Sick Days (1 Viewer)

Every job is different - union v non-union, peformance based etc.

What is your philosphy on Sick Days? Are they there for the taking, or there when you need them?

Job is unionized, so we're basically untouchable, and women (99% of the time) use ALL their sick days, for child related activities/illnesses.

-- What say you, in your line of work?

I take them when I'm sick enough that I can't/shouldn't come to work, which is a couple times a year max. Not sure if I've taken one in the last year or two if not. But I don't have kids.

I think my employer may track them but not sure... never has been an issue.

I do hate "contagious but going to be a work warrior anyway" guy. One guy did it 2-3 times in a 6 mo spell and got several in the office sick each time. Actually told him (from the door of his office) the last time that I respect his decision to come into the office, but I won't be interacting with him until he is well. (Had big plans 3-4 days later)

No official sick days - if you are sick you can either work remote or if you are too sick for that just call in sick.  Because we don't have sick days and my wife has been a SAHM for years I've never had to take time off for sick kids although I have used flex time to take them to the doctor.

We run flex days, so it's mixed with your vacation.

I can also work work from home, so if it's something contagious but not landing me in bed for the day, I can negotiate a work day in my PJs.

We have sick days, separate from regular leave, and everyone in my office takes them when they're sick. A few do when their kids are sick but most of us have wives who take care of the kids when they're sick.

I like that we have a certain amount of sick days as it encourages taking them instead of coming in, being useless, and making others sick. You're not being a badass when you come in sick, you're being a self-centered #####. If you save over 2000 hours in your career you can exchange them for additional retirement.

I'm about 40 hours in sick leave debt as I took sick leave for our adoption (our rules allow for it).  But I'll use regular leave for now if I'm sick. I don't have much saved as I just started 3 months ago.

Its all combined into PTO where I work which makes it simple since I'm obviously going to use all of that but I hardly ever use it when I'm sick.  If it was a small fixed number (say 5), I'd use all of that even it wasn't for sickness.   If it was unlimited, I'd probably take about 5.   I try to be smart without leaving any days off on the table.

Quit whining about your sick coworkers

I get about 48 hours. I mostly use them for doctors appointments for the kids 2-3 hours at a time. I have also used them for time off after my wife has a baby. I make sure to use them all up each year.

When I was combined PTO - I would rarely take a day sick unless I really had too.

Now that my sick is separate from my vacation - I have taken a couple more days than I normally would have in the past.

I use them as needed.  Especially now for Drs visits and stuff where before I would go to the doctor as a last resort.

I also use them occasionally for my kids when needed but my wife usually stays home if my kid is sick.

And this year - I actually had some medical problems that required days

I mentioned the risk of making others sick (and I'm not completely buying your article) but really it's that I don't want to hear your coughing, sniffing and see you looking miserable.
That article isnt really meant to be scientific. I took it as tongue in cheek. "Be a slacker"

When we had sick time one way to get yourself fired was to manage your sick time.

Obviously since you're union the convention is that sick time is there to be abused and used as vacation.  The company you're working for should move to PTO.

We get 10 days of sick time each year. When you reach 20 days, they knock you back to 10. If someone is going to be out long term and does not have enough days accrued, we can donate up to 40 hours to them.

We have PTO, and I work from home four days a week. It's very hard to call your manager and tell them you're too sick to crawl to your kitchen table and do your job. Having said that, I'm not above taking a half-day for an appointment from time to time.

I have the separate sick/vacation hours also.

One thing I've seen is that if you use more than a few a year, it's reflected in annual reviews.

I don't get sick much and have never really used sick days when I just didn't feel like going to work, so I'm always pretty much maxed out on them.

We get 12 per year.  They max out at some point, but it's a ridiculous number.  I don't know how many I have right now, but if I had to guess it'd be around 40.

I use half days fairly liberally.  If I'm ahead in my work, our upcoming calendar is full, and we have full coverage in the office then I'll bail at lunch probably once a month.

Not if I've needed to use them recently for the kids though.

All lumped together as PTO. You can carry over 9 days a year, which used to be the number of "sick" days you got per year. Once you accumulate 60 you can't accumulate any more. I never use em' and accumulate them. I will soon have 60 in which case I will be using every single one of them every year.

I have unlimited PTO but if sick, tend to work from home.  I interact face to face with 15 of the people that report to me daily so I don't want to get them sick.  As for my team, they get a limited amount of sick time and can only carry 3 days a year over.  I encourage them to use their time off, both vacation and sick time.

Work at a law firm.  I don't get a certain number of vacation/sick days a year.  Take days as you need them, take vacation when you want.  If your billable hours are high enough and are accessible when you are out, nobody seems to care.

