Been lurking in this one for a while now but I have decided to see what's out there..
Currently on ATT. Service is great but wondering if the price could be beat.
2gb of data that I get dangerously close to each month
Unlimited texts required.
Haven't exceeded 500 minutes in the last 6 months.
Located in northeast PA. Open to any suggestions you might have.

Currently on ATT family plan with 2 GB data, unlimited mobile to mobile, and text. I usually on wi-fi, b/c I have such a low data cap and still come close to hitting 2 GB due to Facebook, IG, and the like. Really considering switching to T-Mobile since streaming music from Spotify and similar apps will not count towards data anymore.
$60 from T-Mobile is unlimited talk and text and "unlimited data" up to 3 GB LTE data (throttled afterwards) which comes with streaming music not counting towards data caps. Not a big video watcher on my cell so this pretty much means unlimited data for me.
This thread is so long wondering if there's anything comparable to that. I also have a Nexus 5 so I don't have to switch phones right away although I'm looking at getting a Galaxy 5 once the price drops.
I live in the Bay Area, CA so coverage should be good but T-Mobile is also letting people "test drive" their network for 7 days for free. Just need to have a credit card on file and be willing to go to a T-Mobile store to return it. I ordered my test drive kit today. So hopefully the network checks out.

If you're not afraid of Sprint's coverage you could try out Ring Plus Mobile. $33 unlimited calls/texts and 2 GB of data. They're phone selection is a bit more restrictive than any of the GSM options though.Trey said:
The next cheapest options including LTE are via Straight Talk or Net10 when enrolled in autopay... both would cost you $45, both are available on all 4 carriers (so you could keep the same AT&T coverage). Main difference is Net10 includes free voice/text roaming, and Straight talk gives an extra 500MB of data (3GB vs 2.5).
If you don't care about data speeds, there are some cheapo options out there too. Walmart Family Mobile has you covered for $39.88. But personally, I'd spring the extra $5 for the LTE.

Its not a bad plan by any stretch. For what you need, you can check out some cheaper options I just listed in the post immediately before this one. The only thing you really lose out on with those is the customer service and the ability to walk into a physical store. Which hasn't been an issue for me, but it can be for some. Also, data roaming (T-Mo does) and none of them offer the wi-fi calling T-Mobile includes, but thats not typically a deal breaker and they're apps that can do that anyways.No. 16 said:

Went to a wireless dealer to see about getting my Verizon phone ready to use with Page Plus or Selectel. Bad news is that my piece #### phone would only be able to run data at 1X speeds with either service (it's a POS phone, but it is a 4G LTE phone).
Somewhat good news is that before learning that, I called Verizon to get my unlock code, and they immediately offered to drop phone bill from $90 down to $60 and give me phone. Obviously they wanted another 2-year agreement that I'm trying avoid.
Not sure what I'm going to do, but thought I'd mention that if anybody wants to pull the Direct TV cancellation move with their cell company.

Because I would still probably exceed limit and I am fine paying the few extra bucks to not be concerned with overages. My point is high speed isn't really a big deal at the moment.

I used to think like that. But then I figured out what my actual usage was. If I went over one month a year, and that cost me $15, thats a lot cheaper than paying $5 more a month for unlimited. But if I was going over like every 3 months, then unlimited would make sense.
Essentially, I'm all about quantifying what you actually use/need, and pairing it with what works for that. If you can't quantify, you can't find the best fit imo.
If you have an Android phone, you can see your month to month data usage via the settings menu.

I have an iPhone 3gs. The usage in my settings says 246MB sent, 937MB received. I don't know how to determine what time frame that covers.
I looked around this morning and it looks like Straight Talk is probably the way to go.

Does that include or exclude Wi-Fi usage? I've never had an iPhone so I haven't the slightest.
If you don't mind slow data, you can probably do better than Straight Talk. For example, Net10 has an unlimited calls/texts + 500 MB of LTE data plan. Once you pass 500 MBs, the speed drops to 2G (about .1 MB per second download speed). So, if you don't care about speed, this is $5 cheaper.

How reliable do you guys find the AT&T coverage map (or any coverage map for that matter)?
If I could just find some way to be sure I'd get voice and data coverage (at any speed) at one specific address, I'd just go buy a phone and sign up with an AT&T MVNO. If not, I pretty much have to stay with Verizon or a Verizon MVNO.
For that address, it's rural (but only 3 miles from a highway) and the coverage appears to stop a few hundred yards from the house.
Also, are there any sites similar to cellreception.com or opensignal.com that have information that's not 5+ years old?

Any suggestions?

StraightTalk has some of the worst customer service known to man.
On the flip side, I hear great things about Consumer Cellular's customer service. Hulk can verify, probably.

Voice -- under 200 mins (often under 100)
Data -- under about 2GB usually, one month had almost 4GB but it looks like an outlier

Does anyone else do international texting? I can send but can't receive and Consumer Cellular says my international plan is turned on. I tried looking up settings for iphone 4s, but everything that was suggested still hasn't worked. Frustrating. Anyone?

Consumer Cellular (AT$T) has 200 minutes, 5000 texts, and 2.5GB for $45 a month, no contract. Their customer service is also phenomenal.

T-Mobile $30 plan. 100 minutes, unlimited texts, 5GB of LTE data. Minutes past 100 cost an extra ten cents. Seems perfect for you.

I have had this plan for about a year now. Only problem is lack of t-mobile coverage in some areas. And by lack, I mean non-existent.

There are probably a dozen options like this you can use. I think fb messenger is popular with the foreign ho's as well. Unless you are sending a bunch of noods. Who makes international texts/calls anymore? That is about as old fashioned as sending email.
Hulk, I'm on T-Mobile prepaid using an N4, if I wanted to switch to Consumer Cellular/AT&T do I need a new microchip thing or do I just call them up and switch over the phone? And can I port my current # to Consumer Cellular?

yup. Thing is, roaming only kicks in if you have 0 service from T-Mobile. If you have like a real crummy T-Mobile connection, you're stuck with it
