Should you make a trade if you're not making the playoffs? (1 Viewer)

I was wondering what your guys opinions are about trading away players if your team is out of the playoff hunt. I don't mean trading for the sake of collusion, but if an owner offers you a fair trade, should you take it??? In one of my leagues (redraft league) I was trying to make a trade for a top tier RB and had Peyton Manning as trade bait- The big ones out there such as Adrian Peterson, LT, Addai, S. Jackson, & Westbrook were either in my division or untouchable. A team in my league had Willie Parker, but he was 1-7 and out of the playoff hunt. I offered him Peyton Manning and Thomas Jones for Drew Brees & Willie Parker. Keep in mind this was before last weeks performance by Brees. The commisioner in my league freaked out and said that the guy I offered the trade to had "no right to trade" because he was out of the playoff race at this point. However, our league offers a $200 prize for the team who scores the most points and doesn't make the playoffs, and that guy is only about 70 points from the next team to get that prize. In my opinion, you should be able to do what you want with your team as long as it isn't collusive. What do you guys think??

I might be able to understand the commish's position if there was nothing to gain, but the team has something to gain namely the $200.

Trade should go through without question in my mind.

If these types of trades are to be prevented, the commish needs to discuss it next year with the owners.

I let trades go through if they are in the normal. If someone wants to play the spoiler then go for it. If it is a crazy one sided trade though then no.

The trade looks fine to me. All teams have the 'right' to trade, no matter the record.Id

The argument that teams that are "out of it" should not be able to trade is bull####. If the trade helps both teams it should not matter, even if it helps the 1st place team. If I am out of it, I want to be the spoiler for any team I play. I don't have anything else to play for. Even if my team was 0-9, i'd still be trying like hell for the pride of winning that 1st game. And if someone vetoed my trade because the trade also incidentally helped the 1st place team in the process, I'd be totally piszed.

But if you don't want people trading with teams that are out of it put that in the league rules at the start of the season.

Just call it the re-tard rule.

The first year I played FF I would have been in that situation. We were all allowed to trade and I would have been steamed if could not do it. Why? Because I was trying to win a game against my friends and have some fun. If you start restricting the guys on the bottom, they will just walk off and not set there line-ups.

Explain this to me like I'm someone who thinks member numbers are an important thing.

Good leagues don't have their playoffs weeks 14-16. Period. So deadlines should be circa weeks 12-14 for "legit" leagues ;-) But that being said....Teams should ALWAYS remain competitive. If you are 2-10, you need to be active on the waiver, and how ever else, to get to that 3rd win. Your league shoudl be FULLY competitive the course of the season... not fair for one 9-3 team to play the guy whom has given up at 2-10, while the other 9-3 team gets stuck with a matchup vs. the 7-5 team in week 13.If the trade is fair, and benefits both teams. It should DEFINITELY go through. And I recommend a booby prize for the worst team, something significant to keep everyone engaged, much less competitive.$.02

Frankly, I think that doing trades - and even trying to get trades done - is one of the best parts of fantasy football. Therefore our league wanted to extend the trade deadline as late as possible into the season. In order to get over the concern regarding a team that's "out of it" trading players to a team that's steamrolling into the playoffs, there are several rules changes that can be made. You just need to be a little inventive. One (discussed above) is to have a separate purse for total points for the team that doesn't make the playoffs. Our concern with going this route is that there would still be a couple of teams who - from a total points perspective - were "out of it" by week 9 or 10.We elected to have our top 5 teams make the playoffs (based off a Power Rankings system) and the 6th and final seed (the wildcard) goes to the one of the remaining 7 squads that scores the most points in Week 13. Therefore, everyone still has hope of making the playoffs until that week. Even a bad team can put up enough points one week to back their way in. We've found it's kept owners engaged all the way to the end of the regular season. No offense, but there's no need for you to off-handedly denigrate all other leagues that don't handle their trade deadline the same as yours.
