Schefter: "Will not surprise me" if Anderson beats Leinart (1 Viewer)

Sorry - pay content here so I don't want to post excerpts, but Schefter did indeed say not so fast on Anderson being the backup and Leinart starting, that he is hearing Anderson is impressing in OTAs.

It has been pretty clear for a while now that Whisenhunt and co. don't trust Leinart. I still see some out there thinking he could be a breakout QB this season, I wouldn't waste a pick on him. I would trade him for whatever I could get in any dynasty leagues before the negative buzz picked up steam.

Remember, the team handed the job to Leinart in 08 and he promptly dropped it with an implosion vs. the Raiders in the preseason. Warner did not "win" the job, Leinart lost it. The team really wanted Leinart to take that next step and instead he regressed. He'll do it again, you can count on it.
I disagree.the value of Anderson is already low. there is no point in trading him. if he doesnt amount to much, you arent getting much in return, and if he does, you've ripped yourself off.

I believe that the offense has all the pieces to do well, the only question is who the QB will be. so with that being said, you hang onto Leinart, and pick up Anderson on the cheap before word gets out that he has a shot at the starting gig. then no matter what happens, you have the starting QB for the Cards who gets to toss the ball to Fitz & Breaston. Not a bad duo.....

once the starter has been established, you would be able to unload that player for much more than what you'd get for either (or both) of them now.
This could easily be a situation where both guys just suck like last year in Cleveland. Taking Quinn AND Anderson last year would have gotten you nowhere except with two less picks spent on players that could actually help you. I think the best angle is to stay away from ARI QB. It isnt like the backup QBs are shallow this year, you can be the last one to take one in a 12 team league and still get Campbell or Cassel or MMoore or Freeman
I agree 1000% with Bloom on this, avoid the AZ QB situation. What are the odds that it is going to be successful? Why are people wanting to take a risk here? I would much rather roll the dice on Big Ben in round 10 to pair with someone like Eli because after week 4 or 5 you have a deadly combo, btw that combo was pretty tight last year too. Watch him on somone else's roster. Can you see yourself starting Leinart with confidence during the year? I can't and YOU NEVER WANT TO DRAFT A PLAYER THAT YOU YOURSELF WOULD NOT WANT TO START HENCE HE NEVER MAKES MY ROSTER.

To be fair, Anderson does have some track record of success. Joe Montana would have blown lobbing passes to Massaquoi et al on last year's Browns. The Cards, even post-Boldin, probably still have a top 5 overall receiving corps. Definitely top 10. Classic great all around pass catcher combined with field stretcher combo. And Doucet looks like better than average depth.

Wouldn't SHOCK me to see Anderson do okay. I'm not predicting it, but I wouldn't mock anyone who did. (Like I did with Leinart.)

I wouldnt say top 10 for ARI WRs, Breaston is unproven as a #2, Doucet has trouble staying healthy. Their #4 is an undrafted rookie. Anderson might have his moments against the STL and SEA's of the world, but he is still very shaky, although he is a totally different QB when he is confident and his WRs are making plays.

anderson starting preseason game 3 (multiple reports)...

lombardi has speculated that leinart could be traded or even cut if he isn't the starter by week 1...

"Matt Leinart will come off the bench behind Derek Anderson in the Cardinals' third preseason game Saturday.

Leinart isn't officially out as the starter yet, but it's a virtual certainty now unless Anderson faceplants. Leinart has earned the nickname of "Captain Checkdown" while looking tentative in the pocket and failing to move the ball in preseason games. It is also rumored that Larry Fitzgerald thought Leinart's weak arm would put the star receiver in harm's way too often. The report from NFL Network's Mike Lombardi that Leinart could be released before the season now has real merit." Aug. 26 - 3:17 pm et

I think my feelings on Leinart solidified after reading this blog report from the Cards training camp. For context they're talking about trying to get a football in a garbage can from 45 yds.

Alas kicker Jay Feely and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald were involved and by the time the competition was over — three points for in the bucket, two for hitting the rim, one for hitting anywhere on the can — Feely had won. “It’s all luck,” Leinart said afterward. How many points did Feely get? He just grinned. “The most,” he said.
Your kicker wins, and your starting QB makes an excuse that "it's all luck". Yeah, it may just be a game to pass some time, but you're a starting QB in the NFL, you throw things for millions of dollars, it is not all luck.http://blog.azcardinals.com/page/2/

PS: Derek Anderson lost to Feely too. The Cards are screwed.

BTW, in another one of the same competition, Porter, a linebacker, tied Leinart with one out of 25. And Leinart made the same excuse.
