Shawn Nelson (1 Viewer)

Shawn Nelson will be back after Week 4 from his suspension. What's his potential as the TE for Buffalo, especially in dynasty?
As I just posted in another thread, no WR/TE in BUF has any promise until they bench that coward Edwards. Last week on 3rd and 12 he threw a 2 yard pass to Evans. Typical stuff, plays the game in fear. They need a QB who will open up the offense and take some real chances. That guy probably is not on the roster this year and they'll draft a high 1st round QB in 2011. Until they have that guy it's hard to know what Nelson's real potential is.

Next to nothing this season. Beyond that will be largely up to him.
I'm no Buffalo homer, but it seems that while the guy has a lot of athletic ability, his maturity level is questionable. He didn't seem to endear himself to the coaches and was listed as a back-up all through camp. Then his suspension came for failing a drug test. I was a Shawn Nelson dynasty league owner and was rooting for him, but I cut bait with him this preseason because I decided not to waste a valuable roster spot on an immature guy on a crappy offense. Will it surprise me if the guy figures it out and goes for 800 yds next year? No, but I'm not holding my breath. There are plenty of other TE prospects out there that I much rather take a chance on.

He's an excellent receiver & a matchup nightmare. He was a horrible blocker when drafted (reason he was a 4th rounder), and has improved a lot, but still not good enough to be an every-down TE yet. He probably would've been the starting TE by default, if not for the suspension. For this year, he's very limited by poor QB play & poor O-line needing TE help most of the time. Not much 2010 value.

For next year & beyond, definite potential. With a decent QB (not on Buffalo's current roster) & another year of experience, he could become a 50+ catch TE.