Guess I'm the only one here who uses sick days like they are vacation days. Always use all of my allotted days.

This thread made me look closer at our policies - we apparently have more time than I could possibly use:

15 days of holiday/calendar year

20 days of vacation

80 hours of sick time (40 of which may be used for personal business)

80 hours of parent days (1st 12 months after new child or adoption) and 40 hours of bereavement

I am in a sales role so I either am on the road or in my kitchen.  We don't submit time cards and manage vacation from our Outlook calendars.  My wife and I are "hosting" a travel event in the Bahamas in December for 5 days - these don't count towards vacation.

Amazingly, we have some folks who purchase additional vacation.

Union here. If my kids are sick, I use my sick time to stay home. Wife has combined vacation/sick/holiday so her staying home just means less time off. Probably use a sick day every othe month or so cause of the kids. I am not shy about using them. Still have like 150 hours sick time banked though.

We have separate sick and PTO. Sick used to be allowed to be used when children/family members were sick, but I guess people were abusing that so they changed the policy. I never get sick other than minor colds about once a year (*knocks on wood*), so now if my kids get sick, I just "come down with it" also. :brush:

We've had just one PTO bank for vacation, holidays, and sick time for years but that changed this year because AZ passed a law requiring employers to offer something like 5 days of paid sick time a year. They moved some of our time over to a separate bucket but supposedly we can use them interchangeably. I noticed I've been accruing a little more each paycheck the last few months so they must have increased the total a little bit.

My company (construction) has a very antiquated time off system that is really built for the people that work in the field, but they still apply it to the office staff of 15.  It hasn't changed because the two guys in charge don't have to adhere to it and so it doesn't effect them.

We get 2 weeks vacation (no matter how long you worked here) and unlimited/untracked sick time.  I think both policies are ridiculous.  On one hand, the lady that has worked here for 20 years deserves way more than 2 weeks vacation.  On the other, the new girl that takes a "sick" day off about once every two weeks is abusing that policy.

They both piss me off, but the newly crowned President doesn't give a rip (son of the company's founder who retired in January).  He's currently on his like 5th vacation of the year on the beach.  He either leaves early or takes a half day literally every week.  Sure he answers calls and emails at all hours and is good at construction stuff, but his staff management and lack of leadership are going to be a real problem sooner than later.

This is just one of about 5 issues I brought up during my latest review process (where I even gave them a possible solution for each issue). All of it seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

In our company we have set vacation days and unlimited paid sick / personal days.  Personal days are up to the manager's discretion, usually given out if someone has ran out of vacation days and needs a day off for something

.  Most people do not take off many sick days.  If management feels like someone is abusing the sick days they will address it with the employee.

I think I average 1 a year.  Some years none, some years a couple.  We have 100% paid short term disability in the event of sickness / injury (up to 6 months) and 80% long term disability after 6 months.

2000?  Are you getting 2 weeks a year?  That's still 25 years worth.

Your job (and benefits) sounded awesome until I got to the bolded.  Condolences.

We get 10 sick days/yr at 100%, 10 at 80%.

4 weeks vaca, and 1 day off every 3 weeks, paid for "mental health"

Can't complain, but I really dont think I ever use up the sick days. But starting to think I should.

I am a law firm. If I'm not making money, I get sick.

104 hours / year. And apparently (I haven't looked closely at the rules) you can exchange the hours in quarters, meaning just over 500 gets you 3 months.  The bigger benefit is unlimited carry over. @Doctor Detroit knows these rules better than I do.

Considering once you've been there long enough you get 208 hours vacation and 104 hours sick plus every federal holiday, it's not half bad. Plus I get a day off every other week by working eight 9 hour days and one 8. So yeah, a day off every other week plus 39 other days, and 10 federal holidays that's roughly 75 days off not including weekends.

I work for the federal government. We accrue 4 hours of sick leave every 2 weeks, with no cap or expiration.  I rarely use mine, so by the time I retire I'll probably have over a full year's worth banked.

Right - which gives you another year towards retirement.

you can add 2 week increments to your service retirement calculation

I predict that someday you are going to get terribly sideways with a boss.

My best PTO situation was with a company that gave 20 PTO days a year and could accrue up to 30 days. I rarely got sick so once I maxed out, I would take a day off every few weeks to go to the beach and eat In-N-Out.

I don't even know what our official policy is.  Old boss was cool so if I was sick or needed to take some personal time he didn't care

Not sure on new boss.  Don't think he really cares either but I'll cross that bridge when I come to it
