Shopping at outlets. Worth it? (1 Viewer)

comfortably numb

In NJ we have what seems to be tons of outlet shopping centers in state and within an hour or 90min drive (NY, PA, DE)

I have only been to a few here and there. Some seem to have pretty good deals.

Any outlets have better deals generally speaking?

The outlets are mostly just a variant on the retail stores. Some will have out of season merchandise and discount it, but most just have the same stuff as the rest of the stores and are a waste. Have the Great Adventure and the Tinton falls outlets near me, both are useless.

A lot of its timing. Hit the Nike and UA outlet stores a couple of times per year and sometime find some great deals on clothing. Some things are regular price but they usually have a ton of nice discounted stuff.

These stores mostly carry stock on items that didn't sell and it's time to bring in the new at the store, kind of like a TJ Maxx or Ross. If it's still considered in style/season, it's probably the same price as the store. Whether or not you are getting a good deal, who knows. I don't drive 2 hours to the one out in Gilroy here, but when I'm in Vegas I'll go to the one just outside of town if I have a lot of time on my hands, more to kill time than anything.

Milpitas? Vacaville? Petaluma? Thought you lived in the Bay Area.

I've seen them actually be MORE expensive than at the normal retail stores. A couple of years ago I was looking for some sneakers at the Tangiers outlets in Myrtle Beach. I couldn't find anything under $60. I eventually ended up getting a pair of Nikes at a ##### Sporting Goods at home for $35 on clearance that were priced $70 the same week at the Nike outlet store.

And like someone else said, often the quality isn't the same. So while it may look like you're paying 50% for those expensive jeans, you're actually getting a lesser quality material and weaker stitching.

Outlets have become outdoor malls.

There are good deals to be had but not always. Outlets used to be great for getting the one offs. Like a stitch was out of place so instead of destroying the clothes they sell the dirt cheap

I still enjoy going and usually get stuff when they have a 2 for 1 or second 50 off etc.

I do. That's how much I love these outlet malls or any mall really. I still think Gilroy is it.

Yup was just up to the UA and Nike outlets in the National Harbor. Not everything is cheaper at them, but you can find some decent sales on clearance stuff. I usually go up there once a year and get a new pair of shoes from UA.

The back to school deals are great at these places. Was in Kittery Maine in Aug and got all our back to school stuff at deep discounts at UA, Nike, Aero, and AE

I find them to be hit-or-miss. A lot of stores, especially the high-end ones, now have unique outlet vs. retail lines and quality of clothing. The stuff you find in a Banana Republic outlet is 85% unique. It's not seconds. It's not last season...it's just a different, lower quality line. That said, I find the stuff to be perfectly acceptable, and while I rarely shop at BR retail, I love me some BR outlets.

Most of the outlets do have some of the retail stuff, but it's usually on the clearance rack or something. I know Coach is big for that...a Coach outlet will NOT have 95% of what you find in the retail store. It's flat out different lines of product. I learned that trying to find a purse my wife wanted.

I've been to them, and concur they are hit or miss. Additionally, it's really hard to justify the hour drive out to the closest ones (from where I am in upstate NY~ 1 hour one way) with prices that are still inline with anything you can get off amazon.

Brooks Brother outlets consistently have lower prices than their regular stores and I don't believe (or can't tell) there is any difference in quality. They tend to have their best sales on holiday weekends and typically they have a solid variety of selections.

I go every time I'm near one. Yes, they're worth it. Especially if you go in not looking for anything specific but nose around until you find a really good deal on something that makes sense for you.

Used to be but not anymore.
10-15 years ago there was a lot of real merchandise on the cheap.

Now it is cheap merchandise made for the outlets. Name brands knocking off their own stuff basically.
Outlet "deals" = Black Friday "deals"

You may find the occasional score but it's certainly not worth any extra effort. They both seem to have some mass hypnosis on shoppers making them FEEL like they are getting bargains at very little effort, even when that is not the case. Unless you live across the street from an outlet I'd much prefer to wait for a sale and order from my computer than spend hours of my life wandering around an outlet mall in the hope of finding that needle in a haystack.

Brooks Brothers has a separate line of outlet dress shirts. I bought some at an outlet a couple of years ago that were a bit too big and they wouldn't let me exchange them at a regular retail store because they were the "outlet shirts".

I was a little bummed when I discovered all of my BB outlet clothes were the 346 line. The clothes still look good and have held up well but the half off sales they have on holiday weekends don't get me as excited as they used to.

The F word with an "o" instead of a "u" is filtered? And as only the first part of a word? sheesh
