"One Bite! Everyone Knows the Rules"

I just got hip to these I'll say in recent months and it helps when Dave reviews places you can actually drive to and sample yourself.
He has done quite a few in Florida and I've openly talked about the Violet Stone in St Pete, I've had better pizza but their Philly Cheesesteaks are out of this world.
Florida has mostly terrible food outside of fresh fish which absolutely we have about the best IMHO and quite a large variety. You don't come to Florida for steaks
Florida has the best citrus though

I find it incredible how Dave made a thing out of this, wish I had done it prior to him. He took about the most popular food in America but one that has a lot of average to below average in it and found the best in just about every city, every State he can in America, beautiful business he carved out

I don't think you could do anything and scale it up that big on other foods. Burgers? Hot dogs? Don't think those would work
There is also the one bite app which he must be raking in the dough from, easy to find good pizza spots on there.

-Dave swears by the Newhaven style pies in the Northeast, we tried one for the first time this past weekend.
Almost $30 for a large 1 topping pizza but it was pretty righteous and will have me waiting to get pizza now until i can go back there. 45 minute drive from Jupiter to the North Stuart area this is in but worth it
Had short rib rigatoni bolognese that was even better than the pie, that was $29 but I told the owner it was worth every penny, one of the most delicious Italian meals I have eaten out at in a long long time.
They moved to a new location since Dave did the review, same plaza but much more like a true restaurant, I'm sure the review helped them plenty

If you have never watched one, they can be addictive and I would especially pull up ones for cities you might be visiting soon

Please I've been rating pizza since before Dave's parents even met each other. I live surrounded by some of the best pie in the world. Last thing I need is that guy telling me about pizza.

We landed on the Moon!

J/K MOP, I enjoy these videos as well* and I really think he did good things with them during Covid. He has a "One Bite" bite app that's really good and I use it to find pizza when in new areas.

*There are several unlikeable things about Portnoy but I do enjoy him in the reviews.

It is a great idea, but I would disagree with them being addictive. I find Portnoy obnoxious as heck.
That's too bad, any specific reason?
I find him appealing to most folks and he's done a lot of good for pizza places and was out there during the pandemic when others were hiding, he's like 47 years old now.
Even my wife doesn't mind him when I play the videos...we need something to watch for the 5-10 minutes we're eating, these seem to be quick entertainment
Also the videos are fairly short, Dave knows the audience he's going after, sharp dude IMHO but I understand and am aware why some folks dislike him

How exactly is he obnoxious in the pizza videos?

That guy from Dragon Pizza made himself look like a complete idiot

-Just for S&G has anyone looked up what Dave is worth, I was surprised and partly why I started watching the videos
He built his business by hustling, the guy was in telemarketing/phone sales in the 90s, I come from a sales background, maybe I just appreciate what he was able to accomplish without a silver spoon in his mouth

BTW: He might be an utter doosh bag in real life but he also raised a **** ton of money for Tunnels to Towers Foundation and I can appreciate that
i don't know the man personally but if I saw him i would definitely would want to shake his hand but that's me.

A couple years ago he reviewed the spot down the street from me. They have GREAT pizza and it was totally under the radar. You used to be able to call an order in and pick it up in 20 minutes. Then his review dropped and now it takes forever to get a pizza. I drove by it Sunday at 5:00pm and there was a line of about 40 people out the door. He ruined it!

Yeah I few Portnoy as having a ton of positive attributes (the pizza stuff and what it did for small business, starting a huge sports media company from nothing, etc.) and a ton of negative attributes (the rape allegations including the distasteful stuff he argues was consensual, the general douchiness surrounding some of his stuff, etc.).

He's, you know, human and probably an interesting guy to have a beer with.

He really played his cards right with Barstool. Sold it for over $500mm during the Covid bubble then when various allegations arose and Penn had to cut ties for the ESPN deal, bought it back for one dollar. 5D chess

Dagwood's was my spot in Santa Monica, used to bump into celebrities in there, I don't think the pizza was any better than about 7.5-7.7 but it was popular when I was there back in the early 2000s, then I used to frequent Wildflower over where Venice starts as I recall near the beach, it was pretty good. I've seen that its out of business now.

I never found the pizza to be all that great in LA when I was there. I found myself more into the taco scene and Mexican in general while I was there. I also found the Peruvian food to be very good, sushi and of course Thai was my favorite and use to frequent Thai Town a lot...Thai-Elvis at the Palms, got to meet Matt Dillon there

VERY polarizing guy. He's super wealthy now and the business and fan base is already built. So he can play the "King of the Little guys" act up and look like a saint when he needs to. And FWIW, I do think he cares about small business and that part is pretty genuine. And he's done a ton for them.

But the early days of Barstool's growth were driven by a lot of sexist and misogynistic crap. (The Sam Ponder incident is one example). They did a pretty good job of weaponizing the young angry guy crowd when they wanted to (before Barstool was a corporate business).

No idea if any of the sexual allegations are true. He's been open that he likes it rough and that he goes after very young (but legal) girls but claims its all always consensual.

Some of his act is certainly shtick. And it works for him.

