So how much trouble am I in (vehicle sale tax Ohio)? (1 Viewer)

My wife's grandmother had a stroke and can't drive anymore.  My car basically died.  Wife's grandmother gave us her car, let's say value around $7,000.  On the title we put "gift" since it was a gift, and did not have to pay any sales tax.

Shortly after, rest of wife's family threw a bit of a stink about the situation, so we ended up giving wife's grandmother $7,000 for the car.

Wife's grandmother gets sales audit from the DMV and puts the purchase price of the car as $7,000.

So......when I got the title and registered it, it shows gift, and I did not pay any sales tax.  Now wife's grandmother sent in form showing I paid $7,000.

How much trouble am I in?   I sort of expect to pay a fine, no idea how much.

What's the play?  Just wait?  Or call them and try and avoid any fines or trouble, and just pay the sales tax?

Call the DMV and explain just what you wrote. Pay the sales tax and sleep easy.

Ever see "A Bronx Tale"? C gets all pissed about some loser owing him $20 for weeks, #####es about needing to chase him down for it, while the guy just runs from him. Sonny, ever the wise man, reminds him that for a mere $20, C has gotten the kid out of his life forever. He'll never ask for money again, he'll never annoy him again. "You got off cheap", Sonny says.

You, on the other hand, paid $7K for the privilege of not getting your wife's family out of your life forever.

Hope grandma gets well soon.

Actually I am very happy with the purchase and saved about 5 grand buying this car off her as opposed to buying it from anywhere else.

That said, I would have paid a couple extra grand to never hear from almost all of her family again.

When you register a vehicle in Texas they'll make you pay tax on the higher of the FMV or the sales price. Stops all the cute "I bought this for a dollar" claims.

I don't know Ohio law, but in Michigan they don't charge tax on used cars if you sell them to family. Maybe you are in the clear.

So how on Earth do people sell cars when they need a lot of work?  Seems like they will have to sell for peanuts.

Too late now, but why couldn’t you just “gift” the $7000 back to grandma and keep the stupid govt. and the relatives who are already queuing up to scavenge her jewelry like a bunch of vultures out of it?

The play should have been to give $1000 to 7 various members of your wife's family.  This way they get what they ultimately wanted and cut out the middle woman (grandmother) and you don't get stuck with the sales tax.

Hey Ghostguy...

Watch out for your cornhole, bud

Good lord your wife's family sound like a bunch of jerk faces.
Agreed. Not their car to put up a stink about. It would suck to be part of that family. My FIL gave my oldest his car when he couldn’t drive before he passed. No big deal. My FIL lived with us and my son is the oldest grandkid and just got his license. My son helped him get dressed while he lived with us and lots of other things. One of my wife’s sister suggested he give it to my son.

Not really meant for this to focus on wife's family.  I know they suck. They have always sucked.

Just wondering if anyone ever knew of this happening (has to be Ohio) where someone was caught "lying" on the sales price, and what the consequences were.

Except you weren’t lying. The deal was changed afterward. Go in and tell them the story you told us like was said above.

Then try to post from Leavenworth after you get out of the hole. GL  :clyde:
