Shuke's 1400 favorite songs by 1400 different artists. (1 Viewer)

Cool. I do this with people.

I put nearly 70 people on my "under consideration" list from this thread and yours. Most were new to me, but some I knew from b4.

I am happy to ANNOUNCE the first elevation of a person to my "favorites" playlist as a result.
Well you gotta spill who it is, you know!

19. Wilco - Spiders

My wife and I have been married for 18 years.  This was our first "shared" favorite band when we were dating.

I would say that they are probably one of my 5 favorite bands despite this song being in the 19th spot.

Extremely tough to make a choice here.  Others considered At Least That's What You Said, Misunderstood, You are My Face, Via Chicago,
Forgot to mention that @The Dreaded Marco chose Misunderstood as one of his three picks.

58. U2 - Sunday Bloody Sunday

Very tough choice.  U2's best three songs, by far, (this, Pride, and New Year's Day) were all released before 1985.  Deal with it.
Man, I was a huge U2 fan back in the day.  They totally lost me after Achtung Baby.  Haven’t looked back since.

Every so often I’ll revist Boy, October, and War.  There are still some great tracks that hold up.  One that sticks out is “Two Hearts Beat as One”.    https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uIuAFBRyjj4  It’s fairly atypical for early U2 in that it’s not political or spiritual.

60. Thin Lizzy - Boys are Back in Town

There's a handful of classic rock songs still left in the list that while overplayed, I don't think I'll ever tire of them.  This is one.
This song can never be overplayed.  It’s pretty much perfect.  I even named a cocktail I invented after Phil Lynott.

56. New Radicals - You Get What You Give

"What the hell, shuke?!!??"

That's right.  Number 56.  Ever.
The joke about me loving this song harkens back to a 3.5 hour drive my wife and I took back when this song was hot.  It must have come on the radio 5 or 6 times during the trip.  My wife hated it. I claimed to love it (just to be a tool)and would refuse to change the station.

52. Cheap Trick - Surrender

Another one of those overplayed classic rock tunes I still can't get enough of.

I think a few others may like this.  @TannerBoyle @OrtonToOlsen @Chico's Bail Bonds @Reg Lllama of Brixton @Officer Pete Malloy
Yes sir. One of the greatest pop/rock songs ever. Cheap Trick is vastly underrated.

41. Steely Dan - Reelin' in the Years

For some reason, because I'm a Phish fan I'm supposed to be a huge Steely Dan fan.  I appreciate the jazz fusion sound, and I like other songs like Peg, Josie, Night By Night, Pretzel Logic, etc.  But I just really can't get into them.  I've never owned one of their albums.

So, yeah, I'm going with this cliche song as my pick.  But you can't argue with the awesomeness of this song.  Also, in the late 80's there was a syndicated radio show by the same name, and they obviously used this song as their bumper music.  At the time they played a lot of 60's/70's stuff.  Man, those classics seemed so old.  That would be like listening to songs circa 2000 now.
Fun fact: Steely Dan got their name from an ironwork they knew named Daniel.

39. Raspberries, The - Go All the Way

If this doesn't bring @Binky The Doormat back, I don't know if anything will.
More power pop deliciousness*

37. Modest Mouse - Float On

I just got into these guys a few years ago, and I love their sound.  I seem to be a latecomer to a number of bands that originated between 1990-2010, which will be well-documented here with my remaining picks.
I’m partial to We’ve Got Everything https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0XZY-z85cx4

32. The Smiths - How Soon Is Now

I love that sound.  You know the one.  I don't even know what instrument is making it.

Also, someone here once thought my avatar was Morrissey.
Good call. The Smiths are one of those bands where I can’t listen to an entire album without skipping half of their songs.   My choice would be Please, please https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w3qPMe_cCJk

29. Queen - Under Pressure

Another awesome summer late night driving on the highway with the windows open song.
Rubbish.  Is this some sort of joke?

