the "hip check"
speaking from 20 plus year of officiating high school football, I have delivered a few of these....some even worse than what Tony C did...if you watch the play Marsh is going to be running very closely to the ref as he is returning to the sideline.....very close....IMO Tony C. actually kind of does this in preparation for possible contact....kind of bracing yourself or squatting down a little to absorb the contact....instead of just standing straight up and then being knocked forward off balance if there is contact....he was probably hoping Marsh went further around him, but was prepared to absorb the contact if there was any.....
many times on the field, players with helmets and pads can kind of loose a sense of space and their surroundings when they are moving...they don't realize kind of the extra size they have....I know that sounds weird, but it happens....players often get up, jump around, move around without really realizing what is going on directly around them....I have been bumped, knocked down, and run over more times than I can count and none of them on purpose....I've had my lip split open by a helmet....accidently hit in the face and other areas by flailing arms of players....some maybe my own fault as I am coming in to clean up a play....others just because the player doesn't really realize that I am there until its too late....
I really think Tony C had a natural reaction to almost help initiate the contact and absorb it when he saw it might be coming instead of not moving and being "run into" and knocked off balance so to speak, if that makes sense....think of it as knowing/seeing that you are about to be in a car wreck....you kind of do something to prepare to absorb the blow....I have done this several times and help initiate the contact with no ill intent...it was kind of a "best for both of us" kind of move....I recognized impending and possibly inevitable contact that the player did not realize might be coming because they are somewhat oblivious to spacing at the time....and I have forearm shivered or hip checked players several times in these situations and then we just move on....this was kind of out there with the two of them by themselves, but the concept is the same...
