I might be wrong but between Grant, Jackson and Moreno the Packers would be investing a hell of a lot of $$$$ in running backs.
Grant got a 4 year, heavily incentive based, 20 million contract. Jackson is on his rookie contract and he's making a pittance by NFL standards. This would not be that bad for them financially.Blackjacks said:I might be wrong but between Grant, Jackson and Moreno the Packers would be investing a hell of a lot of $$$$ in running backs.

Another good spot to trade down from, with Everette Brown, Raji and Jenkins available. If "stuck" drafting at #9 they all look like good additions to GB's new 3-4 defense. When we began this draft I was sure I wanted Jenkins.
But I remember that in the games last year where the Packers were in control, they wanted to and did run more - the times when Grant had 25, 30, or even more carries. Brandon Jackson can make plays on the outside and in the passing game but isn't a great secondary runner. The team's RB scouting (beyond Grant) looks iffy, with Morency, Herron, Wynn etc. not finding homes elsewhere once off GB's roster.
Moreno is fast, strong, has good hands, and is absolutely a 1st round RB. There is (supposedly) low demand for the position in this year's first round, but just means you can find a good one later than usual. I looked at last year's mock linked in the first post and noticed that someone took Chris Johnson in the 2nd round for the Packers - a guy they didn't "need" but who would have certainly improved the offense. Same for Felix Jones in Dallas last season. There are 3-4 defenders available through the 2nd and 3rd rounds: the Packers choose to start with the draft's best RB.![]()
I didn't know the details of Grant's contract. I knew Jackson was a second round pick and I thought he made desent moneyA top tn rb is making major bucks.I would think they would be in the top five in this scenario for paying thier rb's in the NFL.Grant got a 4 year, heavily incentive based, 20 million contract. I think I could guarantee this pickIm here, give me a minute.I had left a couple picks with Andy in case I took too long. Hopefully it hasnt been too long for anyone.
My question would be, if you decide to go for a RB at #9, why Moreno over Wells?Chicago Hooligan said:I think I've only seen one mock with Moreno in the Top 10, so I know this is a surprise pick. And of course I welcome criticism. The smart/safe pick is probably Jenkins. He can attack the line of scrimmage on running plays and play zone, both weaknesses for Al Harris. But I liked Tramon Williams filling in for Harris last year, and Jenkins may be more beneficial to a team who can play him at free safety. Another underachieving 1st round pick on D for the Packers would be a disaster.
I'm not a scouting maven, I just read about both and decided on Moreno. He sounded like a better receiving option and wasn't injured. You think Wells is better, or at least better for GB?My question would be, if you decide to go for a RB at #9, why Moreno over Wells?
I can't answer to top 5 but I can tell you that Grant/Jackson made just under 6 million this year while Fargas/McFadden made over 10 million this year for the Raiders.I didn't know the details of Grant's contract. no i'd agree with you. If GB is going to take a RB they won't take Beanie. Beanie is like Grant in the fact that neither of them can catch. If GB took a RB i'd think they want someone who can do it all, run up the gut and catch out of the backfield.I'm not a scouting maven, I just read about both and decided on Moreno. If this happened on draft day I gotta believe someone would be fired over night.scrumptrulescent said:I've got to say, as a Packer fan, I'm definitely surprised by this.Chicago Hooligan said:With the 9th pick in the first round, the Green Bay Packers select:

For certain teams I'd match different rb's. If both were there and GB wanted to go rb I'd match Moreno with GB over Wells.I'm not a scouting maven, I just read about both and decided on Moreno. I'm not saying I like one over the other, I just wanted to hear your reasoning. If they were to go with Moreno I'd assume they've given up on Brandon Jackson. If they were to take Wells I'd assume they don't like Grant.I'm not a scouting maven, I just read about both and decided on Moreno. He sounded like a better receiving option and wasn't injured. Good thing I'm not a professional making sweet picks like Vernon Gholston, huh.If this happened on draft day I gotta believe someone would be fired over night.

