Shark Pool Mock Draft - V2.0. 3 rounds! (1 Viewer)

- Surprised to see that it's DRC that CC thinks the Pats will pick. Not surprised it's a corner.- I'm not sure that offensive line is the concern most think it is for the Ravens. No denying that it's a Newsome type pick though.- Buffalo isn't a destination I've heard Harvey going to, but I can see it.
1. Who I think they should take, not who I think they will take. It's how I mock. Guessing who I think they will take is a proven folly. Besides, when I originally claimed the corners were overrated, it was McKelvin's high ranking making me feel that way. I've seen a ton of Troy the last two seasons. Leodis is good, but he isn't all that and has some obvious flaws for a CB1. From the sounds of it, Cromartie is pretty flawless. 2. Baltimore can address needs later but top 10 picks should be about talent first with a lesser concern for need. They have admitted that OL is a big concern regardless of having Gaither in the weeds. Terry is a disappointment, Ogden is uncertain to continue, and they jneed to move the football better. Albert can dominate at guard with Grubbs or swing out to either edge if needed. Tons of value in this kid.3. That's sort of the point of a mock draft. Let's keep it real, at least defensible, and shake things up a little, look at different angles. I do think Albert is a high riser right now. I do think it sounds like Cromartie has the highest grade among corners.

1. Miami (Gatorman) - Chris Long

2. St. Louis (Blackjacks) - Jake Long

3. Atlanta (Andy Dufresne) - Glenn Dorsey

4. Oakland (John Madden's Lunchbox) - Vernon Gholston

5. Kansas City (RBM) -- Matt Ryan

6. New York Jets (KellysHeroes) -- Darren McFadden

7. New England (Chaos Commish) - Dominique Rogers-Cromartie, CB

8. Baltimore (Chaos Commish) - Branden Albert, OL

9. Cincinnati (yellowdog)- Sedrick Ellis - DT - USC

10. New Orleans (Kirby)- Leodis McKelvin - CB Troy

11. Buffalo (Getinthemix) - Derrick Harvey - DE Florida

12. Denver (Almas_4th_child) - Ryan Clady - LT Boise State

13. Carolina (travdogg)- Chris Williams - OT Vanderbilt

14. Chicago (Deranged Hermit)- Jeff Otah OT Pitt

15. Detroit (FUBAR) - Rashard Mendenhall RB, Illinois

Not the pick I would take, but this is Matt Millen. They need a RB, and while I'd wait to round 2, Mendenhall should be a workhorse for years.

16. Arizona (Getinthemix)

17. Minnesota (footballman_696969)

18. Houston (coolnerd)

19. Philadelphia (Jeff Pasquino)

26. Jacksonville (Mr. Brownstone)

27. San Diego (bicycle_seat_sniffer)

29. San Francisco (Andy Dufresne)

30. Green Bay (Almas_4th_child)

31. New York Giants (footballman_696969)
I think Otah is the right pick for the Bears. His postseason hasn't been all that great, but that's due to his recovering from a high ankle sprain suffered late in the season. I agree that he fits the Bears scheme.FUBAR doesn't like the Lions taking Mendenhall. I do. I can't see them rolling with Tatum Bell and Calhoun as their primary backs. If he's there, he almost HAS to be the pick.
Otah was clearly the pick for Chicago here. I'm a big believer in not believing the hype (good or bad) and just going with what I see on the field. From the games I saw Otah play, he's a beast. As for Mendenhall, I think Andy is right, they have to take him if he's there. Yes, they have other holes, but they have to establish a running game or Kitna (or whoever plays QB) is going to get killed behind that line. I think they can get a pretty good OL guy in the second round. Someone always drops farther than they should....

Clady is the steal of the draft so far.
The Pats and Ravens both had him as the #4 OL on their boards. :coffee:
Can you expound on your thinking with the Ravens pick. I think with Gaither, they have their LT of the future. Would the Ravens take a guard that high?
I struggle to understand how the Ravens get a pass on left tackle because they have LT of the future in Gaither - who, I understand, is pretty raw. The Broncos took Harris from Notre Dame last year to be their LT of the future. So now they have Harris and Pears who can play left tackle. We could use a candidate for right tackle, though, and if they stay at 1.12 and go offensive line I'm hoping it will be Otah or Albert to play right tackle (or guard and move Kuper to RT).

If the Lions don't take a RB in the first, I'd look for them to reach for someone like Matt Forte or Ray Rice in the second just to make sure they get the bigger back they need. Either one of those guys wouldn't be a bad pick either.

Isn't a rookie, by definition, going to be more raw than Gaither?

Harris didn't play that great when given the opportunity, but he was a rookie. Pears sucks though.

Why not strengthen the line then and take a RB in the 2nd/3rd/4th? :hophead: It is definitely a fit for Millen's logic in drafts. "We need a strong rushing game. Get a better RB". Flawed thinking imo.

All depends on where you feel the dropoff is. I think that while guys like Forte, Rice, Johnson, Charles, etc. are fine backs, Mendenhall is more prototypical and more likely to start right away. The o-linemen at this spot in the draft, however, aren't that much better than 2nd round guys like Nicks, Greco, etc.

