Shark Pool Board Mock Draft - Version 1 (1 Viewer)

NY Giants will take OT Mike Adams Ohio StateAdams brings some youth to an aging line. Soon the Giants will need to have replacements ready for their established linemen. Adams hand size and arm length are the size that teams look for at the tackle spots. He has shown he can get to the second level with his run blocking and has solid foot work. This was the player I targeted since getting the Giants as my team to pick. Recently looked at the OT from FSU, Zietler from Wisconsin and Glenn form Goergia. In the end Adams was the best fit to an aging line.
Things got held up. I didn't get a PM on this until this morning and I've been in meetings the last few hours. Hightower is likely who I would have picked for the Pats at 1.32.

This would be an interesting spot to see the Browns roll the dice on a Tannehill or Nick Foles.
It would be interesting but I sure hope not. By taking Sanu at 1.22 we missed out on the high end DT's in the draft. I would have much rather had Brockers, Worthy, Cox or even Upshaw at OLB which is also a fairly weak spot. That D-line had got to get better. I don't see a ton of value left at DT at this spot. Maybe Brandon Thompson from Clemson.

First choice for me would Mercilus Whitney or Andre Branch - Instant starter at DE. This would be a nice young group of D-linemen with Taylor and Sheard.

Second maybe address a weak LB crew. I like Jackson but an impact OLB would be nice. He not rated extremely high on a lot of boards but Sean Spence from Miami is the real deal and the #3 OLB in my mind.

I'd like to wait and take a look at a guy like Keenum in the 3rd.
You already have Keenum, only we call him McCoy. :boxing:

With the 2.05 The Cleveland Browns select Whitney Mercilus DE, Illinois

The D-line gets a nice addition with Whitney. Mercilus can contribute with his nation-leading sack total of 16, 9 forced fumbles and 22.5 tackles for loss last year at Illinois. He will improve a young up and coming D-line with Last years picks of Sheard and Taylor.

Will add more later to get this moving.

ETA: The Browns have two major concerns going into this draft. Lack of playmakers on offense and addressing the run defense. This team was good statistically against the pass last year but not so much against the run. Whitney will be a start on day one and will improve the D-line immediately. The addition of a second shutdown corner in Claiborne and a very good passrusher in Whitney should really improve this defense.

Also strongly considered was Sean Spence from MIA to upgrade the OLB group.

2.04 - Trumaine Johnson, CB - Montana
10/23/11 - Missoula City Police tased and arrested senior cornerback Trumaine Johnson and junior quarterback Gerald Kemp early Sunday Morning. Sgt. Colin Rose says police responded to the 1100 block of Russell around 2:40 am, for a loud party complaint, they asked attendees to quiet down, but the people were un-compliant. Rose says one of the players struck an officer in the chest, both players started grabbing the officers. When officers tried to arrest the Johnson and Kemp, they resisted and were tased. Both Johnson and Kemp faces charges of obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Both bonded out of jail, and will appear in municipal court Monday. - NBC Montana
Great.

With the 6th pick in the second round the Jacksonville Jaguars select Ryan Tannehill QB Texas A&M

Bold move by the Jags but listen to my thinking before blasting me too bad. Target was Whiley Mercilus, but when he went off the board before their pick, Jags snag Tannehill as he drops into the second round. As long as he's healthy enough to put together a pro day before the draft, there's talk of him going mid 1st, even possibly in the top 10 (Gil Brandt made this remark recently). The kid has extreme athletic ability, quick release, and can make every NFL throw. Only started one year at QB, and tends to force the ball in to coverage, but many see him as a NFL Starting QB given so time to develop. I'm sure the Jags a regretting their pick of Gabbert right now, he looked horrible his first year, and there is talk of bringing a FA QB to compete with him any way or take over completely. Tannenhill gives them the chance to 1. motivate Gabbert 2. have a back up plan on if Gabert truly is a bust and 3. won't cost them as much money, compared to a starting quality FA QB like Flynn or Orton. Tannenhill is not ready to start right away, with him being taken in the second, and with the new Rookie cap, it doesn't hurt the Jags to take the kid.

This out fo the box thinking by me, but QB is the most important position in the NFL, and there really isn't a player of value at one of their positions of need.

With the 7th pick in the second round the Washington Redskins select:

2.07 Zebrie Sanders, OT, Florida State

The Redskins need CB, WR, OL, S etc. The staff is getting a good look at Sanders this week so if they like they could pick him here if he is available. Jamaal Brown looks to be out so they need a RT badly. They should have more success in FA with S, WR and G then they will with the tackle position so hopefully they get some T help higher in the draft.

The Carolina Panthers are on the clock.

