SD Chargers -- How important is the #3 Seed (1 Viewer)

Over the years I recall a lot of lackluster efforts in Week 17 by playoff teams, who still had something to play for in terms of playoff "seeding".

I'd like to think that the Chargers should be focused on winning an easily winnable game on Sunday vs. the Jamarcus-led Raiders in Oakland.

The #3 seed would allow SD to potentially avoid Jacksonville in Week 1 and New England in Week 2 of the playoffs, both which would seem like worthwhile objectives.

Rivers has a gimpy knee and could use some rest. LT has always been rested when the opportunity presents itself.

Any insight from Charger Faithful as to how you all think that they may approach this game would be greatly appreciated.

I'm not a Charger fan but it's very obvious that the Chargers will play this game to win. There is no doubt that any team would rather face Ten/Cle at home and then Indy instead of Jacksonville and then NE.

I am a Raider fan, and it's very obvious to me that they could rest Rivers and LT and walk away w/ this one. Probably why the Steelers are resting Big Ben... 'cause the Bolts won't lose to Oakland.

I thought the Chargers had all this revenge motivation and would beat the Pats 9 out of ten times they played them. Now I'm supposed to believe they've tucked their tails and are running from the spectre of New England??

This is a message board and more than likely the Chargers players are not actually posting here. Perhaps the players do want another crack at the Patriots

Yeah, it's a message board full of people trying to dope out the motivations of the Chargers. Think about it --- last year they were everybody's superbowl darlings and got #####slapped by the Pats in their own house on national tv. Next, their grudge match is all hyped up by the media, and they come out saying they were the better team last year, the Pats got lucky, they'd win 9 of 10, etc, and they get absolutely humiliated again in from of the entire country. If it was me, and I got my nuts cut off like that, I'd do anything I could to get a chance at erasing that memory. Unless, of course, they're just beaten dogs at this point.

I agree with you. I honestly do think that the Chargers (mainly LT) want nothing more than another shot at the Pats. They may actually want this more than even the superbowl....

So your definition of #####slapped is to play your worst game of the season and still only lose by a FG? Good enough.

Funny how San Diego seems to play it's worst game of the year against the Pats the last couple years......

Pats must be really lucky like that.

That playoff game was as close as it was because the Pats played one of their worst games of the season --- see, that goes both ways. Of course, the Pats still won.

Yeah, the year before the playoff loss the Chargers played their worst game of the season and beat New England 41-17 on the road.

Enjoy your memories.
What was your excuse when the Colts bytchslapped the Patriots in the second half of the AFC championship game last year? And what will it be when the same thing happens in Foxboro this year? The Chargers? They're good (being underestimated by many), but they won't get past the Colts in the second round.

Well. I tell you what, purestrength --- if the Colts meet the Pats again this year, be sure to start a thread after the game and I'll tell you. I'll be here -- will you?edit: and don't circumvent the swear filter.

They want no part of Jacksonville, @NE, then @Indy. No thanks.
:lmao: There's also the remote possibility that as the 3 seed they could host the AFC Championship game IF they got past the first two rounds AND the Pats lost somehow. There are plenty of good reasons to want to be the 3 seed.

Wouldn't it still be possible to host the AFC championship game as a 4 seed in the unlikely event that the 6 seed won their first 2 games?

I believe so. But it would require the Chargers getting past the Pats in round two.

In the abstract, the #3 seed is preferable to the #4 seed, for plenty of reasons.

But that's not what matters to the Chargers this week. What matters to the Chargers is, or at least should be, kicking the Raiders' butts. It's the Raiders. They haven't been good for a while, but it's still a rivalry with plenty of history.

That's for sure. Tomlinson, for one, REALLY gets up for the hated Raiders. I would think Norv would have his reasons for a little payback also.

“We're going to play the Oakland game like we did (against the Broncos),” Turner said, meaning the starters will play until the game is out of reach one way or the other. “Certain guys, if the situation presents itself, we'll take care of.”
