Simms in critical condition

Chris Simms is in critical condition at a Tampa hospital with unknown injuries.

Coach Jon Gruden said he hurt his ribs, but didn't seem to know about severity of the injuries. Simms took a couple hard hits to his midsection and looked dazed to us. Simms did impressively come back in to finish the game. Sep. 24 - 7:29 pm et

And seriously, for all the gay jokes and UT jokes he gets, and as awful as he was in the first two weeks, that dude showed a LOT of grit in the second-half today. Gotta salute him for that.

Hope he's ok.

Huh, didn't see the plays involved. Bruised ribs >> looking dehydrated >> critical condition could suggest a collapsed lung (pneumothorax) or maybe a ruptured spleen.

Thinking good thoughts for Simms right now.

Whats the definition of 'critical condition'? Is his life in danger?
Well wiki says:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Critical_condition

Medical conditions are used to describe a patient's conditions in a hospital. These terms are most commonly used by the news media and are rarely used by doctors in their daily business, preferring to deal with medical problems in greater detail.

A common progression might look like this:

* Critical condition – High risk of death within 24 hours

* Serious condition – reduced risk of death within 24 hours, but requiring frequent observation

* Stable condition – no major fluctuation in vital signs

* Good condition – little significant injury; patient may be discharged shortly

However, a range of different terms are used, including things like, grave condition, extremely critical condition, critical but stable condition, serious but stable condition, satisfactory condition, fair condition, and others. Definition varies between hospitals, and it is even possible for a patient to be upgraded or downgraded simply by being moved from one place to another, with no change in actual physical state.

OMG!!! There is a chance Chris Simms could die in the next 24 hours.

Oh no!! My prayers are with him.

* Critical condition – High risk of death within 24 hours
 :( My first reaction was collapsed lung, also, but critical condition for that? Hopefully it's a Bledsoe type thing where there is not much danger because of early detection.

I hope he will be ok. The kid has a ton of perseverance to have returned in the second half today, and try to get a win. I hope he holds on to that perserverance tonight in the hospital.

Yep a tension pneumothorax can develop more slowly than you'd think. When the pressure builds up to the point where blood flow is compromised, every second is critical.

how is rotoworld the only one reporting on this?? Not on ESPN, NBC, or any other websites.

Any other links to this?

Chris Simms is a good kid.

He's tough (despite popular opinion). He can handle this...but a little help from all of us couldn't hurt.

That was a heck of a shot he took on the TD, but I doubt anyone could see this coming.

Chris Simms will be in my family's prayers tonight.

At his postgame press conference, Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said of Simms: "He got hit early and he hurt his ribs. We don't know the extent of that, but he played hard today. He played tough and he showed a lot of grit. He really did. It is a credit to him.

"He is hurting right now, there is no question. He left the game. I don't know that it was because of his ribs, dehydration or both. He is a very sore and tired man right now, and I am proud of how he hung in there against a very good run defense.''

Charlotte Observer article

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Chris Simms was taken by ambulance to a Tampa hospital Sunday afternoon and is listed in critical condition, according to reports by several news sources.

There is no indication as to the cause of Simms' medical problems.

He was hospitalized a short time after the Buccaneers' last-minute 26-24 NFL loss to the Carolina Panthers.

Simms appeared to experience medical problems during the game. He was hit hard several times by Panthers defensive players and was taken out of the game in the third quarter. Announcers said Simms had suffered from dehydration in the 90-degree-plus heat and high humidity in Tampa.

But Simms, a former University of Texas quarterback whose father, Phil, also played in the NFL, returned to the game this afternoon and led Tampa Bay on a fourth-quarter scoring drive. Observers reported that he left the field on his own power after the game.

Simms was not available for interviews after the game, as he was being attended by trainers and doctors.

At his postgame press conference, Tampa Bay coach Jon Gruden said of Simms: "He got hit early and he hurt his ribs. We don't know the extent of that, but he played hard today. He played tough and he showed a lot of grit. He really did. It is a credit to him.

The TD his was bad, but the worst hit (at least, it seemed to me) was in the fourth quarter, on the 3rd and ten where he dumped it off to Alstott -- some Panther Dlineman just basically picked him up and bodyslammed him.

Brutal.

Thanks

Is Rattay the backup??
Does it matter? The guy's in critical condition... Makes me think of the thread earlier this week when people wished injuries and didn't care when they happened because football players make $$$$.
Guy asked a simple yes/no queation. He didn't make a joke of the potentially serious injury or even express any satisfaction over it. I think people are being a little bit too sensitive.

Peter King -

Simms is not in critical condition according to TB GM.

(NBC Football Night)

Peter King says Simms "definitely not" in critical condition per Bucs GM. Hopefully just complications from dehydration rather than the rumored ruptured spleen.

Per Peter King: Chris Sims is NOT in critical condition - so says the owner of the Bucs.

Just another over reaction by a reporter
