It's not a bad idea to have a Discord server; many of the other sites like Rotoballer have some form of "quick chat" that is usually bustling. I think you'd have to research:

1) What channel would exist on it - Maybe finally The Assistant Coach section can find a home :P
2) Who is going to be on it from the website side (are Dodds or any of the writers going to share their insights occasionally)

Just basically have some sort of a plan on how you want it implemented that's not this.

It may be a way to drive new users to the site but I am not sure how much engagement you're going to get from the SP's tennis-balls-on-their-walker crowd, which is pretty much everyone. And without them, us, it won't find a new audience for FBGs.

I can see the game threads working better on Discord, since real-time, stream of consciousness posting is essentially what those are. If anyone tries to read game threads on the forums after the fact, I guess you'd lose the ability to do that.

Normally I'd say there is the potential to "splinter" the community and discussions but these forums are so ensconced I doubt that would happen.

I am personally not a huge Discord fan. It reminds me a good bit of the old bulletin boards from the pre-internet days. Sites like this (FBG) are more full featured and offer a better experience (for me at least).

That said, "everyone" has their discord server and it is nice to have so many disparate sources united in one spot. I am sure many people participate in (many) more servers than I do, but I probably have about 20 servers. It is nice to be able to go to Discord and any new message that I might want to see is in one spot rather than me having to visit and login to 20 different servers individually. That to me is the benefit of Discord.

Should FBG decide to create a server there, I would echo what others have said... have a definite plan of what you will (and won't) do on DIscord and imperative that there be an active presence of FBG staff. Also don't go crazy creating too many channels. Better to start with fewer and divide if necessary than to "logically" spread everything out and find out that you have some real dead spot channels that clutter the screen but get no use.

Edited to add: Threads! Threads! Threads! Unless I have missed something, Discord does not have threads... just a long, endless stream. That is a big part of what I should have said about I prefer sites like FBG. I need my threads! :)

How are you going to moderate it?

I think this only works when you have a private group or club where people show some sense of restraint.

Dreck Lesscot is big baby. The only people that root for him have the IQ of a rock or an ugly momma.

I answered meh. If you want the server because you feel it may help attract another segment of the market, then go for it. I could see it catching on if some of the FBG expert staff were regularly in there doing live Q & A, coordinating discussion, and interacting with the user base. But if it is intended as just another place for current message board users to hang out, I don't see much point. It is easier to follow continued/lengthy conversations on the message boards.

That's the kind of response I thought we'd get here... I used to be a videogame/sports/animation Writer/Editor back in the day and and active on streams, so I've been active on Discord for awhile. Like I said earlier, there's definitely a market for that "quick chat" ability that you don't get on a forum: the issue is those type of chat rooms (again, I mention Rotoballer) are largely un-moderated, while a well set up Discord can be really good. It can be great for:

  • Assistant Coach WDIS stuff
  • Game Threads (channels)
  • News (bots to certain writers via Twitter)

I guess I want to add this: What content are you and the staff trying to tap into/add to FootballGuys, and what content do you not want to lose from the forum? IMHO the individual player threads will be fine, same with the team threads. Random Question threads will probably be fine (i.e. Discrepancies between Good WRs and the QB throwing to them and Bad WRs with good QBs in Rankings...); those type of things you want a running discussion, not a quick take. The random news threads that get posted outside a player thread take a hit; that easily can be handled by Discord. Probably will take a hit to the Assistant Coach section, but that's not a big deal.

If you want to move certain video podcasts to the Discord (it's a good platform for that stuff), that could be a nice idea to pick up new people. Imagine a community 1 hour FAAB Waivers interactive video podcast with some of the awesome members of the forum (Faust, Hot Dog Sauce Guy, TZMarkie, etc.) w/ a FootballGuys writer as a special guest to lend his insights!

There are definite opportunities to be had using a Discord server, but you ... LOL I just found out Rotoballer ditched their Live Chat and moved to Discord. Yeah, that's where I think the market is going nowadays.

