Sidney Rice in 2010 (1 Viewer)

Eminence

Alright I unfortunately have Rice rostered in a few of my leagues and I've got a few questions that I hope you fellas' can help me with.

1.) What is the earliest people whom have had this surgery have returned?

2.) Is this the type of surgery where Rice could return but not be up to speed right away?

3.) What should I do with Rice in my redraft and keeper league? No one in their right mind is going to buy.

From Rotoworld:

Vikings coach Brad Childress wouldn't rule out the possibility of Sidney Rice going on injured reserve following Monday's hip surgery.

"We haven’t made any determination of whether he’ll be on IR or PUP," said Childress. Rice will be placed on reserve/PUP at the very least, costing him the first six games of the season. Childress acknowledged that Rice "won't do anything" football-related for another eight weeks. The team will reevaluate Rice at that stage, but he's no sure thing to contribute this season. I think best case:8 weeks puts it right around the middle of October. Assuming no setbacks, let's say he takes 2-3 weeks to get back onto the field in limited action, another 2 weeks to get up to game speed. That puts you into December. Just in time for fantasy playoffs.Worst case is IR obviously.Redraft: Assuming you've drafted already I think it's a hold right now. I wouldn't drop him if you can avoid it. I think you have 3 options as we get around the time when he can do "football related" things again:1) If you're team is looking good, hold and hope he returns to form for the playoffs2) If you're team is okay, try to sell to a playoff bound team for a player that can help you now.3) Drop for the roster spotI think 1 and 2 are the actions if news is good regarding Rice's recovery. Action 3 is if news isn't good.

Traded Rice yesterday afternoon and feel horrible for the other guy. It is a friendly league so I was tempted to reverse the trade when I found out the news this morning. However sometimes the breaks go for you and sometimes against.

"won't do anything" football-related for another eight weeks doesn't sound good. Even if his hip has recovered he won't be in prime shape. Say he comes back in Week 7. Can you start him? Very risky. Then if he doesn't do much, can you start him the following week? When does he actually become a good FF option? Will your team be strong enough to risk throwing him into your lineup at that point?

If you've already drafted him you don't have many options right now. But if you haven't, steer clear. This is reminding me of Antonio Bryant last year, who I gambled on in several leagues - he came back and even had a few good games, but was essentially roster deadweight.

My take today: (Redraft purposes)

Place Rice where Berrian was going.

Bump Harvin up a round.

Place Berrian 3-4 rounds behind where Harvin was going.

Keep Schiancoe (sp) where he is.

I think it's a huge loss for Favre's upside value for 2010.

I would think that the Vikings should be calling the Chargers right now. With Favre at QB, they have to try to win now. VJax is a great red zone target and deep threat, plus with his superb run blocking, he'd make AP even more dangerous. Plus, they are in opposite conferences, so there wouldn't be any competition for playoff spot issues. They could trade Rice to the Chargers, who wouldn't get much, if anything, from him this year, but they're not going to get anything out of VJax either.

Of course, it makes too much sense, so it won't happen.

Per rotoworld at 10:40 pm on 08/24/2010:The San Diego Union-Tribune's Kevin Acee hints that the Vikings have made inquiries about unsigned restricted free agent Vincent Jackson.Citing league sources, however, Acee reports that Minnesota "immediately balked" at Jackson's exorbitant contract demands. Acee reports that "no one" is willing to pay Jackson the five-year, $50 million deal he's seeking. V-Jax isn't going to the Vikings, but he's just as likely not going anywhere until he 1) Signs his one-year tender, and 2) Lowers his long-term asking price.
