Sitting in jury-selection pool - ask me anything (1 Viewer)

This seems totally contradictory. You would "like to" serve on a jury and were "happy to get excused" when you had the chance. Doesn't make a lot of sense.
I tried to explain why I didn't want to serve on that particular case. Guy was losing parental rights because he couldn't pay child support from prison. Seems pretty cut and dried to me, but why would I want to be involved in that? Granted someone has to be because the felon wanted a jury trial, but someone not paying child support deserves to have parental rights removed.

Give me a typical criminal trial and I'll happily serve. Family court matters with a convicted felon are not something I want to fuss with.

For me, it's just participating the in the whole process regardless of the trial type. I like to see how the defense is mounted for the case and how the prosecutor attacks the case.

I think I posted this elsewhere but I was on a jury for this Fed trial. You absolutely do not want to EVER be on the wrong end of a US Attorney prosecution. The mountain of evidence that they had on this guy was crazy, the US attorney's absolutely nailed him.

It's as boring - so far - as you'd guess. I deferred it as long as I could, and now here I am.

Apparently they do expect to seat a jury later today...
Were you allowed to have your phone? I was just summoned for jury duty and I find it odd that they explicitly allow me to bring an iPad, tablet, or Laptop... but they are adamant that no cell phones are allowed. :kicksrock:

In the main waiting room, yes. And we could bring with us into court room but it had to be off.

Had jury duty 2 weeks before Christmas, showed up and the judge announced there were no jury trials that week. $6 for making an appearance. My juror number was 200 something. I would estimate 500 people showed up.

So far I've been summoned for jury duty 5 times in my life, and everytime it's gotten canceled on the morning I'm to report. Buncha plea bargaining criminals around here I guess...

I’ve been summoned twice

Once local city, all 4 cases settled or dismissed but the judge did give us a tour of the chambers and stuff.

2nd time I got selected for a county civil case on insurance fraud. It was an interesting experience and at a good time because I absolutely hated my job and was in the middle of job hunting anyway. But it took like 4 days for something that probably should have took 2 hours. I think we did lose a full day though because someone snuck a gun through security so they shut the building down that day

With my current workload though I feel like it would be a huge pain to serve any multi day trial. Would still do if required though

Got the apparently rare federal summons once, 300 people for only 1 trial that day. 50 were called to fill out a 10 page questionnaire, the rest of us did nothing. Was told it's unlikely that I'd be called back ever.

Had been summoned to the local courthouse in late 2019 and postponed to a shorter 4 day week in 2020. Better timing with work and lower odds of being called in as there are only 4 days in the week. I picked Good Friday week of 2020, second week of April. Covid canceled everything and got my credit for the year. :bowtie:

Made it to nearly voir dire once prior. The judge warned us that his trial was a 2 day harassment charge, if we didn't get picked for his jury, we'd go back into the pool and the trial next door was a 6 week malpractice case. Never seen so many people eager to get picked for jury duty :lmao:

Oh also got called in once to the main Los Angeles courthouse. The place was a zoo. Just getting through the metal detectors was an hour. Everyone was late. Got to the jury room and was told the computer screwed up and accidentally told everyone that was on call for the week that they were required all the same day. So instead of 200 people it was like 3000. They only asked the proper 200 to stay and everyone else got sent home but had to keep calling in in case they were really selected for another day. No one liked that. Nearly came to fisticuffs a few times it seemed.

I've been called a couple of times for jury service. All but one time I've been released before serving. I wasn't so lucky for a murder trial. I had a really low number and was the second person seated on the jury. While the process was interesting, I can't say I enjoyed the week+ I spent on that jury. I do not like admitting to myself that people like exist in our world. And a word to the wise: If the police every state that you are free to go... take them up on their offer. Do NOT sit there and keep yapping.

My wife was sat for a big time Fed trial. Laundry list of stuff, fraud, sexual harassment. She was very close to getting sequestered, but the dude realized he was totally screwed and somehow pled out the start of the second week. The entire jury pool rejoiced, as this one had some serious legs.

Just got my 4TH!!! summons in the mail today.

4?!?! Wtf?

Anyone been summoned this many times ?
In your lifetime?

I have probably been summoned 5 or 6 times in my lifetime (30+ years of being eligible)

ETA: Actually it has been more. I have had to go into the courthouse 5 or 6 times and probably had another 2 or 3 times when I just called in for the week and they didn't need me. Been selected to two juries. One DUI case (guilty) and one murder case (guilty) that lasted 2 months.

Sitting in the gathering room myself today. Gotta say. Pleased that you can bring your computer, cell phone, they have wifi and power. So kinda sorta like working from home. I remember the days you could bring a book and that's about it. So this is good.