Even if I did not know the sexual assault and workplace stuff, his demeanor just oozes “bro” culture. Portnoy and I are both around the same age. While I grew up in New Jersey and he grew up in Massachusetts, his attitude and the way that he carries himself just reminds me of the most obnoxious people I went to school with that I never want to interact with again.

I don't know much about Barstool Sports to be honest with you
I know it started as a free newspaper and he got all the casinos off shore to advertise and it took off

I think of Andrew Dice Clay when I think of obnoxious...but he's still entertaining IMHO

This Joe Rogan podcast/interview is all over the place and I will post the section that i found the most interesting and that is when Dice got himself banned from MTV for LIFE and most seem to forget this in the early 90s

Possibly but that fella is in desperate need of a :style: consultation from @offdee - shirt is definitely a few sizes too small.
Might have been a kids shirt. Wouldn't say the thrift store shirt was all that great either. Guess it's good he didn't go with the Marcus Camby jersey (glorified tank top) though. We don't need all that chest hair in the video.

I like watching these but 2 things are wrong. First of all the "one bite" Should be "one piece" Second, pizza is difficult to judge right out of the oven like he does. Many times it is so hot he can hardly eat it. Pizza is much better warm than piping hot. Let it rest 5-10 minutes and you get a better judge of flavor.

Excellent point and something I was asking after watching numerous ones, there's hundreds at this point, he can hit 8-10 in a day
What does that do for taste after the 5th or 6th slice? I don't know how you could be unbiased eating at so many so quickly.

-I agree 100% on the temperature, 1st thing I do on any pizza is let it sit for a few minutes, you can't taste a lot from a bite that is shot it's burning your lips and all the inside of your mouth
I don't mind my pizza being closer to room temperature vs piping hot

I like cheese pizza but most of the time I put toppings on and the main reason is most "Mootz" has like no taste. Try eating mozzarella by itself sometime, very little taste in it
So the 2 biggest elements for me are the sauce which i like a good amount on my pizza, I hate when it's mostly just cheese and dough.
The dough is critical as well and i like my pizzas well done much like Dave, also not a fan these days of the thicker crust pizzas, I like the way they taste but you know you're gonna blow up like a whale if you eat a lot of it. Thin crust pizza doesn't seem to pack on the pounds as quickly.

But...Dave is doing it and carved out a success lane, we can all throw rocks but he's out there doing it and we're not
Sure we can be critical, but the owners of most these pizza shops seem to love him.

3.8 out of 5 wouldn't be too terrible. :oldunsure:
I wouldn't go to a restaurant that has 3.8/5.0 on google reviews

Certainly not if there are better options, but I also realize certain ratings sites (Yelp) bring out the worst (in) people. And in this case where a place has gotten some bad publicity I'm sure there have been some poor ratings piled on as a result.

But...that pizza looked pretty bad.

Oh this is 1000% the case. If you filter to pre-Portnoy I am sure the place is like 4.5 stars

Sadly, 99% of the pizza near me is crap. Fortunately, even crappy pizza is good in the grand scheme of things.

But...that pizza looked pretty bad.

it looks like a delicious pie.

What is so bad looking about it? And also, do you even like good pizza? :hophead:

While I dont share Dave's love of SUPER crispy crunchy pizza, that pie was absurdly floppy. Even with a fold, everything just fell right off it. (would have been even worse with toppings) Add in the crust coloring and undercarriage and it was pretty clearly under-cooked. (or there's something with the way they make the dough that just leads to it being flimsy)

As the review points out, the heavy parm taste is pretty subjective.

I like the same styles of pizza he does. Sure he’s a bro. Boston one at that. Can be super annoying but entertaining. I love how 1 bite turns into 20. Has to be the loosest rule ever

Man he had me on the crunch of the crust. Sounded so good. Up in Mass we had a Sally’s and a Frank Pepe’s in the next towns over, great New Haven pizza. Expensive but worth it. I love Dave’s beef reviews. I really miss the food back in Mass

Taking my son there(Stuart) today to try the pizza.

While I dont share Dave's love of SUPER crispy crunchy pizza,

Yep, that's my biggest issue with his reviews. If the pizza is burnt on a cracker, it's in the 8s. Make a great looking pie with a thicker crust, bubble trouble and some sort of fancy green garnish on top - mid 7s if you're lucky

I agree with you to an extent, but he does make his biases very clear. For example, no Neapolitan will score above a 7.9 (and he crushed Pizzeria Bianco here in Phoenix which is some of the best pizza I've ever had).

Just part of his shtick. It doesn't really bother me frankly.

Yeah anyone with that narrow of a view of pizza can't really be taken seriously.

They moved to a new location since Dave did the review, same plaza but much more like a true restaurant, I'm sure the review helped them plenty

If you have never watched one, they can be addictive and I would especially pull up ones for cities you might be visiting soon
Taking my son there(Stuart) today to try the pizza.
Do report back, i would be interested what others think of this place.

One bite, everyone knows the rules.. then takes several bites.

I stopped watching when he sold out and started offering frozen pizza at Walmart. I tried it. Absolute garbage.