2.08 Carolina Panthers select Brandon Thompson DT, Clemson

Pass rush: Arguably his best skill due to an extraordinary burst off the snap. Explodes out of his stance, demonstrating a burst upfield to slip gaps and the lateral agility once past the line of line of scrimmage to chase down the quarterback. Inconsistent use of hands. Flashes quick hands to slap away blocks, but too often gets caught in the in the hand-fighting at the line of scrimmage, rather than quickly disengaging. Uses a swim move occasionally, though is only marginally effective with it. May be limited with this technique due to short arms. Good upper body strength and leg drive for the bull rush.

Run defense: Penetrates through gaps, often forcing running backs to elude him or the back end of the offensive lineman he's pushing before they even reach the line of scrimmage. Inconsistent in his ability to separate from blocks, however, making him more of a nuisance than a snap-to-snap terror. Good anchor to hold up at the point, though he does not possess the bulk or lower body strength to hold up to double teams. Good effort pursuing laterally. Quick feet and good balance to slide down the line and possessing the burst to slip through gaps.

Explosion: Pops off tape due to his explosive first few steps. While powerful, doesn't rock the guard/center back with his upper body strength or explode into tackles.

Strength: Good weight-room strength, which translates onto the football field in terms of his anchor. Isn't able to consistently shed blocks and makes plays in the hole. Good strength for the drag down tackle.

Tackling: Can make the impressive chest to chest bear hug tackle in the hole due to his ability to wreak havoc in the backfield. Good strength, though his marginal arm length limits his ability to grab hold of ball-carriers as they run by. Willing to lay out and shows good hand-eye coordination to trip up ball-carriers.

Intangibles: Nicknamed "Yams" because of his huge thighs, which aid in his role as a run-stuffer. Won the Strength Training Award among Clemson defensive tackles in the spring of 2010. Tied for third on the team with a 425 pound bench press. Lifted 225 pounds 30 times for Clemson coaches. A pre-Business major who earned a spot on the Honor Roll in the spring of 2010.

WR was considered here but the #5 ranked offense in the NFL is going to hope to address a compliment/replacement for Steve Smith via free agency. The Panther defense suffered the perfect storm last year. They were bad on the D-line and the secondary. The LB corps was decimated by injuries losing Jon Beason and Thomas Davis. With both guys progressing nicely in their recovery and having addressed CB in round one, the D-line gets some help. Jon Beason will pick him up at the airport.

PM sent to Kirby

Pretty dreamy start to the 2012 Draft for the Redskins. RG3 and a solid OT.

After seeing this in the 2nd, maybe Reiff in the 1st would have been a solid pick? You'd better take care of my keeper Newton, damnit! :hot: I just get a bad feeling about Dre Kirkpatrick. Mostly because he showed that he's flat out stupid since he got busted with possession just 3 months before what may be the most important day of his life. But also, Mel Kiper slams him and doesn't believe he will be a good "cover" corner from what I've read....although I take Kiper's words with a grain of salt.

2.09 - Andre Branch - DE - Clemson

If the reports about Miami switching to a 4-3 are true they will need another DE to pair up with Wake. Branch-Odrick-Starks-Wake on the line with Misi-Burnett-Dansby at linebacker doesn't look to bad in year one of the conversion.

This was a really hard couple picks for me to choose from. I like Rieff a lot and it was a really strong consideration. I think he could play LT or RT and if I had it to do over again I might go that way. You struck Gold with Newton and are one injury away from Clausen/Anderson. I tried to really look at what was the most glaring needs on this team which IMO is D-line and CB. The corners are terrible and Charles Johnson needs some help. If Dre was available I think Jerry Richardson would be hard pressed to take him. They are really big on not having character issues (Smith is enough. lol). Not sure if some of you heard but he instructed Cam not to get any tattoo's because they want him to be the face of the franchise. So a drug possession arrest a couple months before the draft might be enough to stay away from. I was just going to say that if I had my choice I would have much rather traded down out of 9. If I could have picked up a later 1st and another 2nd I would have been much happier. Not having a 3rd rnd pick is really going to hurt. My hope is that since this team uses a lot of two TE sets with Olsen and Shockey that the protection is going to be good enough. A healthy Beason/ Davis and these additions could be enough for a playoff birth.....yeah I said it...

The Buffalo Bills select Dwayne Allen TE out of CLEMSON

I will not give a big run down because I do not want to get called out for not knowing my team and hating my team again by morons.

I was between all 3 TEs at the top whom I like all of them quite a bit. I went with Allen as he seems to be very athletic and fits the bill as a former basketball player. I had trouble debating between Fleener, Charles, and Allen but ended up going with Allen.

Scott Chandler is a FA and I think they may not resign him and even if they do they need a better pass catching more atheletic TE to spread the field a little bit.

Exactly this is insurance, Gabbert works out you have a Cheap QB to develop and trade ala Schaub/Kolb. Gabbert doesn't work out you have a young kid waiting who may work out.

We're moving pretty well. I'm going to grab some lunch and if Stinkin Ref hasn't been around to pick by the time I get back, we'll make a consensus pick.

