So what are we expecting out of Cutler this week? (1 Viewer)

Is this going to be a typical rookie QB scenario...run, run, run and only pass when you have to? Or does Cutler have the skill to run a similar gameplan as they were using with Jake?

I expect the Bronco's to take a couple of shots deep this week with Cutler. I am going to go out on a limb and project Cutler for 225 yards and a pair of touchdowns 1 of them being a 30+ yarder to Javon Walker.

:goodposting: Keeping in mind that they're playing Seattle, I think Cutler will have to throw deep a couple times. I'll go 200/2/2

I think that's probably a fair assessment, although given Seattle's propensity to blitz and Cutler's inexperience with NFL blitz packages I think we will also see at least one forced fumble.

I agree with all of this analysis.

Of course there's no knowing until the real bullets start firing, but Cutler appears very NFL-ready.

I don't expect to see any floundering rookie errors.

I'd really like to say I'll have him for somewhere around 250/3, but I think that might be a little bit of wishful thinking.

To say the least though, I expect him to deliver on Sunday and be a viable fantasy QB option.

I think most would agree with that statement.

I'll be starting the Seahawks D. I'm willing to gamble that Cutler has some problems in his first ever NFL regular season game, and that Shanahan will stay somewhat conservative and lean on the run, which is still the strong suit of the Bronco offense. I don't see a lot of points being put up by Denver's O this week.

I think most Denver faithful are expecting Tony Romo. I think you are in for a letdown. Although I think Cutler becomes a really good player in time.

On a side note, does anyone else think Cutler always looks like he's stoned when he speaks? His vocabulary is fine, but he has the charisma of a wet paper towel.

Could you explain why you think so? Or is it just a gut feeling? Also, it is my understanding that DEN's backfield is still pretty banged up. Don't you think that will force them to lean a little more on Cutler?

This will be the game plan until or if Seattle can take it away from Denver. Seattle's run defense is not very good, you may remember Gore going over 200 vs. them just a couple of weeks ago. If Tatum Bell is healthy, expect him to have triple figures on the ground.Shanny is a smart coach, the game plan will be to run the ball and play solid defense. He will take a look at film and see what exactly caused Hasslebeck to play so poorly in the 1st half of that football game vs. Green Bay and try and copy it and create short fields for his rookie QB to work with.

I'm not certain, but fairly confident that Hasselbeck's 1st half struggles were due to him reacclimating his mechanics to full game speed. I'm not sure it would be relevant to incorporate it here.At the same time though, I agree Shanahan will bring out a gameplan that likely will lead to a convincing win. We'll see how rusty the Seahawks are though....

The Seahawks have a fast D, and while they're in the lower half of the league in passing yards given up they put lots of pressure on the QB (they're third in sacks in the NFL with 36). That looks like it could cause a problem for a QB in his first start, though Cutler may be good enough to handle it. Seattle is middle of the pack against the run so far and Tatum is playing this week and it looks like all the other Denver rbs are good to go. Even in a normal week I think Denver emphasizes the run in their game plan, with the rookie out there at qb and a long term view towards his development I don't think Shanny gameplans with making Cutler make big plays in mind. Cutler may make big plays anyway, but I wouldn't think it's a given. If for some reason Seattle starts a shoot out, then things may change. But for now I think both teams score in the mid to low 20's at best and it's a somewhat "quiet" game offensively.

It's pretty standard for first year QBs to struggle in their first season and especially in their first game. I don't see why Cutler would be an exception. As far as leaning on the running game that would be a no-brainer at least in the beginning. If Seattle runs up the score obviously that might change, but I don't expect Cutler to be throwing a ton unless he has too.

What production range do you see him finishing in?

Well Seattle averages giving up 217 passing a game. So I'd figure him for right around there, say 220 or so. I think Shanny will try and get him a TD at some point given the opportunity, so I'd give him 1 TD. And maybe 1 interception.Of course Cutler could go Dan Marino on all our asses and I'll be left starring on the bend over channel for putting the Seahawks D out there. But I think he's kept under wraps this week by his own coaching staff for the most part.ETA: It turns out my projections are very close to what FBG's has, if that's of any interest (I hadn't looked at them prior to this), and that they have Cutler just in the bottom half of QBs this week - he wouldn't be a starter in leagues of 16 teams or less, but it's close. I hope that's not giving away too much paid content.

the one thing in Cutler's defense:

Vegas LOVES him.

denver is laying 4 tomorrow..sounds to me like a sucker game, i.e., everyone will think its a high

line and bet with seattle..

any time you have a rookie QB laying wood ( more than a FG) it usually means that Vegas thinks big things...

the over is what, 40 or 41? thats high too, again.considering a rookie QB making his pro debut..

I know Denver is at home, but still, 4 pts is a lot..and considering that Seattle is a good team, with everyone back healthy, and they're a 4 pt dog?! something doesn't feel right about that line..

take denver laying the wood!

and watch cutler go for about 270 and 2-3 tds..

so you think "shanny" is going to make it snow heavily and also make hasselbeck rusty from not having played in the last four weeks? Amazing!

My gut keeps telling me he's going to come up big... this is some interesting theory here.It seems almost like the consensus is that we can temper our expectations to 220-1, with a possibility of 270-3.... that sounds like a pretty good deal for a WW pickup.