LOL agreed. Sorry to bust on your pick, but the Pack were ranked 26th against the run in a division with ADP. I cant believe they would pass on the best DT available. However for this process it makes the draft much more interesting.Good thing I'm not a professional making sweet picks like Vernon Gholston, huh.If this happened on draft day I gotta believe someone would be fired over night.![]()

Nice selection. Jenkins or Brown I would have considered equally nice, but hard to go wrong building from the inside. The San Francisco 49ers have many needs.
Any 5 star prospect could be of use at various positions. Reaching is not what is needed... just going based on needs is not what is needed. It has to be "as sure" as possible. And while I think that several players need more investigation and could warrant this pick (Im personally high on Sanchez) after the combine on draft day. Though several others could grade out incredibly high to make this an easy "talent" pick (Jenkins, Maclin, etc).
One player fits a big need and has the talent, experience and fit for this club...
With the 10th Pick theSan Francisco 49ers select:
BJ RAJI DT Boston College.
With a glaring need in the center of the 49ers defensive line, BJ Raji not only fills it, but stuffs it. Nearly every 3-4 that plays dominantly has a nose tackle that dictates the flow of things around him. CHamption, JWilliams, HNgata, VWilfork, SRodgers, PWilliams (When he played the 3-4), KJenjkins.
An almost perfect fit to place in front of Patrick Willis and besides Justin Smith. Keeping Willis clean for the next decade.
6'-1" 323 lbs
Top flight strength.
Can play the 2 gap.
Handles blockers, and the point of attack.
A senior who was a 3 year starter.
Known to be mean and aggressive.
Agile and quick for his size, with a good 2 step burst.
His weakness may be conditioning - but have you sean the typical DT?
He has been as heavy as 350 pounds reportedly, so he could play bigger in couple years.
Might never be a brain surgeon.
I agree somewhat with Hooligan when it comes to Raji. Raji did shoot up the charts based on the Senior Bowl practices. Meanwhile, his counterpart Ron Brace is the same size and could slip into the 3rd round. As a Pack fan, I wouldn't have taken Raji at #9 either. I don't think he's going to be the impact player worthy of a top 10 pick, but I'm wrong a lot.LOL agreed. I thought Sanchez was a lock here. However I do think SF is trying to build there team around there defense and Raji is a stud. The San Francisco 49ers have many needs.

