SNL is Friggin' Horrible! Except when Timberlake is hosting. (4 Viewers)

That Pryor episode was pretty amazing.  Samurai hotel guy... Word association, dead honkey...  the book about being a white guy.

Seemed stale compared to current stuff, but it's amazing for a show that was aired 30 years ago.

Didn't audition for Michaels. Everybody quit the show after '79-80 and NBC, in its wisdom, just looked down the rolls and hired the only person left with a producer credit to run the show. that was Jean Doumanian, an AP who booked the host/band and a person with the same level of understanding for comedy that Trump has for subtlety. I told the story before here so i wont go on but they key was that, as an underdog from mere radio, i turned the tables by making my bit about how hiring wikkid for SNL would achieve the end of comedy and then performing what that would be like (using what few imitations i could do to have the Marx Bros running around just being  irritating). What SNL writers who were there i was able to talk to later said it was a callback bit, but my agent had his call log framed of the # of times he called Ms Doumanian where she replied that wikkid doesn't want to work for SNL cuz it would end comedy. Such was the depth of her comic understanding. She lasted 11 eps, went on to produce several Woody Allen pictures - y'know, the ones that weren't funny - and now, in one of the great "hell-on-earth" scenarios, gives lectures on the art of comedy which are mostly about how she 'discovered' Eddie Murphy. nufced

I quit. There was a movie on, then the wonderfully-talented-but-underwonderful Rhiannon Giddens was on ACL. Blipped over a couple times to see a li'l Lin-Maunuel but i quit. done -

I quit early last season and haven't watched one since. I missed very few episodes over its entire run but was just done with it.

Don't miss it at all.

 
Wanted to do what you did. Certainly turned off a bunch of em early last year. Felt i had to give the old man one more shot but when the very 1st sketch of the new season was a throwaway I knew they wouldnt be going anywhere that mattered. SNL doesnt always have to be the top of funny but, as an ol fart, i needed it to be a cultural touchstone and theyre not even close to diong that anymore. Now that i think of it - not sure this gen is all that down with making fun of itself. Its denizens, yes, the culture, maybe not. Truth is too relative now to nail down for attack or sumn.

 
I think Manuel did a good job.  I enjoyed his monologue, and he had a couple of decent sketches.  But overall, the show was kind of a dud for me.  

 
For me, the best part of Saturday's show was the Crucible Cast Party digital short, which I imagine only appealed to high school theater nerds or those of us who married one. 

I cringed when the monologue went into a parody of My Shot, but he ended up killing that.  So what do I know?

 
Honestly...how many shows are going to have Manuel joke about how he can't get them tix to Hamilton.

Hamilton has become the "Tickle Me Elmo" of Broadway at this point...I'm just tired of hearing about it.

I don't know what it'll take to make me delete the show off my DVR schedule though...DVR has made it so much more watchable.

But sadly, I don't really get "up" to watch it anymore...honestly, it's like some strange tradition or ritual.

It'll sit on my DVR sometimes for days until I have run out of everything else to watch...and even then...I just watch on TV in the background while I surf the internet on my laptop.
 

Lorne really needs to just move on already...let someone else take the wheel.

And damn...we get it...you're all full tilt in the Hillary camp.

It was great. That's gotta be from Hanks. His own SNL prime was when the deconstructors were just blowin #### up and putting it on. Hanks had to have prodded the writers for summadat.

Hanks facial expressions were a riot, he has done so many great dramas it is easy to forget his range and that he came up doing comedy.  

"How much David Pumpkins is in this?"

"Uhm, 73 out of 100 floors."

'WHY DID YOU GO ALL IN ON DAVID PUMPKINS!"

"Hey, look, it's 100 floors of frights, they not all gonna be winners."

After mocking him, the dude looked like he was having a real heart attack! :)

I'd noticed that.  He was practically invisible last night, though.

I know it won't go viral, but my favorite sketch from last night was the Sully one.  I've heard Baldwin say he greatly prefers doing sketches like that to the stuff he's more famous for, like Schwetty Balls.  (IIRC, his favorite SNL sketch of his is a late 80s one that takes place in a diner, where Jan Hooks gives a master class in sketch comedy from behind the counter)

At first that one was headed to the same tier as the Larry David "Can A ##### Get A Donut?" sketch from last year, but wow, what a finish.

Funny, and surprisingly one of the more insightful commentaries about the campaign.  Gotta give a lot of credit to Hanks there; no member of the cast could have delivered a character like that.

What's changed is the delay between applying for a name and them approving it.  By the time they'd approved my "Jessep's Neighbor" alias, it was no longer useful.  In the old days you'd get approved in minutes.  Heck, even right after the marathon bombing there were about 10 different derivations of Uncle Ruslan up pretty quickly.

