It seems more than often there are sleeper rookie TE's drafted in the 3rd-7th rd NFL draft that makes a decent impact in the NFL.
These are some names that were drafted in the 3rd-7th rd of the NFL draft:
1985: Jay Novachek (6th rd)
1986: Brent Jones (5th rd)
1990: Shannon Sharpe (7th rd)
1991: Ben Coates (7th rd)
1992: Mark Chmura (7th rd)
1993: Frank Wycheck (7th rd)
1995: Byron Chamberlain (7th rd)
1996: Jay Riemersma (7th rd)
1999: Desmond Clark (7th rd)
2002: McMichael,Randy (4th rd)
2003: Jason Witten (3th rd)/Gates(undrafted)
2004: Chris Cooley (3th rd)
2005: Bo Scaife (6th rd) ??
2006: Colston(7th)/David Thomas(3rd)??/Owen Daniels (4th rd) ??
Scaife/Thomas/Daniels are still question marks depending on what they do in the future but the rest have had decent production.
Besides G Olsen and Z Miller who were drafted in the 1st and 2nd rd of the NFL draft, these are just some names to keep in mind when you're picking in the late rounds of your rookie draft:
Spaeth (3rd rd) - my huge sleeper-winner of the Mackey Award. Past winners include KWII/D Graham/Dallas Clark/Heath Miller. Just because the Steelers have Heath doesn't mean Spaeth won't be involved in the offense at some point. (Troupe/Scaife scenario??) Scouting reports view him as a blocker but he has great hands as well and becomes Roethlisberger's tallest target. Doesn't have the speed to be a deep threat-4.83 40 time
I don't really have much information on the others:
4th rd:
Scott Chandler San Diego
Martrez Milner Atlanta
5th rd:
Dante Rosario Carolina
Brent Celek Philadelphia
Kevin Boss NYG
7th rd:
Ben Patrick Arizona
Tyler Ecker Washington
Clark Harris Green Bay
Michael Allan KC
and then there's Legedu Naanee(5th rd pick), San Diego who's being tried out at the F-back spot(hybrid of H-back and TE). Early reports indicate he has great size and speed. Runs a 4.41 forty time
