated the worst on both cellreception and rootmetrics. It looks like that rating is mostly driven by data speeds... call quality/drops may be slightly worse with Sprint, but that is probably a minor difference.

If she were to leave Sprint coverage, she would require a new phone.

What are her usage requirements? (minutes/texts/data)
She doesn't need too much data because we have wifi at home and in the building

We currently have a Sprint plan that gives us 1500 anytime minutes and we almost never go over that

Text messages I would guess in the 300 range

I will double check all this later tonight when I can get a hold of her phone to check the usage

She seems to like the deal that verizon is offering now. The buy one Galaxy S5 get another free

Our company doesn't give us cell phones but gives us a $70 stipend per phone so that helps
You each get $70 a month from work to cover your phone plan?

Yeah, just go to Verizon then.

Unless you can bank the extra cash if you do it cheaper?
I can bank the extra cash
Galaxy S5 is pricey unlocked. How do you feel about a Nexus 5?

If you're looking for 1500 minutes (shared), 300ish texts, and not too much data since you have wifi everywhere (call it 500 MB?), then you could save a LOT of money.

For example, on Ting you could have 2100 minutes, 1000 texts, and 500 MB to share between you guys for $64 a month total (plus taxes/fees). On Zact something similar is even cheaper @ $53.89, but no Nexus and your phone options are more limited.
The phone really doesn't matter

The network does....wife wants nothing to do with Sprint's network

If you guys keep your existing phones, you could go straight over to Consumer Cellular. Use AT&T's towers, but no LTE. 1000 minutes, 15,000 texts, and 2 GB of data would run you just $70. Or, if you want LTE and the same phones, AIO wireless would give you unlimited calls/texts and 2.5GB per line for $90 a month.

If you're willing to get new phones and are cool w/ Sprint's coverage, Zact will meet your needs for just $64.03 and Ting for $70.50.

Take a look at all 4 imo. Good luck.

Both AIO and Consumer Cellular can meet your needs.

AIO has LTE (but throttled to max of 8 MBps), but no roaming. $70 (+taxes/fees) for 2 phones, unlimited calls and texts and 500 MB per line.

Consumer Cellular has no LTE, but does have free voice/text roaming. $70 (+taxes/fees) for 2 phones, 2000 minutes (shared), 5000 texts (shared), and 500 MB (shared).

Either would work and save you boatloads. Both on AT&T's network.

just picked up the Moto G with Republic. phone should be here in a week or so
I think Hulk has mentioned in here that Sprint's 3G is terribly slow. Should have went with the Moto X my friend
i barely use my phone as it is. haven't even had a smart phone yet. so i'm not terribly worried about 3g speeds.

also, i'm incredibly cheap
I have the Moto G, so I wasn't knocking the phone choice. I like my phone quite a bit.

Hulk,

Big one here..would like to go from $180 per month for 1400 minutes (and no texting) amongst 6 people (kid in college and in-laws) on Verizon at the end of the month to whatever is cheapest (can switch carriers, but a little worried about Sprint and T-mobile towers out here)....

1. Me -- about 300 minutes a month, probably 500 texts a month (would like 200 mb of data or so), main zip code 63367

2. Wife -- about 400 minutes, probably on the order of 500-1000 texts a month, main zip code 63367, but wants good coverage at 63552 for the 2 weeks she is there (middle of nowhere MO -- complained about the kid with the Selectel plan below not getting good coverage there, but she and the kid in college did have good coverage with their phones on the Verizon plan, grr)

3. kid in college -- about 500 min, 3k texts, data not too critical (63367 and 63501 for school)

4. kid at home -- on a 2000 min, 1500 text plan for $75 through Selectel (63367)

5. Mother in law -- 1000 minutes a month, 1500 texts, data not too critical (78521 and 63501 for 6 months each)

6. Father in law -- 150 minutes a month, minimal if any texting (78521 and 63501 for 6 months each) -- looking at the Selectel $75 plan for him.

Truly looking at Selectel plans that fit this criteria IF the 63552 extended network thing is an anomoly. Thanks for any direction you can give!

mostly from the office

well, ####.

already ordered. and as luck would have it, dropped my Blackberry  on the floor 2 days later and basically wrecked it. can't wait long to replace the thing.

Wait, so $180 a month is currently what all of this costs? Does that include phone subsidies?

Yea I was thinking this too. Can't get much better than that

No -- I am paying per text now (and that can be over well over $200 a month). Looking at Selectel $30 a month plan (1200 minutes, 3000 texts, 200 MB data) for 4 of the 6 and the other 2 on the $75 per year plan. The big thing is this Selectel coverage thing as they say there is coverage, but it's so so in the middle of nowhere Missouri.

