My favorite Skip Caray moment, seven or eight years ago:

Andruw Jones is on third, and Rey Sanchez is at the plate, when Bobby Cox puts the squeeze on. The pitch comes in and Andruw starts heading home. Sanchez takes the pitch, no attempt to swing, nothing. Andruw slams on the brakes and is able to make it back to third, but just barely. So he's probably a little annoyed, and comes down the line a bit to have a word with Sanchez, who had obviously missed the sign for one reason or another.

Skip says, "So Andruw walks over to Sanchez, and is probably asking him, 'El understando senor?'"

 He was always going to be in the shadow of his old man, but he did solid work and I was a big fan.

Huh.

My favorite Skip moments were actually on the pregame call-in shows, when he would flip out because he was so sick of being asked to explain simple concepts like the infield fly rule. People began calling in to specifically push his buttons, because he would get so pissed off. Absolute hilarity.

:goodposting: I always liked his schtick of giving the hometowns of fans who caught foul balls.

 Are you sure you're not thinking of Ernie Harwell? He did that for years when he did Tiger games on WJR.

I enjoyed the one time he was interviewing Dale Murphy after a win in Wrigley and a drunk Cub fan was yelling "NO MORE PINK SHIRTS", since that was what he was wearing. He was pleading with Murph to help him out of it by talking quicker to finish the interview, but Murph looked clueless and didn't know what to do.

Never personally heard Harwell much, if at all. Quite possible this shtick was stolen.

I listened to Braves' games on the car radio driving home from work this past week and it was especially obvious the last few games that Skip was having trouble. He was often quiet, and his diction was thick and unclear at times.

There was no love lost between Milo Hamilton and Skip. I think Skip never forgave Milo for his comments or attitude about Harry after Harry died since Harry replaced Milo in Chicago. But Skip sure had a short fuse. The statements earlier regarding fans phoning in during the pre-game show to propose outlandish trades and whatnot served to tick Skip off; those callers knew how to get under his skin, whether intentional or not.

The local Braves affiliate here in Charleston SC still hasn't pulled the promos featuring Skip from airing. Someone will eventually catch on.

Sadly, he won't get his due. Yet, he was a smart, solid pro. Being Harry's son and Chip's dad will overshadow all else. But he was an instititution for decades in Atlanta.

Sad, sad day for this Braves fan.Until a couple of years ago Skip was welcomed into my home between 75-125 times a year. It was this way since about 1985 as I watched on TBS and, somtimes, listened on the radio. Unfortunately, TBS, MLB, PeachTree TV, SportSouth and Comcast made his visits with me much less frequent over the last couple of years as TBS had fewer and fewer games and my Comcast refuses to carry SportSouth.I loved Skip's dry humor particularly in the old days on TBS when he'd mercilessly ridicule the movie he'd have to read a promo for that was coming on TBS after the game. This season has sucked royally for the Braves and I didn't know what could possibly happen next to make it worse. Well, this sure does it.

"A lotta room in right-center, if he hits one there we can dance in the streets. The 2-1. Swung, line drive left field! One run is in! Here comes Bream! Here's the throw to the plate! He is...safe! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win! Braves win!...Braves win! They may have to hospitalize Sid Bream; he's down at the bottom of a huge pile at the plate. They help him to his feet. Frank Cabrera got the game winner! The Atlanta Braves are National League champions again!"

Ah, fond memories of the Pirates being denied a trip to the WS!! WMI --

It's plays like those that'll keep the memory of him alive for you. I'm like that with Herb Score who did Tribe games for many years (fortunately still with us). I have some of his calls on my iPOD for when I'm feeling nostalgic. Perhaps that's an option. :goodposting:

All very nice, unless you're a Pirates fan. There are still a few of us left.

Sid Bream left Leyland flat and stunned when he chose the Braves over remaining instead with the Pirates. He added insult to injury by scoring the decisive run and it's been all downhill for the Pirates since---their last winning season. It was Barry Bonds' (when he was trimmer) swan-song with the Pirates. He was always booed when he'd return to town because he couldn't throw out Bream at the plate. Had Bonds been on the juice in '92, he might have had the strength to do so.

Few remember the Braves were up 3-1 games in that series until the Bucs came back to even it and take a lead into the ninth.

I thought the Braves' win over the Bucs in '91 was much more impressive. Their pitchers shut down some major bats.

Anyway, Skip's great droll humor will be missed.