I'm hoping for the best. McNabb owner with Carr as my other option. I like Cutler's chances better than Carr's vs. Oakland. I could be outsmarting myself, but, I'm gonna roll the dice with Cutler on Sunday night. Should be fun to watch.

I'm hoping for 1-2 TD's, hopefully a long one. Maybe 215-230 yards passing.

I heard it through the vine that Skeletor addressed his team on Friday "Look...Elway isn't walking through that door and Terrel isn't walking through that door!"
That speech sure worked for Pitino.

I have Vick...certainly can't bring myself to start Cutler over him, but I'm glad I snagged Cutler away from my competition anyway. I think he could have a Volek-in-2004-type game or two down the stretch here.

I expect a typical rookie in his first NFL game meltdown. I am surprised to see Seat is the underdog in this game. I have placed a wager on the Seat ML. :football:

I'm a McNabb owner going back and forth between my various crappy options. My impression of the Denver offense is that when the running game is going there are a lot of easy read plays for a QB--like those bootleg plays where the QB throws or runs depending on what the D gives them...gives him half a field to read and moves the pocket away from the rush. If Jay has enough athleticism to run those combined with his touch on the deep ball, I think he could be well above average for a rookie in his first start.

Denver still has deep playoff run aspirations, so I don't think they'd be sticking him in there if they didn't think he could win right away. That doesn't mean they're right, but that's obviously what they think.

Cutler: 245, 2 pass TD's, one rush TD, 1 INT, 1 fumble, 35 yards rushing.

This kid is the blueprint gold standard for running the roll out zone blocking scheme Denver runs. In a week I need a win to make the playoffs, Plummer and Pennington go to the bench, and I roll the dice with my top ranked QB from last year's draft. :scared:

I'm going back and forth between Cutler and Kitna or Delhomme. I've got Kitna in now, but at New England is never good. I just see the Lions playing catchup.

I think Cutler will be a solid option this week. But Shanny may play this a little conservative, unless they get down big. I'm thinking 215 and 1 td 1 int and 25 yds rushing. Mike or Tatum Bell gets 2 tds on the ground....Broncos put up 24 pts.

This thread is really building my confidence in starting Cutler this week in a few of my leagues.... I really see no glaring reason to put him on the bench.

My guess is Shanahan was looking over his football team just like us and figured he needed another QB, and thought there was no reason to keep Cutler on the bench...

 I too am considering Cutler with Carolina Jake Delh. stinking up the joint and David G Jax playing conserv. I don't think I have a lot to lose.... It's sad when a QB who has never played a NFL game seems like a Viable option.... Just my Gut that's it and a little influence from Black Eye Joes Weekly 13 Prognostications..

I think a lot of you guys are buying into Cutler way to easy.

They run the ball all night long and keep Seattle's offense off of the field.

As for Cutler I see him being sacked 5 times and two INT"S.

Any TD passes need to go to Walker. :bag:

3 INTs and a fumble in the first half, then bring back Jake in the 2nd half where he puts up 200 and 2 TDs to make a run at a "fantastic finish", but falling just short.

SEA 28-24

As I mentioned, Seattle is a speed defense, that kind of thing plays right into their hands. When faced with another speed defence (the Chargers), Shannahan rightly dropped that part of the playbook out. You don't go wide on Seattle, you go right at them. Also was the bootleg something Cutler was good at already? I honestly don't know.

I watched CUtler a lot in college. He is very mobile and the bootleg will be something he would be able to run with ease. Whether Seattle defends it well or not is another story. As far as Cutler's ability to run it, there is no question....

Am sitting here finishing up a research paper and felt like checking the score of the game... then I see Jay Cutler's money line:

1/3 1yd, 0/0

Midway through the 2nd quarter....

I'm sure he'll finish above that, but :lmao:

Woo boy would it be funny to see him finish with under 10 attempts.

JAVON WALKER PERSPECTIVE.....Well..Javon Walker owners beware. 1 target in the first half, and Madden saying that Smith is his go to guy. Although I still believe that the decision to go with Cutler is the right thing to do for the franchise, I will be VERY hesitant to play any of the Denver receiving corp from here out. Removing Plummer is the RIGHT thing to do from a franchise perspective (long term) no matter what the result of tonights game may be. I say this because I do not believe that Plummer could ever lead the Broncos to the promised land (Super Bowl). So...looking to the future, Shanahan is doing the right thing.. BUT.. since we dwell in a fantasy land..ya better look elsewhere if you counted on Walker.

You were right about this, but someone forgot to tell Shanny because he still ran them. Madden was saying he didn't know why they were calling those plays since they're usually more effective when teams start selling out to stop the inside run game. I was yelling at the TV saying, "they're trying to give him easy reads, not that it's working." This is the point where my wife sighs and leaves the room. All in all it looked like a rookie in his first game.

:lmao: I know exactly what you mean. Madden is king of the unfinished thought - I'm pretty sure he knows what you're saying, he just leaves it unsaid, leaving his final judgement on the table, which more often than not is correct. In this case he's probably aware of why they tried to do it, but he's also aware that it wasn't going to work, which he figures they should know as well, thus his statement. The thing with the wife though is classic!