Looking for more on Albert I find this this morning at Scott Wright's site:
There is no question that Jake Long is the cream of the crop when it comes to offensive linemen in this draft but Branden Albert has seen his stock soar recently and he is making a serious run at the Top 10 overall. An All-American guard in college, Albert came out after his junior season and while he was still somewhat of an unknown to most casual observers just a few months ago he is now one of the hottest prospects in this draft. The catalyst behind his meteoric rise has been his ability to potentially kick outside to left tackle, which he did for a couple of games in '07 when Eugene Monroe was hurt, and lately more and more teams are becoming convinced that he will be able to handle that transition full-time at the next level. Albert is now firmly in the Top 15 overall and he could very well wind up being the second offensive lineman off the board on Draft Day.
We'll see where he finally goes, but at least this supported my Ravens reach.

Uh, I think I already addressed that. I believe they can get a MUCH better OL guy in the second than they can get at RB. Think of it as Value based Drafting: Take the player that has the steeper dropoff first, than the guy at the deeper position next. I really think you are underestimating how deep this draft is in regards to O-line players.

I do think it sounds like Cromartie has the highest grade among corners.
Maybe. Baltimore has shown a LOT of interest in McKelvin. It will definitely say a lot for DRC's ceiling if he's CB1 even though his tape at Tenn St is less than impressive.
I know this, but I had to make this interesting enough to get another look. I opnely admit to knowing little about Cromartie. The Ravens are looking at a few corners they can add later also. McKelvin, to me, is a great return guy in part because he shies away from contact. This is not a physical corner. I know McAlister and Rolle aren't physical either, but that's not the point in a CB1. Another thing that bothered me about McKelvin last year was his ball skills, which seemed poor or unlucky to me. He should have had more picks and he played it shootouts where the ball was constantly in the air. Ike Taylor without the physical nature. Cromartie sounds like family to me.

While some people would want Quentin Groves here, I opt for a CB which will help facillitate moving Antrel Rolle to FS, where I think he has a chance to star. This pick improves two positions at once. I really think they go CB here if Jenkins is available. I wanted to go with the pot head here, but think he is falling due to that.

I love the Jenkins pick to Arizona. They've moved Rolle to FS so there's a definite need there. The Vikings and Texans guys will be back later today to comment. I'm okay with Merling to the Vikes even with the hernia issue. He's not the elite pass rusher the Vikes need, but then there aren't any of them left at this point in the draft.

This is the second mock that I've seen someone have the Texans taking Keith Rivers. Do they have their eye on him? I think he'd be an excellent choice as the Texans are slowly building what could be a dominant defense. The o-line is still a wreck though.

I just found out that I have to take an emergency trip for work and will be leaving shortly. Can anyone pick up the Bills and Cards?

I apologize, this just came out of nowhere.

I might be. I know more about the 2nd tier RBs and top OL than the 2nd tier OL. IMHO, Forte or Jones should be there in the 2nd, and I like them almost as much as Mendenhall. I took Mendenhall (thank you Andy) because it's what I think Millen will do - maybe that's actually the smart move?

The Eagles are torn.

Andy Reid is sitting on Joe Banner right now, as they "discuss" the merits of two players atop their board.

It was more a knock on Millen then your draft choice. I understand that there may not be OL talent that is worthy at this draft spot but the point is this would probably be Millen's pick even if there was. Personally, I think they should either go OL or DL in the 1st. There may not have been value OL at this point in the draft but there is DL value.

It doesn't matter to me. I just asked because I think it's possible to have too many teams in a draft. Too many choices coming from one brain.

Given that no huge values at O-Line or DT or DB fell, and some others will be there later, the guess here is the #1 WR on their Draft Board. That's anyone's guess. I'll go with:

Limas Sweed, WR, Texas
Any thoughts or comments on this pick?Wasn't easy at all.

Eagles need a WR, but is it their top need and best value here? Also, why Sweed over Kelly or some others? In some ways, I like the idea of a Kevin Curtis and Devin Thomas (Kevin and Devin) combo better.

Well I am a huge fan of James Hardy, but with 0 WR's taken I would hope the Eagles would have waited till the 2nd to grab one and taken Phillips here.

With Washington and Dallas picking next, I wonder if this is a start of a WR run?

Sweed was a surprise, Kelly seems to be so far ahead of him in the general consensus, Jackson too.

You may be right with this one. I didn't see Phillips was available. That's probably a better pick.ETA - I don't know about Hardy and who he's faced. Not sold on his ability. I wanted to go wait for WR until Round 2.

It's totally a need but we know how averse Andy is to using high picks on WRs. I personally would have taken Jackson because he's a big-time returner also.

Tampa sure does seem to take a WR in every mock draft I've seen. Kelly is a great value at pick 20, but I think they could look to improve their defense in the 1st with all the WR depth in this draft, especially if only 1 WR is off the board when they pick.

I would figure that if you take a receiver, Jackson or Devin would also be a boon to the special teams. I don't really follow the Eagles but I thought that's been a sticking point the last few years.

His size scares me some. Sure there's Steve Smith, but how many little guys are true #1 WRs? Especially in a physical division. Everyone knows that the Eagles struggle with press coverage. You need a big WR who can get separation. I don't see that from DJax 2.As for a returner, I'm thinking a later pick will fill that void. Not sure who.

Personally I'd like to see a move to get McKelvin or Cromartie.

Agreed on Hardy, but I'm not going to split hairs as to which WR they'd take here. We all have our favorites. That being said, I think they would strongly look at Kenny Phillips here if the draft fell the way it has so far. Phillips fills a huge need with Dawkins quickly coming up on the twilight of his carreer.

I was looking to upgrade defense but I was surprised Kelly was still there. I thought it was too soon for Lawrence Jackson or Kentwan Balmer and there is good depth at CB to pick one later.