Yeah, I think the only place he appeared was as one of the dancing skeletons.

The Sully sketch was also one of the ones that I preferred.  It is a more interesting premise for the past couple of years.

More so than the rinse-repeat of the singing halloween family (same as kyle/vanessa as sister-brother in the campground and the escorts sketch), david pumpkins (same as Kevin Roberts, among others), and even the weekend update characters where I think we could use a little more novelty.

The reason I bring it up is that I heard it mentioned on a podcast that last week's Burger King sketch must have been one of these product placements, since it didn't make fun of BK in any way and also largely described many of the products.

Commercials will soon be interrupting Saturday Night Live less often — because they will sometimes be mixed right in with the sketches instead.

NBC says the long-running live comedy show is cutting its commercial load by 30% — two commercial breaks per episode — as it makes a modest push into content created in collaboration with advertisers.

That push will mean six opportunities per year for the show's advertisers to work with its writing staff to create original work that promotes their brands. 

It remains to be determined whether the cast members will also be part of the projects, said NBC Universal's chairman of advertising sales and client partnerships, Linda Yaccarino.

The move is in line with a growing trend in the TV industry to cut down on actual commercials in favor of so-called branded content and product placement, thus ensuring that the advertising will stay with shows as they are streamed online.  

That's especially important for SNL and other late-night comedy shows that are increasingly viewed the next day in the form of online clips.

"When you get connected contextually to the right piece of content and you're able to travel with it across platforms, it becomes that much more powerful," Yaccarino told Mashable. 

But Yaccarino doesn't like to use phrases like "branded content" and "product placement" to describe what SNL is doing — even though that's essentially what it amounts to. 

"We're really not calling it branded content at all," she said. "The reason I say that is that it's a very big broad over-used industry term." 

The limited nature of the effort is meant to keep advertiser control from diluting the SNL brand.

"It really speaks to how discreet and selective these opportunities are," Yaccarino said. "This is really our first gift to our audience, the continuity of having less commercial time, and on just select few occasions we will have this original content developed with our advertisers."

Depending on how the content is received, Yaccarino says, she is expecting that similar models will be used across more NBC shows.

"It just makes complete sense," she says.

I feel like this needs Baldwin to bring back Jack Donaghy in a sketch that explains "product integration" to the cast and writers.

I wondered if Moynihan co-wrote that one.  He's so good at those single beats right when the camera cuts to him.  And he's also sharp enough to know putting Kenan in the elevator to react to both the frights and the customers is going to sell a couple extra laughs, too.

About 5-6 times for me, at least, just as funny even knowing the pay off. I'm not deleting it so I can continue to rewatch, with Black Jeopardy, which I agree with you about (...my Cecil is named Jimmy, and he fixed my refrigerator, my air conditioner and my cat.).

I stopped watching years ago, and only resumed recently for the cold open debates, especially Baldwin (actually thought the first two were funnier), and to a lesser extent, the news. I was almost going to fast forward to the news, but since Hanks was on, checked it out in the hope they would up their game that week. They did. 

Even the last skit about the Hanks as Ron Howard hosted pet videos was pretty funny.

Maybe because I haven't been following for a long time (see above), I didn't appreciate Kenan. With Hanks, he was the co-star of my two favorite skits, Black Jeopardy and David Pumpkins. Brilliant work, my new favorite cast member (I should say, after Baldwin).

He's a gifted reactor.  Has been since he was a kid.  (He did a couple of sketch comedy shows on Nickelodeon as a kid, and was in the Mighty Ducks sequels). And he's excellent at pacing sketches and steering them towards what is working live.  He's often cast as game show and talk show hosts to let him react and direct traffic.  I enjoy him a lot as Steve Harvey hosting Family Feud sketches that usually have nine people on the stage.  And it's a retired sketch now, but I loved him as the host of "What's Up With That?", ostensibly a panel talk show but always degenerated into a circus, sometimes with the entire cast, the host, and a couple writers passing through at some point.

 
Yea...not sure why Keenan doesn't get more love...he's not the big personality but he's no wallflower.

The guy always seems to be solid at whatever his role.

:lmao:  That implies a lot more range than there really is

He's great though.  Was pretty hilarious in those children's shows too.. I'd crack up despite myself and have to try and play it all cool with the fam.  All That from the mid-90's with Kenan & Kel plus Amanda Bynes who before losing her marbles was a natural too.. more laughs packed in those shows than the last few SNL seasons..

this is sweet.  i am definitely interested in seeing what cumberbatch does (even if I'm not sure how good he will be) and I am ####### psyched for Chappelle.

This should be some really good creative energy/inspiration.  will be sad if the writers can't get it done with these guys.

 
I pray regularly for Chappelle to recommit to comedy. We need him, he needs us & i happen to have the perfect format for an HBO comedy show for him.
