I am set up with Consumer Cellular now. I had lots of issues trying to transfer my government number, and they really did a nice job talking me through. Then there was some stuff that needed to be done to set up data on my phone, and they called me three times to assist. Will report back on the service and pricing after I have it for a few months, but the customer service is really top-notch.

WIfe and I are on ATT and I know I am no longer under contract not sure about her if any of that matters. We pay about $165 a month for pretty much unlimited everything. We like our iPhones but if it meant saving a fair amount of cash I would switch from them. We use very little voice, are power text users she's around 4k a month and I am at 1k, we have wifi at work and home but still can use a fair amount of data. We spend a lot of time on the road traveling but it's to family within a couple of hours away. Zip 72855 we get a discount with ATT for being educators. Not sure what all you need, but maybe you can tell me how to save a little. Thanks, great thread! Big fan of saving money.

I was very surprised by the talk time. It was mostly me but then I got to thinking about it I have 2 children from another marriage that live away from me and I talk to them nightly. The rest is mostly on my wife and kids. I text a lot for work but it does appear that we are power users.

I have read 5 books over the past 6 months (I seldom sleep more than 4-5 hours). Have any good ones you'd recommend?

Well, for the Raleigh area, looks like Sprint is rated the worst on both cellreception and rootmetrics. It looks like that rating is mostly driven by data speeds... call quality/drops may be slightly worse with Sprint, but that is probably a minor difference.

If she were to leave Sprint coverage, she would require a new phone.

If you're looking for 1500 minutes (shared), 300ish texts, and not too much data since you have wifi everywhere (call it 500 MB?), then you could save a LOT of money.

For example, on Ting you could have 2100 minutes, 1000 texts, and 500 MB to share between you guys for $64 a month total (plus taxes/fees). On Zact something similar is even cheaper @ $53.89, but no Nexus and your phone options are more limited.

If you guys keep your existing phones, you could go straight over to Consumer Cellular. Use AT&T's towers, but no LTE. 1000 minutes, 15,000 texts, and 2 GB of data would run you just $70. Or, if you want LTE and the same phones, AIO wireless would give you unlimited calls/texts and 2.5GB per line for $90 a month.

If you're willing to get new phones and are cool w/ Sprint's coverage, Zact will meet your needs for just $64.03 and Ting for $70.50.

Both AIO and Consumer Cellular can meet your needs.

AIO has LTE (but throttled to max of 8 MBps), but no roaming. $70 (+taxes/fees) for 2 phones, unlimited calls and texts and 500 MB per line.

Consumer Cellular has no LTE, but does have free voice/text roaming. $70 (+taxes/fees) for 2 phones, 2000 minutes (shared), 5000 texts (shared), and 500 MB (shared).

Either would work and save you boatloads. Both on AT&T's network.

No -- I am paying per text now (and that can be over well over $200 a month). Looking at Selectel $30 a month plan (1200 minutes, 3000 texts, 200 MB data) for 4 of the 6 and the other 2 on the $75 per year plan. The big thing is this Selectel coverage thing as they say there is coverage, but it's so so in the middle of nowhere Missouri.

Firstly for coverage, here are the assumptions, I'm operating under: For the St. Louis area, all 4 carriers are in play. For Brownsville, which as far as I can tell is practically in Mexico, it looks like Verizon is far and away the champion... but the other 3 still do okayish. So, I'm going to start out with everything in play and we can work from there if that just isn't the case. It would probably be best if your inlaws ask a few neighbors if they've used Sprint/T-Mo/AT&T and how it went.

This is what I put in the DB for mins/texts/data for everyone:

You: 300/500/200

Wife: 400/1000/50

Kid1: 500/3000/50

Kid2: 2000/1500/0

MIL: 100/1500/50

FIL: 150/0/0

If you want to tweak that, let me know.

So, if you run everyone through together, the absolute cheapest is Zact. Comes in at $137.10 and covers all 6 of your needs rolled together. Second cheapest would be Ting, coming in at $157.10. Both of these plans, the pricing changes based upon usage. So, if usage goes up, price goes up. Likewise if usage goes down, price goes down. Both are on Sprint's network BUT BOTH ROAM FOR FREE ON VERIZON, and this is complete roaming (talk, text, AND data). Now, both provide access to Sprint's LTE towers, but when roaming, datawise you only get Verizon's 3G (what Selectel would offer anyways). The main differences between the 2 is that Zact offer's parental controls (which you probably don't need) and Ting has a much larger phone selection. Ting will also chip in 25% for any ETFs you might have to pay and also has a mobile app to help monitor your usage. So, you'll have to decide if that is worth the extra $20 a month. I suggest you check out both of their websites though.

These are far and away your cheapest options. Next cheapest is Sprint's FRamily for $180 or AT&T's no contract shared plans for $190. And Selectel splitting the difference at $185.

I decided not to run these individually yet (only as a group) because honestly you're not going to get cheaper than Zact or Ting. Here is the thing... the phones you get for Zact or Ting... they will only work on Sprint carriers (with one exception available, the Nexus 5 on Ting would also work on AT&T and T-Mobile). So, you might not want to switch 6 people over and buy 6 phones @ off contract prices and then find out the coverage wasn't what you needed. So, maybe get 1 phone and test it out first, make sure the results are what you want to see. Another thing to keep in mind is that with Ting, you can buy an AirRave ($99) and install it in your home or your inlaw's home. Its a signal booster for Sprint. If its a close but not quite situation, it may make sense to do that as the lower cost will eventually make the cost of an AirRave or two up.

Same boat as you. I've been eyeing the Moto G with Republic for a while now, waiting on reviews. Keep us posted...especially curious to hear if the camera is a bad and blurry as they say it is. I've never owned a smart phone either. Current cell is a six year old LG using AT&T.

wifi quite working on an iPhone? Blow dry it till it overheats (really) and it'll kick back in. Focus the heat around the 1/8" jack at the top. Might have to do it once a month or so, but that should work.

Just switched from a Family Plan at AT&T that was costing us $215/mo (with corporate discount) for 4 iPhone 4s', unlimited text, a stoopid amount of rollover minutes that we never approached...and a "whopping" 200mb of cellular data per phone. That was $215 for a good month where nobody went over on the data at a rate of $15 per additional 200mb...

Where did we go? AT&T.

There are, literally, no other options for bringing á Verizon phone. You'll have to call them to make sure yours will work, it's not a lock.

My only concern is that it is pretty dang big. But I do have giant Otis hands, so maybe it would work for me.

I was planning on jumping from my Nexus 4 to the Nexus 6 this fall, but maybe I go with this instead. I'll wait and see I guess.

just picked up the Moto G with Republic. phone should be here in a week or so

I think Hulk has mentioned in here that Sprint's 3G is terribly slow. Should have went with the Moto X my friend

i barely use my phone as it is. haven't even had a smart phone yet. so i'm not terribly worried about 3g speeds.

Same boat as you. I've been eyeing the [SIZE=11.818181991577148px]Moto G with Republic for a while now, waiting on reviews. Keep us posted...especially curious to hear if the camera is a bad and blurry as they say it is. I've never owned a smart phone either. Current cell is a six year old LG using AT&T.[/SIZE]
