Yeah, think that is a pretty universally loved sequel. The 3rd one tends to be somewhat forgotten or at least not nearly as celebrated compared to the first two though.I am surprised to see the negativity for Back to the Future 2. That’s a perfect sequel.
The 2nd truly feels like the conclusion to the story. It just feels like it belongs. The third one feels out of place and very much like a sequel.Yeah, think that is a pretty universally loved sequel. I will fight you. that was god-awful. watched an episode plus of Obi Wan... better, mostly by having McGregor in it. but even that started getting goofy fast with the writing.Yes, Star Wars Eps 8 and 9 sucked, but some of you guys are missing out if you haven't seen some of the new content (e.g., The Mandalorian, Obi Wan Kenobi).
But don't all of the Star Wars films (even the originals) have some degree of goofiness in their scripts?I will fight you. that was god-awful. watched an episode plus of Obi Wan... better, mostly by having McGregor in it. but even that started getting goofy fast with the writing.

sameand I finally tapped out after Episode 8. I've never seen Episode 9 and I have no plans to do so.
El Floppo said:since we've segued into sequels that suck, not necessarily that killed the franchise... Fletch 2: the money grab... should be mentioned.
Great one. Fletch is probably my favorite movie of all time. Fletch 2 was a complete disaster, although it was filmed super-close to where my wife grew up.
Here's one I didn't see mentioned: True Detective on HBO. Season 1 with Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson was some of the best TV I've ever seen. Could not get enough of that. Season 2 with Colin Ferrell and Vince Vaughn was absolutely terrible. Complete poop-show.
I liked fletch 2 as much as the original![]()

People like to say this but it's not true.Grahamburn said:Star Wars has been pretty consistently bad throughout. You all just became adults.
What about those movies is more adult than the others? I don’t see the difference, but I didn’t grow up watching Star Wars when it originally came out. If you can accept that it’s all pretty silly they’re more fun.People like to say this but it's not true.
The OT treated the fans, including children, like adults.
Everything else has treated the fans, including adults, like children.
But the question was what sequel ruined the franchise. No sequel can really ruin a good original. Just don't watch the sequel.
The worst sequel of a great movie is Robocop 2.
There was no fart humor, for staters. What about those movies is more adult than the others? I don’t see the difference, but I didn’t grow up watching Star Wars when it originally came out. If you can accept that it’s all pretty silly they’re more fun.
Men born in 1965 or so take their Star Wars pretty seriously and aren’t real keen on admitting a big part of their childhood was silly kids’ stuff.
And I addressed that in the first part of my response - the answer is "None".But the question was what sequel ruined the franchise.
In the spirit of your idea here - I was surprised recently how bad Jurassic Park 2 was. Same great director and everything.
One that popped into my mind for the OP was Terminator: Salvation. I don't hate what part 3 was trying to do, but Salvation was a terrible watch at the theater.
People in here saying “the original trilogy” was so great lmao — no, you were just a kid and now it’s a happy memory you have. They’ve all been consistently poorly written and acted at times but we love the stories and the pew pews.Grahamburn said:Star Wars has been pretty consistently bad throughout. It came out before the first oneTenet II. What, you haven't seen it yet?
More serious than what? Episodes 1 and 2 I’ll give you. Probably not Sith or any of the new ones. Return of the Jedi is a joke from beginning to end.I just watched both Empire & Jedi yesterday (the pre-Special Edition versions) yesterday. It had been a while and it was striking to me how much more serious they are in tone.
Anyway, no need to go over all this about Star Wars...again.
And those super adult ewoks. There was no fart humor, for staters.
I remember when Lucas remixed ad limited re-released the original trilogy with some new special effects (iirc, in advance of the 2nd trilogy). My friends and I all saw SW (or whatever the hell it's called now) on opening night at the Ziegfeld (giant special occasion movie theater here in NYC). With the rest of the audience, spent a lot of it cheering at the nostalgia, but mostly laughing out loud at the not-remembered terrible writing and acting (primarily Hammill, who was godawful).People in here saying “the original trilogy” was so great lmao — no, you were just a kid and now it’s a happy memory you have. Yes, when I met my wife who is a bit younger than me, she had never seen Star Wars. I was excited to show them to her! You’re gonna love them! Mid-way through the first movie (IV) she said holy crap this acting is so bad why is this popular?I remember when Lucas remixed ad limited re-released the original trilogy with some new special effects (iirc, in advance of the 2nd trilogy). It was the first clearly played out Joseph Campbell hero-journey movies I can remember, which worked great. But the writing and acting didn't translate so well as an adult.
