Screwed myself as commish... (1 Viewer)

Organized Chaos

Warning, this is a venting thread...

So, I've been the commish of a local league since 2002 and this year I totally screwed myself because I got too busy and didn't double check some of the league settings.

History:

Local league, $75 buy in, all friends, many I would consider good friends. We have had a co-commish for about 4 years or so that helps having an impartial opinion among other things. About 4 or 5 years ago, we locked the waivers once the playoffs started and would allow you to aquire a backup of your player if there was an injury to give the playoff teams the opportunity to not get screwed by an injury.

So, fast forward to this year. I was insanely busy during the beginning of the year and I forgot to set the waivers to lock week 13, then when the playoffs came around, I completely forgot about the locked waivers rules and allowed about 20 transactions to occur weeks leading up to rounds 1 and 2 in the playoffs (about 4 waiver moves by myself included).

Well, on Sat before the SB, the Jones-drew owner (also the co-commish) contacts me suggesting the waivers should have been locked and he had the right to his backup that was picked up a week before. After realizing our mistake, I suggest we have to leave it be as it was caught way to late and games have already been completed etc, and it was his fault as well as it was mine. He pushes back a little and contacts the team he's playing to talk about it with him. Here's where it gets a little crazy, the team he's facing in the SB is the team that just beat me to move to the SB and I look at our rosters to see "what if"...

I made some bad waiver decisions and had the waivers been locked and I was forced to play what I had on my roster (even taking the lowest score at those positions), I would have beat his team and been in and won the SB. He made two waivers, K and D, the K swing in our game was 13 points (wash vs Oak) and I lost by 7 with the bad decision lineup in (forced roster lineup has me with this by 20+).

So, all things considered, it falls on me missing the waiver lock, but damn it still stings knowing what could have happened had I set it up right. If I were not the commish in this league, I would have sent an email to the commish once the first waiver move happened, but as commish I slipped and because of it I lose out on $300..

That's surely a bummer.

That's a big screw-up you got there. I'm surprised nobody noticed it after the first week of illegal waivers went through. Normally, I'd expect it'd have been noticed by a team which did not attempt waivers (because he knew they were forbidden by rule) and then was surprised to see all the moves. At least, that's how it would have happened in my league, had I made the same error.

"it was his fault as well as it was mine"

You sure about that? He is co-commish. If that means he's your equal, I guess you're right. If he's your assistant commish, it's all back on you.

From reading your post, not knowing all the details, I don't think you got screwed. While I could see a case for past games having gone final at some juncture, I can also see the flaming, screaming case for those games all featuring illegal lineups.

My league is hosted on CBS. We close waivers at the end of the season. I always find it a HUGE pita that I have remember to disable waivers for the league OR disallow owners from performing waivers. (The interface is very busy, and this process requires one to be certain what was undone, in order to redo it exactly the same way the following season.) I do feel it would be MUCH BETTER if the site provided a customizable waivers cutoff week. Is it so uncommon that a league closes waivers after a certain point?

I have nightmares about doing exactly what you have done. (Though, again, I am pretty surprised that 20 illegal waiver moves were processed and a full week of playoffs came and went bfore anybody noticed the mistake.) What I do to try to prevent this is set up email reminders. When I open waivers at the start of the regular season, I set up email reminders on two separate Yahoo mail accounts, so that I get an email one week and one day before I need to close waivers after Week 14 is in the books. Likelwise, after I close waivers after week 14, I set up email reminders, so that I get emails reminding me to open waivers at the beginning of the following season.

Good Luck!

This part is key.You didn't just forget to implement the rule. You forgot the actual rule. And so did most of your league.

Why don't you just leave the waiver wire open til the season is over?

I only lock out the players that don't make the playoffs, and even if I forget, once it comes across that an owner did make a move, I just go in and resverse then lock them out.

Much easier for the commish, and nice to be able to keep making moves due to injury.

didnt you make 4 moves or did i read that wrong?
Yeah :lmao: I just assumed I had it set right and forgot about the rule.

Yup, that's why I felt I had to bite the bullet on this one.

Yeah, we're going to talk about this when we have our post-season party next week and probably do away with the rule anyway. Thanks for the responses guys, I was just really pissed at the way I let it slip and needed a place to vent.