I like the thought process and have looked a bit at Mercilus, he broke out of no-where last year so he's a fast-rising pass rusher. Those fast-riser pass rusher guys have the potential to shoot up boards.NFL Network’s Mike Mayock has Mercilus listed as his third best DE over-all from this draft but Todd McShay gave an interview yesterday to Cleveland Browns Daily talking about the Senior Bowl guys where he tells who he feels are his top-three pass rushing DEs from the Senior Bowl and he doesn't list Mercilus but Whitney came out early and isn't elligble for the game so we don't know his thoughts on Mercilus.

McShay breaks down draft class

... McShay, with ESPN since 2006, spoke with Cleveland Browns Daily, the team’s official radio show, about the 2012 NFL Draft ...

... McShay talked about the pass-rushing defensive ends at the 2012 Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala. and listed three, North Carolina’s Quinton Coples, South Carolina’s Melvin Ingram and Courtney Upshaw of Alabama, as having the most potential to succeed at the NFL level...
McShay did not mention Mercilus but the article is brief however NFL Network’s Mike Mayock does in his top-five list that came out yesterday.Draft 2012: Mayock's Top Fives

Defensive Ends

1. Quinton Coples, North Carolina

2. Melvin Ingram, South Carolina

3. Whitney Mercilus*, Illinois

4. Nick Perry*, USC

5. (tie) Chandler Jones*, Syracuse

Andre Branch, Clemson

Notes: Coples measured in at an impressive 6-foot-6 and 281 pounds during Monday's Senior Bowl weigh-in and was the nation's highest rated senior entering the last college season. His production dipped a bit in 2011, however, and NFL scouts were concerned that Coples played "not to get hurt." Ingram is a freak athlete with rare versatility, capable of playing defensive end, tackle, and perhaps even outside linebacker in a 3-4. Draftniks are divided on Mercilus, who led the NCAA in sacks (16) and forced fumbles (9) before declaring for the draft on January 3.
RDE is a big issue on the defense and if Jabaal Sheard had backside pressure I think his numbers would improve.I am a bit unsure of Mercilus' run defense from the little bit of video I've been able to find on him. Also I am a big proponent of getting a speed-edge rusher in the pass rush mix as well. Marcus Bernard may be 'that guy' if he is able to make it back from his crazy car crash and re-claim his roster spot. I feel he still hasn't been tapped and that he could turn into something special but Mercilus seems like a fine pick. :banned:

1.26. Houston Texans - Alshon Jeffery, WR - South CarolinaWould be a HUGE upgrade to the #2 spot with the potiential to fit the bill as a #1 when AJ retires/moves on.
Ya know you guys manage to get to me during the two hours a day that I am not by a computer.
Not too late to change it if you want someone else.
Keep it moving. i will write him up later.
Alshon Jeffrey is a big physically WR for is good at jump balls and appears to get deep without good short area quickness. Was more production in 2010 than 2011. He might be too big as there were these than flattery pictures which emerged during the off-season. Still seems to have natural ball skills. From the Texans perspective this season finally highlighted the lack of quality behind Andre Johnson. WR seems to be the largest short term need. Overall, the Texans seem to draft guys with better size/speed ratios than Jeffrey (I think has, but it will be interesting to see how the team approaches solving WR.

Marcus Bernard may be 'that guy' if he is able to make it back from his crazy car crash and re-claim his roster spot. I feel he still hasn't been tapped and that he could turn into something special but Mercilus seems like a fine pick. :banned:
This was one of my concerns as well. He seemed to get stood up pretty easily. I was really surprised/impressed with Sheard and Taylor and wanted to see them get some help. I am always a little hesitant of these guys that have one big season and come out. One of two things happens....they catch lightning in a bottle and cash in, or the coaching finally paid off and they figured it out. I am hoping for the latter. Best case Bernard recovers and we get to rotate in the fresh guy every couple series to keep the pressure dialed up.

The Buffalo Bills select Dwayne Allen TE out of CLEMSONI will not give a big run down because I do not want to get called out for not knowing my team and hating my team again by morons.
Being a Bills fan dont you feel like this is very unlikely for them to draft a TE at this spot? In this offence I dont think they value TEs. I think Chandler will be cheap and exactly what they are looking for. They said the same thing in the draft the last couple of years about the Bills needing a TE and I agreed but they passed. This year they actually got decent production out of a TE, so if they didnt when they really struggled at the position I just dont really see it happening now. But then again maybe they are taking notes from NE and realizing the mismatch you can create with good TEs and are changing their philosophy. Im just going off of past drafts I guess...

Okay. So the Chefs...
I think they would consider RB. Some "experts" have them drafting Richardson in the 1st.
I agree, with Charles coming off injury and Jones being old you have to figure they go running back. The only reason I could see them passing is if they LOVE someone at this pick that isnt RB, or there is a RB in the later rounds that they think can be a big role player for them.

What about a power runner, maybe Polk from WaSt?

:goodposting: I was just about to mention him, I think he is a great fit and compliment to Charles.