I don't know, I had Raji ranked #9 overall before the Senior Bowl. But I do agree that there will be very good DT prospects to be had later.Admittedly I don't watch tons of college football, but I am leery of guys like Raji who suddenly "shoot up draft boards." He may become a more convincing pick after the combine. Also, Boston College DT Ron Brace is a guy GB has talked to (but... maybe they talked to him about Raji!) and Brace might be there in the 3rd round.
Seems like a pretty good pick for Buffalo. Does Brown have the frame to pack on 15-20 pounds and not lose the speed? Speed is his biggest asset I believe. With the 11th pick in the 2009 NFL draftThe Buffalo Bills select: Everette Brown, DE - Florida State
Many mocks have the Bills taking Pettigrew here, but i am highly opposed to that. There's really no reason to take a TE so high in the 1st round, especially one who is not a gamechanger, and when you have other major holes to more important positions.
Need: The Bills were tied for 4th last in sacks on defense, with no individual player getting more than 4 sacks on the season (although Schobel was injured for the majority of the season). The Kelsay/Denney defensive end combo scares no one. And with Schobel turning 32 by week 1 of the 2009 season, the Bills definitely need some talented youth in the defensive end position.
Everette Brown: Personally i like Brown a little bit more than Orakpo, though Orakpo has the higher upside. Brown has a repertoire of moves that Orakpo does not currently possess. Brown has a VERY good spin move and good strength that he uses for inside stunts, and he has an excellent inital burst of the line, great speed, and good lean for generating pressure around the corner. At times he tries to jump the count, to varying success. He always keeps his eyes on the ball, and often times blows plays up in the backfield, and play actions don't fool him.
His major weakness has to do with size. He's 6'4 252, and will need to put on at least 10 pounds, preferably 15-20 pounds to start as a 4-3 DE, which is what the Bills will ask him to do. He has the frame to do it, so i don't think it will be a major problem. Because of his lack of width, his run defense is questionable. He shows excellent pursuit and can shed blockers to get in the hole, but at times can be isolated out of the play.
Conclusion: Overall i think its a perfect value meets need pick. Though when the actual draft comes around i'm not 100% sure that Brown will be there at #11, though the Bills will just be hoping that one of the top defensive lineman: Raji, Orakpo, Brown will still be there.
According to NFL Draft Scout, he can. FWIW. I think he is 250 right now. A young guy getting to 260+ doesn't seem like much of a stretch. I like this pick.Seems like a pretty good pick for Buffalo. With the 12th pick of the draft, the Denver Broncos select Rey Maualuga, LB USC
Coming into the draft, I had Raji, Everett Brown and Maualuga tabbed as possible picks with Orakpo and Curry being longshots to last this long.
This pick was easy given the 49ers and Bills selections.
Denver needs help on defense at just about every position.
Maualuga is a tenacious hitter who will bring attitude and toughness to a defense that has been lacking both since Al Wilson left. Maualuga is a big body who IMO is the best fit for a 3-4 MLB in the draft. He will be able to come in and make an instant impact. With the news that DJ Williams might play inside or outside in the 3-4, it gives Denver a little versatility at the LB position. Maualuga reminds me a lot of a younger Junior Seau and may be a player they can build their defense around for years to come. He can make some mental mistakes at times but he's as big a playmaker as they come at MLB and there were times throughout his college career where he seemed to get in a zone and take over (see last year's Rose Bowl vs. Illinois). He has a knack for the big hit and may be able to step up as a vocal leader for a defense that needs all the help it can get. I think he will be the latest in a long line of stud LBs who hail from Southern Cal.
I'll send a PM to the Redskin owner.
I had already made up my mind that I was going to argue against you if you selected anyone else. Maualuga is a great fit for Denver moving forward in the 3-4 and gives them an instant leader in the middle. Now go get him a NT to keep him clean in round 2.
Everette BrownThere's a picture of him. To me he doesn't looked very toned at all, if anything he looks a little chubby in the stomach. I think he has the frame to put on 15-20 pounds, with the majority of that being muscle.Seems like a pretty good pick for Buffalo. Does Brown have the frame to pack on 15-20 pounds and not lose the speed? Speed is his biggest asset I believe.
If the draft were to fall this way, I think San Diego might try to trade up and take Rey ahead of Denver.I had already made up my mind that I was going to argue against you if you selected anyone else. I think so. Maybe a SD homer can chime in but I'm under the impression that one of the Chargers' biggest needs this offseason is an impact MLB.Is Rey really viewed as that much of a can't miss ILB in the 3-4?If the draft were to fall this way, I think San Diego might try to trade up and take Rey ahead of Denver.I had already made up my mind that I was going to argue against you if you selected anyone else. Substitute Jenkins for Knowshon and I nailed the first 12 picks of this mock 2 weeks ago.I don't know, I had Raji ranked #9 overall before the Senior Bowl. As we appraoch, you or any other Texans fan can PM ideas. does not mean I will follow, but love to hear what you are thinking.San Diego would have a hard time trading up with no 2nd rounder though.
Would that be Malcom Jenkins? If this was the real draft I bet the Saints War Room would be freaking out right now. A bunch of grown men screaming and praying that the Redskins don't take their guy.
I think every team left in the 1st round except the Eagles would be on the phone to the 'Skins right now too, trying to get ahead of NO.Would that be Malcom Jenkins? If this was the real draft I bet the Saints War Room would be freaking out right now. The Packers have 4 players on their roster who can play the NT in the 3-4. Pickett, Cole, Jolly (if not in Jail) and Harrell. And while I think Raji is more than a workout warrior, I don't have a problem with them passing on him.Passing on Malcolm Jenkins is a bigger suprise, because the Packers need to replace both Woodson and Harris in the next 2 years. Williams looked good, but we still need another starter. I am not sold on Jenkins however, so I don't mind passing on him either.Wow, that pick certainly threw me for a loop. I thought Raji was a lock.Chicago Hooligan said:With the 9th pick in the first round, the Green Bay Packers select:

Sorry Saints!!!
Great value pick.