28. David Bowie - Starman

I changed my mind on this pick a dozen times.  Other songs that occupied this spot at one time: Ziggy Stardust, Young Americans, Life on Mars?, The Man Who Sold The World, Queen #####.
Another one where there are too many to choose from.   My favorite? There’s only room for one and here she comes, here she comes https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zLnPd7lzT4g

25. Fugazi - Waiting Room

I'm not really a fan of Fugazi, probably have heard only a handful of songs.  And not a big fan of the genre. But this is just incredible.  If anyone can recommend anything similar, please do.

This is just a taste.  I'll be back in a few hours.
@Good Posting Judge

24. LCD Soundsystem - Call the Police

LCD Soundsystem has been around since 2002.  I didn't really know anything about them until I saw them perform this on SNL in May 2017 (this will be somewhat of a theme over the last selections).  Since then, I can't seem to get enough of this song.  I've ventured into some of their other stuff.  I like it, but can't listen to solely for too long.

I'll try to get this on the Spotify list tonight so @General Malaise has a chance to hear it.

22. Mott the Hoople - All the Young Dudes

Another inspiration for undergoing this endeavor, is that growing up I loved when my hometown local rock station every Memorial Day weekend did a top 500 countdown.  I'm pretty sure it's where I first heard this song, and many others that didn't get regular radio play.

I've liked almost everything I've heard from them.  They are another forgotten band that deserves more love.
Great song. Fun fact: Mott the Hoople actually rejected “Suffragette City” so Bowie gave them this.  I think we’re all better for it.

21. Smashing Pumpkins - 1979

This is one of those songs that when I close my eyes while listening to it, I can transport myself to college house parties of my youth.

At a little over 4 minutes, this song is way too short.  I always feel disappointed when it's over.
I’ll go with the aforementioned Cherub Rock.  Just a standout track that got lost in a bunch of goop that came out that same year.

ETA

The * under The Rasperries...

Theres a dude on Spotify named Ken Oatman that has a gigantic collection of playlists mostly featuring pop/power-pop.  Dude makes playlists like it’s his job.

Possibly my favorite band.

Definitely the band whose albums I find the most consistently very good to great. Love them all.

What? Spill?

Did I ever tell you all that I was the 1st Responder to all chemical spills for 17 years?

You all DO NOT want to know what technically qualifies as "spilled chemicals"!

Ha!  I lived in Wicker Park in Chicago.  Mostly stayed there.  Mostly at a place called Enoteca Roma and at various music venues.  I think I saw you.
Yep!

That was me! 😀

I really like spiders!

Here is a pet I had in '12 - 2nd shot.

I had to get rid of her when I woke up to find a huge egg in her cage. ☹️

Oh= song rox!

On the Wilco front, I heard Jesus, Etc. while at a winery tonight and was reminded how much I adore that song.  Also, I assume everyone has seen I Am Trying to Break Your Heart, but it's a top-flight documentary even for non-Wilco-fans.

Also, regarding Jesus, Etc. ... @Nipsey  Just sayin.

There's no instrumental version. Not even a crappy karaoke track. Wilco songs are tough to find.

17. Arcade Fire - Intervention

Another band I discovered by watching SNL.   This performance was in 2007.  This totally blew me away.  I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing.  I was sitting a this desk, watching SNL and browsing the FFA ( :nerd:  ), although I was in another room (the room my now 9 year old daughter occupies).  I really wasn't paying attention to the introduction, so during the song I started a thread "WHO IS PLAYING ON SNL RIGHT NOW?!".

They immediately became one of my favorite bands.

I much prefer the energy of this over the studio version.

I remember this.

I didn't want to admit this, but now I will.  When I listened to The Lemon Twigs, I thought the last time I'd been so blown away by a band and the "new" stuff they were doing, it was Arcade Fire.  I've soured on them since then, but that feeling was phenomenal.

Hey everyone, listen to The Lemon Twigs!

Like LCD SS, another favorite band from this century.

16. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Tuesday's Gone

I love the early guitar solo and then the piano solo midway through the song.

Not Freebird!  @pecorino
The Needle and the Spoon is another non-freebird excellent song
Both great!

My contribution:

Simple Man - Lynyrd Skynyrd

"Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"

"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"
