Smith & Dorsett Don't Believe Barber can Handle a Full Load --

Tue Sep 2, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com

The Dallas Morning News reports former Cowboys great RB Emmitt Smith, the NFL's all-time leading rusher, said if RB Marion Barber III has to carry the ball for four quarters for the entire year, "There's no way he can handle it." "I think he spends a lot of energy that may not be necessary," Smith said when he attended Cowboys practice this spring. "For a starting back, I'm all about putting your heart into it, but you're doing a lot of kicking, running up, bucking and you're exerting a lot of energy. We need you for four quarters. And I'm going to say 'we' because I'm a Cowboy, too. We need you for four quarters." Hall of Fame RB Tony Dorsett called Barber a diamond in the rough. "He can make a run that can get the crowd involved here at Texas Stadium and get his teammates revved up as well," Dorsett said. "I like this guy. I like him a whole lot. My only concern is that this is a very physical league. "When you take a lot of hits over a period of time, it takes its toll on you. I just hope he becomes a little wiser and smarter about some of the hits he takes."

See also, Brandon Jacobs.

I dont see anything in either of those 2 HOFers comments that seem alarming or offer anything anyone didnt already know. The man runs hard, plays hard, he'll get his spells, he'll take his shots, but he's built like a bull. I dont think he's going to have a particularly long career, but while the man is running, he's giving ya all he's got. I wouldnt worry one bit if I were a Cowboy fan or a Barber owner.

Anyone who watches him run can see that he treats every single rush attempt like it's the end of the line for him. He certainly is missing a gear come the second half...hence Felix Jones. If Felix can take care of business, Marion should have no trouble giving the 'Bows 15-20 extremely hard runs per game.

I'm sure MBIII will learn to take a couple to the sideline once he takes a couple of good hits.

I'm not changing my value of him over this....

Dallas has a very good RB stable from top to bottom. Barber is solid and I really liked what I saw of Jones and Choice this preseason.

I've got him projected for almost exactly 20 touches a game. 275 carries, 50 catches.

Every time this guy has toted it 20 or more times in a game, he's given the Cowboys an average of 110 yards and a td. He'll be effective. Can he take the punishment and stay healthy? We'll see, but I'm not going to change the way I see anything based on the thoughts of former players, no matter how great.

Well, this was my first draft pick (#6). I passed up Addai to get him, figuring Barber had more upside. Now I admit I'm worried about these comments. What do you guys think? Is Barber going to be the 20 carry stud that I hope and expect?

Extremely unrealistic. 275 carries is probably his ceiling, or even more than his ceiling. And 50 catches would be more than he's ever had, and they added a better pass catching RB in the draft. All signs point to Barber's receptions dropping off dramatically.I say 280 touches is realistic.

-- No RB Rotation in Dallas, But... --

Sat Sep 6, 2008 --from FFMastermind.com

The Dallas Morning News reports with RB Marion Barber the starting running back, the Cowboys plan on giving rookie RB Felix Jones a few carries. Last season, the Cowboys used a rotation of RB Julius Jones and Barber. But with Jones in Seattle, the Cowboys will not employ a rotation with Barber and RB Felix Jones. The Cowboys plan on getting Barber established at the beginning of the game before using Felix Jones. "We already had that discussion," running back coach Skip Peete said. "I told [barber], 'Hey you are the go-to guy, but they're going to be times when I'm going to say, Felix is in.' He was fine with that."

50 catches is way too high

He had 44 catches last year, right? Fifty doesn't seem outrageous. Plus, he had 10 catches against Detroit last year. Extrapolate those over a full season and he has 160 catches. :hifive:

Settle down, settle down. At his preferred pace Barber may not see 10 quality years in the league, but I feel very confident he'll be money over the next two (2) or three (3). He's running behind the biggest offensive line in the league so he'll mostly be delivering hits on DB's rather than receiving them from LB's. He runs low--unlike Jacobs--and since he's looking to punish, he's always ready.Stop sweating...

That's a bold statement, Switz. Barber had 248 touches last year where he had six (6) games with less than 15 touches total, three (3) of which were ten (10) or less. He's touching the rock 20 times a game this year for a total closer to 320. Felix is for real, but he'll best serve the 'Boys this year on special teams and as a change of pace guy--he won't have Julius's 190 touches out of the backfield as a rookie, period.

And I say 325. You do realize it's less than 3 more touches a game. We just seem to have different opinions on how Jones affects his touches.

3 touches adds up quickly. Early in the season barber is going to see a heavy load, but expect we'll see of become a situation where Barber gets early carries, and Jones comes in for the second half and runs circles around the tired defense. I have no doubts early on all the Barber supporters will be crowing about how many carries he's getting etc. But as Felix learns more of the playbook the more he will take touches from Barber.

That's a possibility. I just don't see him getting as many touches as a rookie as Jones did in his 4th year with the team. That's my take, I realize yours is different, and I'm not looking to go back and forth about it. I think we had a similar disagreement about Willie Parker and Reshard Mendenhall, so I guess it's safe to say you see the rookies making an impact sooner than I do.
