Some Advice for those who Draft Peyton Manning (1 Viewer)

By all accounts Peyton Manning is someone who you plug into your lineup and leave there for the whole season, regardless of match up. However, for the bye week fill in, I would suggest TB quarterback Josh Freeman. His bye week match up is quite favorable:

Week 7: at home vs. St. Louis Rams

Also, because Manning sometimes gets rested very late in the regular season if the Colts clinch their division, the backup QB's playoff match ups are sometimes relevant:

Week 15: at home vs. Detroit Lions

Week 16: at home vs. Seattle Seahawks

Pretty favorable! Freeman is someone you can get super late in drafts, or maybe even off the waiver wire after the draft is over. Sure, he's no stud and maybe never will be, but his bye/playoff match ups are about as good as you can possibly get. I have Manning in 3 leagues and this is the guy I'm targeting as a backup.

Good luck to all! :hot:

Great stuff here. :hot:

(Not that you'd have to, necessarily, as Peyton MAY play those weeks. But in that case, you'd probably be looking in a different direction just for the sake of having a higher ceilinged backup.)

I have traded Peyton Manning when I've had him before and gotten major value, like a 2nd RB1 to go with another RB1.

If they so much as go in the finaly 3 games with a 3 game or more lead in the division or their playoff seed is sewn up, good luck, plus as you say you have to scramble for another QB late in the year or carry an extra all year long. Personally I'd rather have two strong RB1's throughout the whole year.

Love reading stuff like this.  Also love the facts that Freeman just happens to be the guy I'm stashing in dynasty behind Peyton.

Nice post.

Drafted Peyton late 2nd in a draft over the weekend. Also took a flyer on Josh Freeman in the 15th rd because of his matchup vs the Rams in Week 7 (Peyton's BYE)

I did not notice Freeman's schedule for Weeks 15 & 16 - that's a nice lil bonus.

The Colts resting starters at the end of the season is certainly a possibility.

I like your thinking, and thank you for your research. Not so sure I want to rely on Freeman as my QB for the playoffs, though.
Yeah, now. But what if he has a good season. I see him as pretty close to Flacco, just he's a year behind in the career arc.
If he turns out to be close to Joe Flacco, then he's a steal no matter what. I'm not seeing it, hence my comment that I wouldn't want him leading my playoff run.

No, I understand that, what I'm saying is that you'll have 10 weeks of games to watch before that happens.

not to hijack, but brady is off week 5 when stafford plays at home vs st louis. money in the bank. this is the route i took

True enough. I just fear that if I'm correct, then I'm going to end up stuck with Matt Leinart or somebody at QB when I have to raid the WW at the last moment for my Manning replacement.

GREAT post. I actually took Freeman in the last round of our draft Saturday night. I only looked for week 7 bye week plays, and love the matchup at home vs. the Rams. Didn't look at the playoffs. My sincere hope is that a) I get that far and b) the Colts have something to play for in week 16. But it's hard to see Freeman not doing something at home vs. the Rams..Great call.

I think Freeman is a good bet to outplay his overall ADP this year. Strength of Schedule can change significantly by Week 14, but regardless I think he'll be worth a shot later in the draft.

And for those with Drew Brees . . .

I picked up Eli Manning, who can usually be had late (ADP 08.03) or for cheap money, and he plays DAL during Drew's BYE.

If you look at his regular season history against DAL it's pretty nice...

Comp - Att - Yards - TDs - INTs

2007

28 41 312 4 1

23 34 236 1 2

2008

16 27 147 3 1

18 35 191 0 2

2009

25 38 330 2 0

11 25 241 2 1

His week 15 - 16 match-ups are PHI GB, who give up a lot of fantasy passing points per game (ranked 10th and 8th most passing fantasy points given up last season).

Not as cheap as Freeman or Stafford, but a good relatively cheap back-up.

Excellent thread by the OP. I had Peyton last year and made it to the Super Bowl. I lost it because I didn't have a back up. By the time I scrambled to find one, no one was left. It cost be several hundred dollars. Thanks for the post.

Good stuff!

Would you rather have Freeman or Orton?

Orton might not be a stud, but he and his WRs are more established than Freeman and the TB pass game. I know Gaffney, Royal, et al. don't scare anyone...

DEN plays OAK twice and at HOU during Peyton's and Schaub's bye and weeks 15-16.

so... orton or freeman?

If you're drafting Peyton Manning, depending on your roster size, you shouldn't be drafting a backup. Worrying about him not playing week 16 is foolish. It's not very often a team will go into week 16 with the conference clinched. Don't overthink it and use the roster spot for a high upside RB/WR. When week 7 starts rolling around you can worry about the one week you won't be using Peyton Manning this year.
