Shockey rips Saints for mishandeling his injury (1 Viewer)

Following his team's Week 7 loss, a clearly frustrated Jeremy Shockey ripped the Saints for mishandling his groin injury and was unsure if he'd play in Week 8 in London.Shockey said his groin injury was rooted in a training camp misdiagnosis, and he may have done further damage to it after "doing the splits" on the first play of Sunday's game. "It's not a 3-6 week recovery time," said Shockey. "It's really a 5-7 week. I'm just not healthy." Shockey continued to play through the injury and was hopeful that it was only scar tissue breaking up. We should have an update on Shockey's status by Monday. I am missing something - mainly because I haven't followed - but I thought he has a sports hernia?

I know that a SH feels a lot like a groin pull, is that what is happening?

I think what's happening is that Shockey is airing his team grievances publicly because he's an unprofessional prima donna. I wonder how his teammates like him.

Bottom line for me is that this sounds like Shockey may sideline himself for the next couple of weeks.

Am I the only one who doesn't see the "rips Saints"?
Guess your not very perceptive  He's saying that the Saints rushed him back from his injury i.e. mishandled his injnury.
That's not fair. I can see what CN is saying. It's not like we have a quote here of Shockey saying, "If these a--bags hadn't misdiagnosed me I'd be fine right now". All that's in the statement is that it was misdiagnosed. There is a way to say that without assuming he was "ripping" them. Tone of voice could matter a lot with this quote.

Im just saying, when I see RIPS SAINTS, Im expecting a few F-Bombs or something.I read the whole article, and from that article, it just seems he was frustrated and thought the team doctors could have handled it differently. So while most people only see he "rips saints", not many will see "I want to help this team win that brought me here," Shockey said. "I'm just disappointed in myself. I'm making plays and everything, but I'm just not healthy."

Is it me or is Shockey the one who wanted to play this early? what's the difference between a 3-6 week and 5-7 week injury when you say you are ready to play in week 3? I think this is more competitive frustration. And I agree with CN. IF this is "ripping your team" it was the weakest "rip" ever.

Here's the whole quote. It does question the teams offseason diagnosis, but I think that more appropriately "rips the team doctor" and not the team. So he says he gets more medical opinions now. The last line of the piece says how badly he wants to win and help the team.

seems like a whole lot of nothing, except that he might have reaggravated the injury. We'll know tue or wed after he visits his 3rd and 4th doctors of the week.

Shockeys not someone that minces words. If he was pissed at the team you'd know it. I think he's just frustrated.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Jeremy Shockey was hurting, frustrated and angry after a miserable return to the New Orleans Saints on Sunday following hernia surgery.

Shockey questioned how the team has handled his injury and was unsure if he’ll play next week in London.

The four-time Pro Bowl tight end, who had missed the past three games with a sports hernia, practiced last week and was cleared to play. But on the first play of Carolina’s 30-7 win, Shockey said he “did the splits” and felt pain.

“I feel a spot in my leg that wasn’t there before,” said Shockey, who indicated he was hopeful he only dug up scar tissue and did not suffer more damage.

Shockey was clearly slowed by the injury. Later, after a catch, Shockey had the ball stripped by Julius Peppers and Carolina recovered. It led to the Panthers’ go-ahead touchdown in a rout that left Shockey in a foul mood despite leading the team with five catches for 50 yards.

“I had a fumble that hurt the team. I missed a backside cutoff block,” Shockey said. “That’s on me, 14 points I felt like I gave up today, not because of effort, but just because physically I’m not healthy.”

Shockey said he may have come back too soon from the surgery, and also indicated the Saints erred by misdiagnosing him in training camp.

“I’m worried that this thing could have been taken care of in camp, like it should have been,” said Shockey, who the Saints acquired from the New York Giants in July for two draft picks. “If it wasn’t misdiagnosed in camp like it was there’d have been no problems. ... Next time I know. When I get hurt I’ll get three or four opinions besides just the team’s.”

Shockey underwent surgery four weeks ago, and had practiced without limitation the week before facing the Panthers. In contrast, Philadelphia Eagles receiver Kevin Curtis had hernia surgery in August and has yet to play this season.

“It’s not a three-to-six-week recovery time,” said Shockey, who alluded to Curtis. “It’s really a five-to-seven-week.”

Shockey’s injury concerns were part of a horrible day for the Saints’ offense, which was held to seven points by Carolina and watched running back Reggie Bush and center Jonathan Goodwin leave with left knee injuries.

Shockey said he would know more about his status Monday.

“I want to help this team win that brought me here,” Shockey said. “I’m just disappointed in myself. I’m making plays and everything, but I’m just not healthy.

I didn't follow Shockey's injury in camp.

According to his quotes, did he have this same inj in camp, re-aggravated in week 3, took off 3 weeks, and again re-injured again today?

Let's see if Shockey's complaints about the team continue to escalate or not.

I know which way I'd bet.

i thought he came back awfully quick if he indeed had a sports hernia. still, his job is to catch passes, no one wants to hear his big mouth.

Per RotoWire on ESPN:

Shockey, who aggravated his hernia issue during Sunday's game, began to feel better during the team's flight to London, the Times-Picayune reports.

Spin: The team did not provide any information regarding Shockey's expected status for this weekend's game, though head coach Sean Payton said he would have more details about the team's injuries on Wednesday. If Shockey is unable to go this week against the Chargers, Billy Miller and Mark Campbell would split time at tight end.

I think a lot of shockeys 'act' has to do with his strong desire to win (and contribute in doing so). I think that was more #####ing about the embarrassing loss, than anything else. Just a hunch. But I think he'll play this week. He seems like a guy who isn't above getting 'the shot' to play.

I often "feel better" as long flights progress, and it has nothing to do with recovery from sports hernias.

I'd post more but that would be like adding insult to inquiry...

WATFORD, England -- One of the first people I saw upon walking into The Grove, the resort where the New Orleans Saints are staying this week, was tight end Jeremy Shockey.

Shockey

He was bouncing around and seemed to be in a much better mood than he was in Charlotte less than 24 hours ago. After Sunday's loss to the Panthers, Shockey said he had aggravated the sports hernia he recently had surgery before, questioned why the original injury wasn't diagnosed sooner and wasn't even sure he'd make the trip to London for Sunday's game with the San Diego Chargers.

He did and coach Sean Payton said Shockey was feeling better Monday than he did Sunday. Payton said he expects Shockey to be able to play Sunday. Shockey wasn't available to talk to the media, but he seemed to be moving well and was smiling as he passed through the lobby several times.

"I'm sure he's got some soreness," Payton said. "Last night on the plane, it started to feel a little bit better. With both he and Marques [Colston], I've got to be mindful that they're just now getting back in it. You just can't take for granted that you just come back out and play at 100 percent. He's right now on course. He's following all the protocol with his doctor and our trainers and we've just got to monitor how much and making sure there aren't any setbacks. I know he was sore after the game and obviously frustrated. We've just got to make sure we're not taking any negative steps backwards."

Payton said he and Shockey talked during the flight across the Atlantic and he understood Shockey's frustration.

"There's a frustration for all of us in that there was a time in training camp when it went from groin to hernia," Payton said. "It's not uncommon in regards to the diagnosis. Fortunately for us, we know exactly what it is. He saw a specialist in Philadelphia and that guy did a great job with the surgery.

"It's frustrating because you're talking about a player who's used to excelling at a certain level. We discussed this a little bit last night on the flight, how difficult it is when you're used to playing at a certain level and this injury is keeping him from being 100 percent. I do think he's moving forward and getting better. He's an emotional guy and that's one of the things I like about him. I like the fact it's so important to him."
