What's the view out there on his current performance, upside possibility, and situation in CLE?

Is he more of a tackler/hitter or playmaker and can he be a top 10, or top 20, DB?

jones is having a breakout year... he came out as a junior, than blew his knee out in pre-season as a rookie... in his first season of action (05) he showed little & there were rumblings that he might be a bust...

this year to recap there was uncertainty about him in 06 pre-season as it was unclear whether he or brodney pool would play opposite brian russell, than later HC crennell said there would be a rotation...

i haven't check for him specifically in a few weeks, but he was top 10 in one of my leagues recently... he is the starter at SS his stats haven't seemed to be effected by pool playing in a rotation occasionally (pool played CB last week as CLE was decimated at position, but that is not a long-term situation)... he is putting up decent numbers & also making plays, with i think 2 INTs already in just 4 games (think browns had bye?)... he hasn't exactly been doing this a long time, but he is a great athlete (prep QB), and if his instincts & understanding of the game are beginning to catch up with his athleticism, than i don't think top 20 DB is a stretch... top 10 harder to say, but possible...

a factor is team he plays on... CLE has been poor offense statistically... for the time being, jones is on the field more & gets more chances to make tackles & big plays... as CLE offense improves (i think it will come around eventually), we could see his stats take a dip, so top 20 could be more realistic long term...

BTW, there is a difference between saying it is possible he could be top 20 in future & would i rank him there this year... if he continues to play this well he will definitely be moving up in my rankings for 07...

He is the Rodney Harrison in Cleveland's defense. I have Ronde, Sean Taylor, Jones and Glenn Earl and am happy with them.

Well just to give you an idea of what some people think of his value this year going forward......

Jones was recently traded straight up for TJ Houshmandzadeh in my main IDP league (12 year old league, no slackers in it). The original trade on the table was Sean Jones + Mike Patterson for Plaxico Burress. The scoring system we use in this league puts defensive players almost on par with offensive players. For example, right now Jones is sitting as the #6 DB in this league with 73 points. By looking at points alone, that would put him on par with the 12th best WR on the board.

With that said, most of the guys in our league have him pretty high up there with no reason to think he should decline. Nothing points to that at least. Even if the Browns somehow manage to improve on the offensive side of the ball this year, I dont believe that will affect his #'s in a negative way. He should have the position locked up to himself for the rest of the season and further.

Could very well be. I've seen him play a couple of times this year and he looks like the real deal.

I didn't mean he's as good as Rodney but that he plays the same role. We may soon see if he is the real deal. I got him and Glenn Earl as FA's and they re both doing pretty well. Hope Jones can stay healthy.

Right ... thats how I took it.

What is his long term value vs someone like Glen Earl?
Good question.I dropped Manuel and Ryan Clark and have both. Jones is the Rodney Harrison in this defense so he should be better long term.

I like Jones over Earl long term. IMO, Jones is the more talented player. Jones is better in coverage, Earl is somewhat one dimensial, he is best as an in-the-box safety, and can be exposed in coverage. From what I've seen of Jones, he has looked impressive.

...'Still don't understand the Rodney Harrison reference. Also, what's the basis/source of these rankings? Right now, we're at Jones>Earl because Jones=Harrison, w/o any reasoning provided.Explaining why Jones=Harrision would be the logical 1st step. They play the same position is all I've gotten so far, but so does Earl, so Earl could also be termed the "Rodney Harrison" of the HOU defense.

The Jones/Harrison has to do with Romeo Crennel and his defensive scheme/New England ties. Figuring Romeo will implement same scheme used when he was Defensive Coordinator in New England.

 IMO, a good way to help project or justify a small sample of current production for a "new" player on the scene is to find a good veteran comparison. In this case, we know that Romeo Crennel wants to run the hybrid front schemes that his former boss (and mentor) Bill Belichick did in New England. Crennel has also said a number of times that he's held Jones (and Pool) back because he wants his safet(ies) to be the quarterbacks of his defense and able to be a physical presence in rush, coverage, and run support. That's directly out of the Belichick playbook and directly traceable to Rodney Harrison, who Belichick brought to NE expressly for that purpose.Watching Jones play this year and examining the resulting box scores (21 solos, 2 INT, 5 PD), he's very reminiscent of Rodney Harrison in role, responsibility, usage, and production. Some have applied the same comparison to Kerry Rhodes, who is in a very similar situation with Eric Mangini, another Belichick "disciple" of the hybrid front scheme. As a couple of other posters suggested, we're not saying Jones (or Rhodes) are going to duplicate Rodney Harrison's stats. We're saying that they look to be given the same opportunity -- surrounding cast, talent, etc will determine whether they can make the same impact in the boxscore.Same thing goes for a player like Tommie Harris -- you might refer to him as the Warren Sapp undertackle of Chicago's Tampa-2 scheme. Or you could refer to Akin Ayodele as the Marvin Jones of Bill Parcells 3-4 defense. Sometimes, the comparison ends up not holding well at all. With respect to Glenn Earl...well, Earl is a replacement level NFL talent. We've had plenty enough sample size to make that determination. There's no direct comparison for Earl, other than we'd expect him to perform as a replacement level safety behind a good MLB on a crappy defense would perform. To me, that means he'll be inconsistent. He'll have some more opportunities by default (bad team, bad defense, on the field in running situations a alot) but may not be able to take advantage as often as a better player would (average talent, injury prone, behind Ryans). His average talent also makes him a prime candidate to hit the bricks when the Texans get around to addressing that position among all their other holes.Bottom line? I believe Jones>Earl in 2006 because he's a better player and will be used in such a way as to overcome some of the usual scheme limitations of being a SS in a 3-4 defense. In the future, Jones>>>>Earl, as I'm leery of Earl keeping his job long term.
