Snake in back yard (1 Viewer)

Did not feel I deserved my own snake thread.

Yesterday, while running on a paved trail through the woods, I missed stepping on a copperhead by about 6 inches; I always lean hard right on the paved trail because of reckless bicycle riders. Copperhead was just on the edge of the trail and giving serious consideration to making like a chicken. Caught it out of the corner of my eye just as I ran past. Good-looking snake too - looked like something straight out of a Barnes and Noble book.

There was a 3 foot bull snake out in front of our office yesterday. You always have to look twice with bull snakes because they look like a western rattlesnake, which is the only poisonous species in the area. They also attempt to impersonate the western rattler when cornered, coiling up and beating their tail against the ground to give the appearance of rattling.

We sold our first home back in December, but every summer we'd see about 5 or 6 big snakes (5 to 6 footers), and a bunch of smaller snakes (less than 3 feet). The bull/rat snakes variety, so nothing dangerous. Certainly wish our dog would have gone after them like your bulldog.

Oh, and cringe-worthy factoid: The person who bought our house called our realtor a couple of weeks after the closing and said they were tearing down some drywall in the garage and found 18 snake skins in just the little area they were working with...god knows how many there are inside the walls of the rest of the house.

I don't know. I would think that a thick, 6 foot snake could give a smaller dog a good battle.

No way could a bullsnake handle anything more than maybe a teacup chihuahua, and I give snakes a lot of credit.A pug would dominate a 6 foot bull snake.

I've always been fascinated with snakes, but good golly do they creep me out.

When I was a kid on our farm in Iowa, I encountered a culvert beneath one of our field entrances full of garter snakes tangled together to keep warm for the winter. Must have been 400-500 snakes easily. Still haunts my dreams to this day.

That is a monster garter snake in the OP Shiznitttt.

I think they're cool creatures and they really do a great job at keeping pests away. Growing up, I've had garter and hognose snakes as pets, but nothing too big or dangerous like a python.

Just walked into our driveway and came across a legit 4' eastern black ratsnake. Very cool.

We've only been here since December but it seems our yard is someplace Marlin Perkins would be right at home. Skinks, hawks, hummingbirds, chipmunks and snakes recently.

That type of snake has ball cancer venom. Highly poisonous. Check yourself and your dog. Best way to tell is to taste your own pee and report back.
