Seventh Heaven: The Top 7 Fantasy Rookie RB's for 2009 (1 Viewer)

I believe Donald Brown is easily the most overrated rookie RB this year. Brown's only saving grace is his destination (but that's only if he can beat out Addai & get the majority of touches). I was actually kind of surprised Brown was drafted in the 1st round (despite all the pre-draft pub he got). Not saying he sucks, but I view his skill set as being pretty average. The Colts have a reputation as a good-drafting team, but I believe they WAY overdrafted this kid. Brown could still turn out to be a decent FF RB, but things are going to have to fall right for him.

On the other end of the scale, Bernard Scott is easily the best rookie RB for the money (or draft slot), IMO. Big-time talent, & not as big a character risk as you might imagine (yes, I'm aware of all of his arrests). I expect Scott to have a decent rookie season, & if he can stay focused, the sky is the limit.

I've definitely on board the Scott bandwagon. I've drafted him in as many leagues as I could, and he's usually a 3rd round pick which could turn out to be a huge steal. He is definitely under the radar for his skillset, IMO, and I could definitely see him getting significant carries this year. That said, I'm also a pretty big fan of Brown's. He is a great character kid and a definite workhorse. He did some amazing things at UConn even with no supporting cast. I agree that he may not be "special" in terms of any particular physical attribute, but he has his head on straight, has a great work ethic and a hell of a lot of heart. That, combined with more than sufficient physical tools, will take him a long way IMO - especially in an organization like the Colts. Here's the thing - the Colts - like the Giants, Pats, and Steelers - have a pretty good track record. It's not just that he was drafted in the 1st, but that he was drafted in the 1st by the Colts, and ahead of Wells.

how can you view his skill set as pretty average when he goes to the combine (where they measure skill) and he scores amazing marks, I think he was first or second in every major category....I just find it funny that YOU view his skills as average but the NFL combine states otherwise.

We're not on the same page. When I say Brown's skill set is pretty average, it has very little to do with his Combine performance. It's all about his skill set as a football player. And Brown is really overrated as far as his football talent, IMO. He's a decent prospect that landed in a nice situation. Not sure he can take advantage of it, tho. We'll see (he has a chance if things fall right).

Is this the same Brown who rushed for over 2000 yds and scored 18 TDs last year?

Projecting talent is all about figuring out how a player's skills will translate to the NFL. I see a decent prospect when I look at Brown, but he's definitely not an elite talent. And he shouldn't be viewed as a potential FF stud, IMO. Like I said, his saving grace was landing in a nice situation (if he can take advantage of it). Longterm? I don't believe he'll live up to his draft status.

Maybe the Colts put too much emphasis on combine numbers when they scout RBs because Brown reminds me of Addai in the sense that he's a workout warrior who never stood out to me on the field. The difference is that Brown was massively productive in college whereas Addai had a very mediocre career at LSU. I'm not a Brown fan, but I think he has some factors working in his favor and it's hard not to rank him as one of the top 3-4 backs in the class given the alternatives.I haven't seen much of Bernard Scott, but he appears to be a pretty big longshot. Every year we hear about some of these unheralded backs like Xavier Omon, Kenneth Darby, Ahmad Bradshaw, Ciatrick Fason, Quincy Wilson, and Antoine Womack. Most of these guys are here today and gone tomorrow. I don't see why Scott will be any different. He's small and he doesn't have the freakish athletic gifts to make up for it. The only thing I like about him is his opportunity. Benson is mediocre at best and the team cut Perry after they drafted Scott, which could indicate that they like his potential. I still think he'll be lucky to be on a pro roster 3 years from now.
