Skillsets (1 Viewer)

I always read things on here about skillsets but I have to admit that I really dont get it. (hopefully does not make me look too stupid) What makes a RB go from being very good one year to not that great the next or ever again. I would imagine that their skill set does not change that much. A few guys that come to mind are A Smith, S Gado, R Droughns.

Why is a guy like K Faulk not able to be an every down back. Same for S Slaton.

Why does J Charles's role not change when LJ is out even though he may be better then K Smith. (learned that last week in the Charles thread) Same goes for the Dallas Cowboy situation

Things like that are confusing me.

Usually it's either O-line issues or losing their explosiveness.

Maybe because they don't make those decisions.

Can Charles and Felix Jones run between the tackles? Can they pass-protect?

Offensive lines and the particular blocking schemes they employ, rule all for RB's. Easily the singlemost undervalued FF analysis is indepth breakdowns/rankings of offensive lines. A line can make the best RB in the NFL look "good", a good RB look mediocre and have a mediocre RB flipping burgers next year.

Regarding Jamaal Charles, Steve Slaton, etc. - it's because so much more goes into being an NFL RB than just running the ball. Wanna know why RB's transition so easily to NFL in "fantasy football" terms? Because all we care about is what they do when they are actually running with a football. But in NFL terms, one missed safety blitz from the edge and your QB is getting crushed. Us fantasy people don't care much about that little detail but NFL management sure does.
