Should a losing team record wise (1 Viewer)

If you win your division. The Saints should have won their division and they would get a home game. You can't punish first place and reward second place. Get rid of divisions if you are going to do so.

You should be rewarded if you win your division. This year is an extreme example but in many years the wild card team may have an easier schedule than that of a division winner. Stick with the way it is, some years it will be fair, some it won't. Whatever rule you come up with will have instances where it does not reward the proper team.

What happens when two teams with a losing records meet in the playoffs? Where should they play?

I think the biggest reason for seeding the teams based on w/l instead of winning their division is that we'll get more meaningful football games the last week or two of the year. Under the current system, it's too easy to lock up your spot in the playoff brackets so that you can opt to rest your starters.

This is one of the biggest arguments in support of seeding the teams based on w/l for me. I'm an fan of a team from the NFC West so it would have screwed over our division in the past decade, but if the NFL wants to keep Week 17 games competitive this would be a good way to do so.

Scheduling division games did that this year (the year of the losing record) just fine. Had playoff implications all over the place and bot the Saints and Bears (at least) risked starters to win their division games. Getting rid of the carrot at the end of the stick for division winners just destroys the division rivalry system. The way it is, division games count way more than any other game so it keeps the rivalry in place with the high stakes. Going straight w/l neuters the league by de-emphasizing divsision matchups. They'll be "just another game" instead of a weighted division rivalry game. A blip (the first since '33) isn't going to happen very often, if at all, no reason to destroy the system for it.And I'd be saying the same thing if it was the Steelers, Rams, Cowboys or Raiders being the 7-9 team.

The rivalry/tiebreaker aspect would be pretty much the same because teams would be playing for seedings and if a teams would have ended up tied in a division, they would have ended up tied for the playoff seedings--so the division games would pretty much mean the same. Whereas this year NE, Philly and the NYJ were able to rest starters this year because they'd locked up their seedings. The same thing could have happened to the Saints/Atlanta if one of those teams had played at 4. Under a w/l seeding all of those teams would have been playing starters.

Saint Fans, I know the Saints would have won at Home.
I dont care about the Saints at all. The NFL should just seed all teams in the playoffs based on their records. The best 4 records in the league should earn bye-weeks. And the best record would always play against the worst record every week. That way you'd always get the best game of the year in the Superbowl. The divisions are still useful since you have to play everyone twice in your division. You still get your rivalry. But there's no need to make the division more crucial for the playoffs. And separating the conferences is just stupid. The league has been united for long enough. Drop the separation and just let the best teams play in the postseason.
