Sleeper Rookie TE's in the 2007 NFL draft (1 Viewer)

It seems more than often there are sleeper rookie TE's drafted in the 3rd-7th rd NFL draft that makes a decent impact in the NFL.

These are some names that were drafted in the 3rd-7th rd of the NFL draft:

1985: Jay Novachek (6th rd)

1986: Brent Jones (5th rd)

1990: Shannon Sharpe (7th rd)

1991: Ben Coates (7th rd)

1992: Mark Chmura (7th rd)

1993: Frank Wycheck (7th rd)

1995: Byron Chamberlain (7th rd)

1996: Jay Riemersma (7th rd)

1999: Desmond Clark (7th rd)

2002: McMichael,Randy (4th rd)

2003: Jason Witten (3th rd)/Gates(undrafted)

2004: Chris Cooley (3th rd)

2005: Bo Scaife (6th rd) ??

2006: Colston(7th)/David Thomas(3rd)??/Owen Daniels (4th rd) ??

Scaife/Thomas/Daniels are still question marks depending on what they do in the future but the rest have had decent production.

Besides G Olsen and Z Miller who were drafted in the 1st and 2nd rd of the NFL draft, these are just some names to keep in mind when you're picking in the late rounds of your rookie draft:

Spaeth (3rd rd) - my huge sleeper-winner of the Mackey Award. Past winners include KWII/D Graham/Dallas Clark/Heath Miller. Just because the Steelers have Heath doesn't mean Spaeth won't be involved in the offense at some point. (Troupe/Scaife scenario??) Scouting reports view him as a blocker but he has great hands as well and becomes Roethlisberger's tallest target. Doesn't have the speed to be a deep threat-4.83 40 time

I don't really have much information on the others:

4th rd:

Scott Chandler San Diego

Martrez Milner Atlanta

5th rd:

Dante Rosario Carolina

Brent Celek Philadelphia

Kevin Boss NYG

7th rd:

Ben Patrick Arizona

Tyler Ecker Washington

Clark Harris Green Bay

Michael Allan KC

and then there's Legedu Naanee(5th rd pick), San Diego who's being tried out at the F-back spot(hybrid of H-back and TE). Early reports indicate he has great size and speed. Runs a 4.41 forty time

That Mackey Award looks like a who's who,of who's not. Graham/Clark/Miller?yawn.I think the best TE in this draft, was Zach Miller, and he goes to a team with an OC hell-bent on passing to the TE..

I think Clark Harris could become the next Bubba Franks. I don't think he's beating anyone down the seam, but he could be used quite a bit in the red zone.

hope this helps:Chandler - converted WR who could be interesting if Gates suffered a severe injury, but he also blocks like a converted WR.

Milner - terrific athletic talent with very spotty hands, but he comes from a program that has been churning out NFL TEs lately (Watson, McMichael, Pope)

Rosario - fast H-back type - worth watching

Celek - very average player with limited upside, but hard worker and tough

Boss - big upside here, but blocked by Shockey. Played basketball in college.

Link to our interview with Boss back in April

Patrick - loved this kid as an athletic passcatcher, apparently had some injuries that came out at the combine that caused him to fall. Lots of opportunity in Arizona, keep an eye on him.

We talked to Patrick at the Senior Bowl

And at the Shrine Game

Ecker - smooth pass catcher, but limited physically

Harris - plays too stiff for my liking, but lots of opportunity

Allan - huge athletic upside, sort of like a much rawer, inconsistent Tony Scheffler

I like Patrick a little bit. He's a good athlete who could eventually become the starter in Arizona. I don't view him as star material, but he could be pretty decent.

I've been waiting a long time for Carolina to develop a TE. I pimped Mike Seidman three years ago as a sleeper.

I like the way Rosario plays. He is cut out of the Cooley mold, and a true tough guy on the field. I think he'll scrap enough to make up for his size as a blocker. He should be about 250 this year. But he isn't very fast, and he isn't the hardest worker. He's more of a natural athlete than anything else.

TE is a prime example of the weakness of this class. I don't have high hopes for any of them.

for once i can talk first hand about a player

i am a season ticket holder for the UofD... and Patrick is very exciting to watch play... rarely saw him drop a ball, and he'd go up and get a ball if he had too.. of course he's playing against much weaker defenses, but i can see him making the transition to the nfl after a few years... has the hands and athletic skills, just needs to learn to block... saw him get beat often by not even close to nfl caliber defensive backs...
