So is Coles Still Averaging around 10 yds/catch? (1 Viewer)

Moss beats Coles in every category, even first downs.
I give limited credence to this years stats - let's see how Moss would fair with Brooks throwing to him for the year!
How about the year before and the year before that..Moss is a better WR hands down..Trade Coles and move on

This is not even a fair analysis at this point - Coles had a injured weak armed Chad, a 45 yr old couch potato and a 3rd string QB that would probably not make most teams - throwing him the ball this year. Jerry Rice in his prime would not put up quality numbers with this offense.

Give Coles a mulligan year IMO due to train wreck.

BTW - he looks healthy to me - great acceleration on grabbing that TD pass....that he got boned on in the reversal!!!
Would it be more fair to compare Moss this year to Coles last year?

Each of them had a year with Brunell. How did they do?2004 Coles, with the Redskins, 16 games

Moss has helped this team a lot, but I do believe there are many other reasons for their improved offensive success. The Oline looks better this year and just having one more year for the players to learn Gibb's system.

I agree with all of that. But it's pretty inescapable that Coles is 10-11 ypc receiver, and that Moss is a constant deep threat. Watching Washington last year was painful ---- their receivers were just never open deep. This year it seems that in some games there's just no one on the opposing team who can cover Moss deep. He's routinely open deep.

Moss getting open has rejuvenated the run game. And Portis running well has opened up the passing game. Moss gets credit for some of the difference in their performance this year, as do the O-line and the additional year of familiarity with the system.

Washington Post article

Without running back Clinton Portis, wide receiver Santana Moss believes there is no way he would be about to complete the best regular season of his career, and without Moss, Portis doubts he would be on the cusp of breaking the Washington Redskins' franchise single-season rushing mark. At various times this season, the presence of one of the Pro Bowlers has made life significantly easier for the other, and now, with both in top form, Washington is one win from its first playoff appearance since 1999.

Both Moss and Portis are less than 40 yards from breaking the Redskins' single-season marks for receiving and rushing yards, respectively, with just tomorrow's game in Philadelphia remaining..................

..........................The play of Portis and Moss has complemented one another and forced defenses to adjust their tactics. Because the Redskins lacked a deep passing game in 2004, defenses stacked the line against Portis early this season. But Moss's torrid start resulted in safeties paying special attention to him, eventually limiting his downfield gains at a time when the running game was sputtering.

The retort about Bollinger playing QB for the Jets is irrelevant as to Coles' ypc standing alone. With or without Bollinger, Coles still has the lowest ypc for a WR on his own team. That was the original thrust of this thread, which was begun when Jets fans kept insisting that the 'Skins were stupid for dumping Coles (who had so many catches last year) for Moss. As a 'Skins fan, I'm ecstatic about Moss but I agree you can't compare the two statistically side by side very well because of the awful QB situation on the Jets. I only compared Cooley early today to Coles to illustrate the original point: Coles' ypc is down around TE territory, and that part hasn't changed from last year to this. Again, I don't hate Coles. I just thought people were too easily dismissing 'Skins fans' observations about the decline in his play since his foot injury.
