It's debatable he was a Top 5 DE when he was in the league.

That is off base, the man changed and won games single handed at times. He was one dimensional, but he was a TERROR of a pass rusher. If fun to poke fun at him now, but he was legit and one of the top DE's in the game when he played (in his prime).
Michael StrahanJason Taylor
Dwight Freeney
Julius Peppers
Simeon Rice goes RIGHT HERE
John Abraham
Jared Allen
Osi Umenyiora
Patrick Kerney
He may be in the next tier after these guys. He was VERY consistent at getting to the QB, but don't think he was a Top 5 DE and certainly isn't now.
Umenyiora shows great potential, but has only had 2 years of being a dominate force (double digit sacks, at least one per game avg) and 1 1/2 of being good.J. Allen is on his way to possibly being there as he has had 3 yrs of being dominate and having two season of 8 and 9 sacks each. Still, his body of work is ongoing...
Kerney has had 10 yrs and only had 4 seasons of double digit sacks. Add that the rest are 3, 1, 6, 7, 5 & 5. Granted the two 5's were in shortened season for him, but he still only avg'ing .5 sacks a game in those seasons.
Abraham is a beast that has recorded double digit sacks in 6 of his 9 seasons. Matter of fact, the only reason why he had 3 single digit season could be put on the fact he didn't play a whole season. He avg'd a sack per game, except for his 1st season in ATL, which he played only 8 games.
Rice played in 9 seasons and had 6 season with double digit sack seasons. He came out the box with 17 sacks his rookie season. Other than the last two years that he was injured and had single digit sacks...his only single digit sack season was year 2 where he played 13 games.
So, one could argue that Abraham is worthy of being tied to Rice, but the others I listed are not. One thing that I could be used in Rice's favor is that he has 4 career INT's, while Abraham doesn't. An arguement for Abraham is that IF wasn't as injury prone...he'd most likely clearly be ahead of Rice in Sacks. My point is that it's easy to cast Rice off because of the two past non-seasons for him, but before then....HE WAS A BEAST and one of the top DL that had to be accounted for by all of the other teams. Some fans in TB like to bash him a lot because Rice was a pure passer and did very little against the run, but he was built for rushing the passer and having him do anything was stupid.
