Top stories | Rumors | Video | Photos San Diego's three-time Pro Bowl linebacker has elected to have season-surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee, FOXSports.com has learned. Several Chargers players have said that their Pro Bowl teammate has informed them of the decision.

Several calls left for Merriman have not yet been returned.

Merriman had reportedly been told by four different doctors that reconstructive surgery would be needed. Instead, the fourth-year All-Pro opted to play in Sunday's opener against the Panthers in order to test the knee.

Immediately after Sunday's game, Merriman told FOXSports.com the knee was pretty sore, but otherwise felt OK. He gave no indication at that time that he would elect to go this route.

But apparently, the knee did not pass Merriman's test.

The Merriman news comes one day after the announcement that Patriots quarterback Tom Brady's season is over after he was injured in a Week 1 game against the Chiefs.

I wonder if this will be a step back for the Chargers Def? Merriman didn't do much the first game as he was limited with his knee problem. Will his replacement be as effective or better? We'll just have to wait and see.

What do you know, I guess they weren't talking out the side of their....

Safe to say that having four expert medical opinions all agree really does mean something. :blackdot:

This just sounds weird and just makes me think that there are other factors in play here. He had to know that the knee wouldn't hold up. I mean, how many Dr's need to tell you something before you believe it.

Does anyone know the contractual/CBA impacts of playing 1 game. Things like counting this year towards him being a veteran or F.A., guaranteeing future portions of his contract, pension implications, etc?

I just don't buy it that he was "playing for the team" because it was "their year" and risk his career over it.

This is the best thing for Merriman AND the Chargers. If he's not going to be an impact player for you anyway - get him surgery and get him healthy.

Wow. I had no idea Glazer was a surgeon too. That guys is full of surprises.

I think the bottom line was, he just really, really wanted to play this year and thought he could be effective even with the injury. It was obvious watching him on Sunday that he was far removed from being 100% effective, and that is what led to this decision today (well that and all the pain probably). He wanted to see if he could make it work without surgery and it took playing in an actual game for him to realize he can't. Some people are stubborn, I'm just glad he's calling it now before he does more damage to himself.

I have to say that I'm glad Merriman's getting the surgery. Much as I'd like to see him out there on defense, it's much better for him to get healthy rather than risk ending his career.

My question still is how does he have pain in the knee at the end of last season, have surgery on the knee in the offseason and never have an MRI on the knee that shows that the ligaments are torn. If they catch this is Feb he's healthy for the start of this season. I just cant believe that two torn ligaments were missed for that long into the preseason.

The team doctors knew about both ligaments being torn and recommended he have surgery to repair them back in January. He declined to have the surgery then. He started looking for second opinions last month because he was experiencing more pain than he expected when he tried to play.

I wonder if there was some clause in his contract for being on the active roster, play time, etc which swayed his decision to play one game

Well thats even more awful. I can somewhat understand his initial desire to play this season, but if he would have had the surgery in Jan/Feb, he would have been ready or very close to ready at the start of this season. The way the story has been out there it made it seem as if he only knew in August that both were torn.