Alright Makoman,

Firstly for coverage, here are the assumptions, I'm operating under: For the St. Louis area, all 4 carriers are in play. For Brownsville, which as far as I can tell is practically in Mexico, it looks like Verizon is far and away the champion... but the other 3 still do okayish. So, I'm going to start out with everything in play and we can work from there if that just isn't the case. It would probably be best if your inlaws ask a few neighbors if they've used Sprint/T-Mo/AT&T and how it went.

This is what I put in the DB for mins/texts/data for everyone:

You: 300/500/200

Wife: 400/1000/50

Kid1: 500/3000/50

Kid2: 2000/1500/0

MIL: 100/1500/50

FIL: 150/0/0

If you want to tweak that, let me know.

So, if you run everyone through together, the absolute cheapest is Zact. Comes in at $137.10 and covers all 6 of your needs rolled together. Second cheapest would be Ting, coming in at $157.10. Both of these plans, the pricing changes based upon usage. So, if usage goes up, price goes up. Likewise if usage goes down, price goes down. Both are on Sprint's network BUT BOTH ROAM FOR FREE ON VERIZON, and this is complete roaming (talk, text, AND data). Now, both provide access to Sprint's LTE towers, but when roaming, datawise you only get Verizon's 3G (what Selectel would offer anyways). The main differences between the 2 is that Zact offer's parental controls (which you probably don't need) and Ting has a much larger phone selection. Ting will also chip in 25% for any ETFs you might have to pay and also has a mobile app to help monitor your usage. So, you'll have to decide if that is worth the extra $20 a month. I suggest you check out both of their websites though.

These are far and away your cheapest options. Next cheapest is Sprint's FRamily for $180 or AT&T's no contract shared plans for $190. And Selectel splitting the difference at $185.

I decided not to run these individually yet (only as a group) because honestly you're not going to get cheaper than Zact or Ting. Here is the thing... the phones you get for Zact or Ting... they will only work on Sprint carriers (with one exception available, the Nexus 5 on Ting would also work on AT&T and T-Mobile). So, you might not want to switch 6 people over and buy 6 phones @ off contract prices and then find out the coverage wasn't what you needed. So, maybe get 1 phone and test it out first, make sure the results are what you want to see. Another thing to keep in mind is that with Ting, you can buy an AirRave ($99) and install it in your home or your inlaw's home. Its a signal booster for Sprint. If its a close but not quite situation, it may make sense to do that as the lower cost will eventually make the cost of an AirRave or two up.

Good luck!

Hulk, I've got 3 phones moved over to Ting and estimate monthly savings coming in now around $40-$45. By the time I move my phone over as well, I'll easily be saving over $700 per year.

Thank you, Hulk. Now I can finally ramp up that smack habit I've been working on.

I'm glad to help :)

Whenever I get my website up and running, I'll be counting on all of you to help publicize it. What kinda sucks is that I honestly could've made a couple grand from all of the advice I've doled out here if I had the site up already.

Same boat as you. I've been eyeing the Moto G with Republic for a while now, waiting on reviews. Keep us posted...especially curious to hear if the camera is a bad and blurry as they say it is. I've never owned a smart phone either. Current cell is a six year old LG using AT&T.

Ting just did a weird internet thing where they invited us to watch live as they gave one of their "ground crew" $10,000 for basically no good reason. I think they were hoping it would turn into some sort of viral thing but It was just kind of awkward.

I got the email but didn't watch. There was no reason? Lol.

wifi quite working on an iPhone? Blow dry it till it overheats (really) and it'll kick back in. Focus the heat around the 1/8" jack at the top. Might have to do it once a month or so, but that should work.

Just checked with Ting and my device (iPhone 4s from Verizon) is not compatible with their network. Who else might I try?

Just switched from a Family Plan at AT&T that was costing us $215/mo (with corporate discount) for 4 iPhone 4s', unlimited text, a stoopid amount of rollover minutes that we never approached...and a "whopping" 200mb  of cellular data per phone. That was $215 for a good month where nobody went over on the data at a rate of $15 per additional 200mb...

Where did we go? AT&T.

Family Share plan (corporate discounted) with unlimited text, unlimited calling and... 10GB of data... for $160. :o

Jailbreaking or going to the Verizon store and asking them to unlock it not really an option then, eh?
it's not about that so much as it is about their radios and technology being incompatible with everyone else.

The camera is pretty lousy. Only complaint I have with it.

Ok. I looked at PagePlus and SelecTel and they both seemed okay. At least worth a shot for a month. Are the other services head and shoulders above or something?

There are, literally, no other options for bringing á Verizon phone. You'll have to call them to make sure yours will work, it's not a lock.

Wow, the 1+ One was just officially announced and I'd say it looks like its the new king of the high end unlocked market. $299 for the 16GB and $349 for the 64GB. This thing pretty much outspecs everything.

My only concern is that it is pretty dang big. But I do have giant Otis hands, so maybe it would work for me.

I was planning on jumping from my Nexus 4 to the Nexus 6 this fall, but maybe I go with this instead. I'll wait and see I guess.
