You have an opinion here, frenzy? I liked Bates play calling and thought he did a decent job with what he had to work with. Further, I thought they schemed so well a couple of weeks that they earned a win because of it.Per Schefter Twitter-Filed to ESPN: Now that Seahawks have fired Jeremy Bates in Seattle, Josh McDaniels has emerged as OC candidate. Same division as Rams.-Seahawks have been talking with former Broncos HC Josh McDaniels since Monday. Interesting.
This must fall under the heading of failure to make chicken soup out of chicken sheet.
No. Also, Bates is not a WCO guy. From what I understand he prefers more roll-outs and boots. It was apparent in the SEA-STL game in week 17. Whitehurst was given several chances to get outside the pocket that they wouldn't have attempted with Hasselbeck.gandalas said:I have no idea about him...was he in Seattle under Holmgren's reign?
As a follow up tho the bad play calling, after losing Carlson early in the game, Pete Carrol said something to the effect that "much of our offense is geared around the TE, after John went out, we were limited as we only had 1 active TE so we couldn't run alot of 2 TE packages..."Two things:1) If this is true, why do you only dress 2 TEs?2) What kind of OC completely throws out the game plan when 1 player gets hurt? (other than, say, your QB or star RB) Or had a game plan predicated on a position that you are so thin at? And no offense to Carlson - he is a decent TE, but this is not Jermichael Finley or Antonio Gates we're talking about here.Sorry - not to pile on the 'hawks when things are tough, but this firing makes alot of sense to me.DoubleG said:In last week's game, here is the stat line, more than any other that should have gotten him fired:Marshawn "The Beast" Lynch:Carries 4I understand that they were behind most of the game, but you have to at least try to run the ball.
The third TE was put in IR last week.I don't know that it was Bates choice to only suit up 2 TEs, but I do know that it had a major impact on their game plan. They went two TEs 42% of the time this past season (read it on the Mike Sando ESPN blog). Pete Carroll hired Bates in his last year at USC and then brought him over to Seattle this year. Bates is definitely NOT a Holmgren guy, in fact, he is the exact opposite. One of the "media fights" Bates and Hasselbeck had this year was when Bates said the WCO philosophy of "dinking and dunking" for 5 yards here and there in an attempt to construct a 15 play 80 drive was plain stupid and didn't work. Bates looks for big homerun type plays, which is probably why Seahawk fans were continiously exposed to 50 yard pass attempts on 3rd and 1 or 4th and 1. I think Bates was attempting to catch the defense off guard he didn't think to himself maybe there is a reason that the defense would be caught off guard and that's because it is absolutely idiotic to go for a 60 yard bomb on 4th and 1. All in all though, I appreciated Bates and thought that he had some great ability as a play constructor, and at a very young age he has a lot of growing available to him. I think he will make it one day and be a great OC.I'm really pissed though that they fired Bates without a handle on who they were going to hire. They may have been played by Mcdaniels, but I'm not sure. I just don't see many guys out there that are on Bates' level as an OC. Mcdaniels would have been definitely worth it, but who else is there, Bevell, Fisch or Zorn are guys the local media is playing up. All garbage if you ask me.On another note, I absolutely LOVE the Cable hiring as OL coach. The Raiders were down right stupid for letting Cable go after he turned the Raiders into a damn good team this year. They did have the 2nd best rushing attack in the league and Cable pretty much brought back Mcfadden from cardiac arrest. Hopefully he can work some of that magic in C-town.gandalas said:I wonder if Cleveland and Holmgren will make a run at Bates? I have no idea about him...was he in Seattle under Holmgren's reign?
the funniest part of this is that Carlson was absolutely non-existant in the regular season. I can't believe that he was so important when he basically caught zero passes in many Hawks games during the regular season. Carlson caught 2 TDs against the Saints in the 1st round of the playoffs, which tripled his TDs for the year from 1 to 3, lol. Seriously, I could have suited up and played Carlson's position and i doubt you would have noticed the difference. Realistically, an athletic lineman could have been put in his spot, and I'm sure they gave a lot of reps to "emergency" TEs since they use 2 TE sets and only had 2 TEs. What i'm trying to say is, that i feel this is a huge excuse. The loss of Carlson in reality probably made zero difference and they are using it as a reason why they sucked balls against the Bears.PS: don't worry about piling on the Hawks, I'll find you next week and pile on after the Packers absolutely demolish you guys at your homefield this weekend, lol...no seriously, i'll be there with my "don't mean to pile on" posts, lol...just kidding, good luck against the packers. One of the main reasons Carlson disappeared after his rookie season is because the OL sucks and he blocked as often as he went out.the funniest part of this is that Carlson was absolutely non-existant in the regular season.
