Really?Wasn't this one of the more predictable events of the early season?
Never underestimate the power of meatheads. NEVER.This just sounds weird and just makes me think that there are other factors in play here. He had to know that the knee wouldn't hold up. I mean, how many Dr's need to tell you something before you believe it. Does anyone know the contractual/CBA impacts of playing 1 game. Things like counting this year towards him being a veteran or F.A., guaranteeing future portions of his contract, pension implications, etc?I just don't buy it that he was "playing for the team" because it was "their year" and risk his career over it.
Wow. I had no idea Glazer was a surgeon too. That guys is full of surprises.Merriman will have season-ending surgeryby Jay Glazer
Jay Glazer is a Senior NFL Writer for FOXSports.com on MSN and also appears every week on FOX NFL Sunday as the network's NFL Insider.
I think the bottom line was, he just really, really wanted to play this year and thought he could be effective even with the injury. It was obvious watching him on Sunday that he was far removed from being 100% effective, and that is what led to this decision today (well that and all the pain probably). He wanted to see if he could make it work without surgery and it took playing in an actual game for him to realize he can't. Some people are stubborn, I'm just glad he's calling it now before he does more damage to himself. This just sounds weird and just makes me think that there are other factors in play here. The team doctors knew about both ligaments being torn and recommended he have surgery to repair them back in January. He declined to have the surgery then. He started looking for second opinions last month because he was experiencing more pain than he expected when he tried to play.My question still is how does he have pain in the knee at the end of last season, have surgery on the knee in the offseason and never have an MRI on the knee that shows that the ligaments are torn. If they catch this is Feb he's healthy for the start of this season. I just cant believe that two torn ligaments were missed for that long into the preseason.
Well thats even more awful. I can somewhat understand his initial desire to play this season, but if he would have had the surgery in Jan/Feb, he would have been ready or very close to ready at the start of this season. The way the story has been out there it made it seem as if he only knew in August that both were torn. The team doctors knew about both ligaments being torn and recommended he have surgery to repair them back in January.