I think it's a way to appeal to a younger audience, and like others have said will work much better for in the moment type threads like GameDay and basically everything in the assistant coach forum. Problem is that you will cut user interest between one space and the other, and without close moderation I've seen even the most benign server explode into a "f-you, no f-you" fest over something trivial if not closely monitored in a way that message boards never seem to approach.

So we're not moving the Deshaun Watson thread over there then?

Can someone explain what a discord server is and why they are so popular today?

What advantage do they offer over a traditional message board?

Since social media is always evolving it makes sense for FBG to have a presence in places like discord, tiktok, and onlyfans. That seems to be where the eyeballs are at in 2022.

In addition to messaging you can have voice chat rooms where you could talk with other people about football, similar to zoom.

It's a chatroom.

7:54pm (Pacific time) FBG email announcing they have a discord server.

I feel like we did good work in here.

Paging @shuke and @General Malaise

I have no idea what discord is or means and I'm about a football season away from unplugging from technology for good. It's too much. It's overload and I can't keep up and I no longer care to keep up.

@Joe Bryant
can you explain to us old farts what the discord server will provide, what your plans are for it, and what we should expect from it? Some kind of exec summary to lure us in. Thanks.

Well, whatever it is, my work firewall will not allow access.
"Site can't provide a secure connection"

Unless I get it on my phone, I'm out!

Yea, our opinion really mattered and factored in on this decision.

1) Considering only 17% said Yes to the survey . . .

2) They not only set up the Discord page in 7 hours but they also put together a how to page . . .

Apparently FBGs works fast. If they wanted to set up a discord page, then set one up. But why even go through the charade of asking our opinion?

Yea, our opinion really mattered and factored in on this decision.

I'm always interested in what folks think on things. My expectation is very few here would be interested in a discord as folks here already have a great platform for discussion. But I'm still very interested in the opinions of people here on how they feel about anything we do at Footballguys. Thanks.

"Charade"?
One of the main things I wanted to know was how many people would answer with "what is a discord?". Turns out most did. Which is what I was thinking. But also something I'm interested in.

Thanks @joey A discord server is basically just another format for social discussion. Similar to a message board. It seems like it's more popular with younger folks.

And I don't mean it to lure anyone in at all. Especially not from here as this is already such a great platform for discussion. We've just spent a ton of time and effort and money getting this new board up and going and I think it's going great.

I don't see it having any effect on our forums here at all. It's just another platform for people to talk football. I don't anticipate there being much crossover between this forum and our discord platform.

Then wouldn't something like "FBG has set up a Discord page. Do you know what Discord is?" be more honest and find out the exact same information?

Just for the record, I'm 42 years old but tech/gaming savvy, which may or may not be the reason I knew what Discord was ten years ago. The funny thing was I was going to check out the Rotoballer Discord after work to take notes and talk about what they did that could be good to do here. I checked my email 5 minutes ago and was like "SON OF A-"

I'll check it out on my phone now since I'm restricted at work.

EDIT: Oh you guys have been busy planning this for awhile, haven't you? I LOVE the channel lineup!

Okay, even though I'm a "SP or Die!" guy. I went to the discord server because I'm super open minded. When I got there I immediately wanted to blow up the entire internet.

Literally, not figuratively.

Obviously it's a new format for me and I'm sure I'm doing it wrong. But, for example, is the Mailbag channel/stream/thread really just supposed to be one perpetual stream-of-consciousness group ramble that updates in real time?

I am sure there are embedded tools to make it easier but initially it's very awkward to navigate, relative to a forum thread.

I checked it out as well. Agree with the above about stream of consciousness; my first thought was that harder to follow what was going on than a Joyce novel.

But, I’ll note that when I click the link to connect my FBG subscription to Discord, I get an error that page not found.

If you see page not found on attempting the link, that means you’re not logged in to the Footballguys website

We’ll make that clearer, but for now, logging in is the solution!

There has been lot's of fraud and hacking done through Discord in the Web3, NFT space.

Just as an FYI...
