One of the NFL's most effective third-down tailbacks, and likely to get more overall "touches" in the Martz-designed offense, Bryson reached agreement on a new three-year contract worth $4.5 million. The deal includes a $1.5 million signing bonus.

His role almost certainly will not change in 2006 but his playing time could actually be expanded.

Makes sense to me - Bryson's receiving skills get him on the field more in Martz'z wide open offense...Thoughts?

Pro Football Talk has hinted that Len's been doing this kind of thing for years -- I think all reporters do to a certain extent, but they single him out. If Len P. broke the story, then I would think you'd have to think he's at least throwing Bryson a little bone in repayment for getting the news first.

I think that at some point in the off-season every team has some version of the back-up will get more carries/need to rest the starter more story. When the games start, I believe that only about 2 of these things actually come into being, barring some version of injury concern.

Maybe Im just naive, but I feel like this jives with Martz not giving any RB more than 260 or so carries during his regime at St. Louis. The excitement about Kevin Jones was mainly based on his stretch in late 04 when he was getting over 20 carries a game (on average) and reeling off games of at least 100 total yards.

I don't see how that happens with Martz and Bryson...

I would say there is some merit to what Len is saying. Martz' offense will very different from Mooch's.I think we'll see a lot of Bryson between the 20's & KJ in the red zone.

Using Bryson in the passing game "plenty" is not a non-story to KJ owners, who would like KJ to be used plenty in the passing game. For those questioning Len P's logic is suggesting Bryson;s role, what other explanation do you have for Bryson getting a multi-year deal with a $1.5M signing bonus? The aditional question in my mind is whether Pinner is still in the rotation. I'd thought the Lion front office was high on him also?

I think this was the Lions just securing their backup because of KJ's nagging injuries. I just wonder for all those questioning Martz and how he will use his rbs, will he actually be calling the plays or will it be Marinelli? Marinelli said he wanted to run a more ball control offense, but then hires Martz. This answer to this question will be key to how they use their rbs.

because its the offseason and he needs to have some story to write for espn.com?I distictly remember Len being the 1 guy who constantly bashed Shanahan for signing Cleveland's entire defensive line in 2005...

There was actually a lot more interest in Bryson by other teams than there was in Travis Henry.

Chester Taylor got signed last year for twice that amount. I think Kevin Faulk is in the ballpark too. Nothing unusual about $1.5m/yr for a backup/third-down RB.

CTaylor deal was unique. He was a match from a Browns offer. Balt. was unsure that Lewis would be back 100% and had to sign him to insure a solid backfield.RB's are going to be cheap this year. New year, new market. I'd say that 1.5 mil is a healthy salary and it does make a statement.

Bryson seems to get dinged up quite a bit in his own right for a guy who only averages a handful of touches per game.

Seems pretty in line with the types of deals that Dominic Rhodes and Derrick Blaylock got last year. Backup money.

he's OK for a 3rd down back I guess. He gets what 30-40 catches and has a 5 yard average? Not my kind of 3rd down back but I suppose he's OK sure.He's never really been able to grab a featured back role.

This is like a FBG tradition dating back to old yeller. Bunch of guys say how he'll make a big impact and....he doesn't. First year in Buf, first in Detroit he was in a RBBC and ran for 600 yards. Woohoo! He averages close to one TD a year and.....we do this every year

bryson is much better then the others at picking up blocks in the backfield . not a usefull ff skill but important on the real field .

Kevin Jones needs to get better at blocking and catching. Until he does then Shawn Bryson will continue to have a fairly significant role on the Lions as the third down back.

Does it hurt Jones? Absolutely, but if Jones improves in those two areas with some tutelage from Martz & Co. then he could still pick up some of those snaps.

Injury prone? C'mon. Every NFL player fits that bill. He was certainly slowed by injuries last year, but I've seen nothing to heap him into the same pile as backs who might fit the often mis-used "injury prone" label. When I think of injury prone I think of RBs at or over 30 yrs old who have already suffered a significant injury, most notably a torn ACL.

The ceiling is still very high for Jones. If the Lions fix their offensive line then Jones could be a very solid back. Until they fix their C, LG and RT positions I think Jones will be fighting an uphill battle.

Does Bryson really qualify as depth? What team in the league would want this guy as their featured RB if their top guy went down? Outside of the Lions of course...

It's neutral to negative news. We have no idea how Martz will use KJ, but clearly Bryson will be in the mix in some capacity. At best, it's as a 3rd down back. At worst, RBBC. My guess is that it will fall somewhere in between.
