Say you got an all expense paid trip to Sochi (1 Viewer)

No and it has nothing to do with the terrorism stuff. I do agree with IS though there is going to be an attack. Whether it is successful or not I don't know but someone is going to try.

First class arifare, above average lodging...

I'm prob going, leaving the family behind though - I'll tell the wife it is for her safety, but really it'll just be a mental vacation for me.

Winter Olympics are the one time you can try to score with a biathlete, so yeah I'm in.

Oh wait.

Seems like Russia can't win. First, everyone assumes there will be an attack. Then, everyone says their security measures are invasive. Terrorists will go after soft targets around the game so fans are at risk traveling to and fro but in Sochi, people will see more security than people have seen anywhere else.

DPI has legitimate uses, but in this case it is apparently aimed at allowing authorities to filter email for key words and track who's talking to whom, as well as what they're saying. In short, Soldatov explained to CBC News, every phone call, every email, every social media message in Sochi will be accessible, traceable by Russia's Federal Security Service — the FSB — the organization in charge of securing the Olympics...

These security measures range from the deployment of a whole brigade of elite special forces to the unprecedented requirement of background checks for spectators...

So Sochi is sealed tight, its streets a gauntlet of checkpoints under the vigilant watch of at least 70,000 police and soldiers. As well, an entire brigade of elite special forces are deployed in the mountains nearby. On top of that, Russia's Olympic arsenal will include anti-ballistic missiles, an underwater sonar system, even underwater machine guns. Another part of the arsenal are drones that will be, for the first time, monitoring the Games from above, as well as robotic bomb detectors that will prowl the Olympic grounds below.

I'd be on the first plane...but I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I brought my daughters with me, and something happened where they were physically/emotionally scarred for life (i.e. a terrorist attack that directly impacted them...being injured/killed, seeing others injured/killed, etc.). But if it's just me? Heck yeah. Free travel/lodging and expenses covered...to spend a couple weeks seeing a new part of the world and pushing my peripheral vision even a few degrees wider (minimizing the effect of the "blinders" we all wear, like it or not)? I'll throw some clothes in a bag and hop in the car in the next 5-6 minutes if it were a real offer.

So because one person (heck, let's even say it's 100 persons) is going to blow themselves up in a city of millions, killing 10-20 (again, let's say 1,000-2,000, for argument's sake), everyone should run for their lives?

We're doing it exactly wrong related to terrorism. We spend trillions and scare the "ba-jeebus" out of grandma and grandpa with the 24/7 "Death Panel" network that is Fox News...when what we SHOULD do is make it known to terrorists that if you give us a "cut/bruise," we'll find out where you're from, find where your family lives, then send in drones to salt the Earth within five miles of said location...making you watch. THEN kill you...slow.

Terror is defined as "extreme fear." Fear is defined as "to be afraid of (someone or something) as likely to be dangerous, painful, or threatening." Specific to terrorism, do you think the goal is killing people? Or do you think the goal is fear? The destruction of peace of mind, as well as the resulting destruction of an economy from said loss of peace of mind? The former gets all the press/play. But I believe the goal of terrorism is actually the latter. Though if it is actually the latter, the US has been engaged in "terrorism" probably since its expansion West across the Appalachians and Plains.

Tellya who's doing it wrong:

The International Olympic Committee - because who in their right flippin' mind would agree to do an Olympics in the Caucusus, home to Daghestan and Chenya and just a hop skip and molotov cocktail away from the world's terrorist epicenters?

It's one thing to say well the west invites trouble or don't know how to deal with it, it's another to go walking right into its neighborhood looking for it.

I'm hoping Fallujah gets the next Summer Games.

I think there's still a few buildings left up in Sarajevo that can be reused.

I'd go to watch the curling, but I don't have a ####### clue most of the time what is going on so it's better watched from my couch. Other stuff that I like like the halfpipe would be useless to watch in person.

Put me down in the camp that thinks a terrorist threat is fairly low risk here.

The sochi bomber chick is actually pretty hot. Anyone got a non burka-d pic of her? Maybe a swimsuit pic?

I wouldn't be nervous about being in Sochi. I'd be worried about the surrounding areas. Security at Sochi will be nuts.
this. It's highly likely that something will be attempted, but likely it will fail.

On the road, air travel, etc? Seems much riskier.

What, are you nuts? With HD TVs there is really no reason to go to the stadium anymore for Curling. Traffic is atrocious and concessions are overpriced. At home you can always pause the action on your DVR between the sixth and seventh stones when that 40 of Labatts is really needing release without missing a single stone landing on the button.

I heard they are talking about putting wifi into curling stadiums to try to get people there, able to still control their fantasy curling leagues while at the game, but the in-stadium experience is just not what it used to be. Not when I can have my man cave with 8 HD screens tuned into all the must-see curling going on at once. And with the advent of the soon to come White Zone channel, you can see every crucial sweep even with just a single TV.

Here are the bidding cities for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Isn't Borat from Kazakhstan?

Krakow, Poland

Oslo, Norway

Almaty, Kazakhstan

Lviv, Ukraine

Beijing, China

Stockholm, Sweden [cancelled their bid last week]

Of all the people I would enjoy seeing the muslims piss off simply because the response would be brutal, Putin is right near the top of my list. Let's see if these clowns really want a war.
I'm not sure I'd want to embarass Putin on a global stage like this... If they do attack the olympics I expect retribution to be sudden, severe, and the rest of the world to turn a blind eye to the massacre that would go down .

You don't attack the olympics and expect ANYONE to have your back when the other shoe drops.

Anyone else have this image in their mind when they read Datonn posts?

I don't think an attack will happen, I think Putin will have it on lock down while he is out freeing caged animals. However with that being said I still don't think I would go, if it were the Summer Olympics, I would consider going, but no interest what so ever in the Winter Olympics.

We now know things are much worse over there than anyone imagined when this thread was started. I'm glad the media has to endure horrific conditions but I feel for our athletes' families.

More important questions:

First Class airfare?

What type of hotel accommodation? Like luxury suite at the Ritz or queen bed at a Best Western?
Because it's international, let's say First Class. As for hotel, I'd say above average. Not the best, but a good, nice place.
A good nice place by our current standards, or a good nice place in comparison to other Sochi resorts?

If I have to drop my toilet paper in an adjacent bucket to the toilet, I'm def out!
