similar 2 point discussion (1 Viewer)

I have always wondered why it is conventional NFL wisdom to always wait til the last possible moment to go for 2.

I dislike the logic for one main reason. No matter what, you have to make the 2 pointer. Lets say i am down by 15 and there are 4 minutes left. I score a td, kick the extra point and then get the ball back after the other team fumbles and we engineer a brilliant 11 play drive converting 2 4th downs to score with 1 second left in the game go for 2 and then we miss the 2 pointer, game is over we lose.

Now lets say we go for two when we score the first TD. Miss the 2point attempt. and are now down by 9. Well there is 4 minutes left in the game and i know i have to score twice, so on those 4th down plays i have the option of going for a field goal because i know i need to get the ball back anyway. Maybe i dont run as many short plays because i know i dont have as much time.

I guess i just dont see how going for 2 at the end makes it any more likely to get the 2 pt try.

It’s really as simple as getting 7 first means you still have a shot to tie with one more score.

Going for 2, and failing, on the first TD means you now need 2 scores and that can deflate a team.

Save the 2 until the second TD and use the momentum of having just scored 2 TDs to climb within 2 points.

i guess i could maybe see a team lose heart.

But i guess i am of the school that if some teams can come back from 35-3 deficits or the jets comback on monday night, that i dont really think a team being deflated is all that likely. I also know that i see guys being crazy motivated at the end of blowouts just for personal stats. To think they couldnt stay motivated in today's selfish game is a bit foreign to me.

i also think having your team come all the way back only to miss the 2 point conversion with 2 seconds on the clock, is about as deflating as it can get.

I would also expect the defense to be more tired later in the game.

Suppose after the 2nd TD, the offense goes for the 2-point conversion and commits a penalty. Now the team is forced to go for it from the 7, 12, or god forbid, the 17 yard line. It is clearly correct to go for two from the 2 yard line while they still can. The fact that they can play for two more scores also is important as was already pointed out. Teams have no idea how to use the 2-point conversion, which is amazing.

:goodposting: You turn a momentum building event (scoring a TD) into a momentum deflating event (they prevented us from scoring the 2-pointer and now we need to score twice).

One other thought...

If you need two scores with 4 minutes left, that could impact what your opponent does with his possession. Conceiveably, he could take three straight knees, run 2+ minutes off the clock and punt it away, knowing you have to go the length of the field, score, kick the onside kick, and score again, all in 2 minutes.

But the real reason is that most coaches play not to lose.....
