Some bad football this season. (1 Viewer)

My pet theory is that all the concussion stuff has fewer parents letting their kids play football, and we're finally seeing the consequences at the pro level. There are some standouts, but the talent pool is shallow at many positions. QB has some of the worst play I've ever seen. Majority of the offenses in the league seem anemic and incompetent.

One of the big narratives in FF the last decade has been the devaluation of the RB position, but also I just look around the league and see a lot less talent there than in the 00s. Even when you factor in the few great backs we've had in this era, the cupboard is still relatively bare. It was always my favorite position to evaluate/watch, and now it's a bit of a wasteland.

I don't think this was necessarily a "players were so much better in my day" post. But the OP was a bit vague. :-)

I thought I'd look up all the QBs from 20 years ago, week 9 2003. So no cherry-picking. Here are all the matchups with leading passer and passing yds.

Delhomme 193 Banks 154
Leftwich 208 Boller 156
Mirer 125 Harrington 117
K.Collins 303 Pennington 281
P.Manning 266 Griese 231
Flutie 70 (Brees 49) Chandler 224
Brooks 142 B.Johnson 323
Kitna 218 Blake 166
Maddox 226 Hasselbeck 215
McNabb 312 D.Johnson 86 (Kittner 78)
Ramsey 147 Q.Carter 196
Bulger 378 Rattay 236
Favre 194 Culpepper 202
Brady 350 Kanell 163

Ah the glory days of NFL offense.

Think teams are really buying into completely tanking vs putting out a 6-10 team / product like the Riveras and the Frank Reichs of the world. That's how you stay in mediocrity. Until something changes with QB play, roster management, draft pick order / randomness, this will continue for a while.

Players and coaches can't really tank in the NFL. They get cut or fired way too easily so there's no incentive to go along with an owner trying to tank. Even when they do go along with it, they can still get fired (Dougie P 2020).

I think we just have really bad coaches combined with an overzealous officiating staff leading to a really bad product to watch at times.

I can't remember a time when the bottom of the league composed of probably over half the teams.
Every year since the leagues existence.

It always seemed like there were 3 or 4 super teams and then like 8-10 can beat anyone on any given Sunday teams and then the rest of the slop. Now it seems like there aren't any super teams, but you still have the 8-10 on any given Sunday teams and the rest is slop.

As they try to take hitting out of a sport that is built around hitting you will have consequences whether it is too many penalties/too many rules and players not able to practice their craft as much as they should...there is now a disconnect because of this...also, the QB position has become so important so that if you don't have a good to very good one it has a dramatic effect on the team as a whole that is almost impossible to overcome.

Butkus is rolling over in his grave.

Sunday ticket through YouTube is terrible.
Gotta say I've been pretty disappointed in YouTube's ability to consistently provide a quality streaming experience. I like the interface now that I'm used to it, but I could do without the spurts of buffering and lapsed picture quality.

It seems to be getting worse every week
I haven't had any issues with the streaming experience. I actually think it's been a pretty good product and haven't had any issues. Now Bally Sports Network App on the other hand has been terrible.

Ah the glory days of NFL offense.
I miss the top end RBs of those days. When guys got 25 carries on the regular.

It's hard to say why, obviously lots of factors. I don't think it's the lack of youth playing football (the concussion effect) just because there hasn't been enough time yet. That may come.

I'm going to throw my hat in the ring and say the main reason is rules changes.

I think the NFL has slowed the game down and made it too complex and boring with terrible calls. They are attempting to create more offense, but rather than do so intelligently are being hamfisted.

How many terrible roughing the passer calls do we need to see? A hand grazes a QB's helmet? 15 yards! A DL doesn't magically teleport his body to the side? 15 yards! Never mind the opposite - the atrocious missed calls like the one that sent the Rams to the Super Bowl they lost.

It's not the ref's fault. The NFL rulebook has become far too complicated and subjective. It severely ruins my enjoyment and I rarely watch single games now as it is too frustrating. There are so many flags, and so many bad flags.

Instead, the NFL should do what it did in 2020 - the highest scoring NFL season since 1965. Just allow more holding! Get rid of the stupid roughing the passer penalties and ease up on DPI. Let players play. But do ease up on holding like in 2020. See here: https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2020-10-05/nfl-penalties-down-scoring-offense-up-2020

That's it. The game will become so much better. For young QBs, they'll have more time in the pocket. The bad OL's we see everywhere now will magically get better, reducing QB injuries.

P.S. If you really want to improve scoring and excitement without ANY rules changes: widen the field a few feet. I've been saying this for over a decade. Go look at the CFL. It means (a) more offense and (b) fewer injuries. Why? Because players have more space and you have far more open field tackles - which cause far less injuries because guys can't hit stick, they need to break down and drag a guy down.

Spread your peanut butter thin enough it won't taste like peanut butter anymore...

The NFL needs to get back to the basics before the league implodes. Problem is, greed reigns supreme.

Interesting idea. I like it. Unfortunately I am not so sure that NFL defenses know how to break down and tackle anymore...But that would just lead to more offense anyway. win-win.

I do find my interest in Football progressively waning.

Terrible officiating. Games that legit seem scripted and fixed with all of the gambling.

Too many bad teams. Not enough good QB play.

It’s almost time to have Tiers. Bottom teams have to fight to get back into the Premiere league.

I think it will always be a bunch of bad teams now as more teams realize tanking is something they are interested in

Good thoughts and I’ll also add in I think DL talent has far surpassed OL talent. OL talent isn’t keeping up. Hard to watch when a QB is seeing heavy pressure 2 seconds after he snaps the ball.

2 high safeties not allowing deep plays down the field has also turned it into more dink and dunk, which is hard to watch. I thought I saw a stat a a couple years ago that YPA among QBs has been dropping the past few seasons, but don’t quote me on that.

Uncreative play callers hired solely due to nepotism, too many flags ruining the flow of the game, bad QB play, I could go on and on and some good examples already stated in this thread

Feel like there is a lack of gunslingers at QB position anymore too. It’s pretty much became a dying breed with the heavy emphasis on protecting the football. Aaron Rodgers probably ruined it for all when people obsessed over his low INT numbers and now it’s a huge thing.

Josh Allen is a perfect example. Probably my favorite QB in the league to watch but he’s criticized heavily for his turnovers. Give me the Allen’s, Jameis Winston’s, Matt Stafford’s, Brett Favre’s, and Jay Cutler‘s of the world man (probably missing a few gunslingers too just rattled off a few).

David Klingler had that nickname coming out of college.

Sam Howell.

Guy was throwing it all over the place yesterday. Not afraid to sling it in the endzone.

Agreed, incentive to (soft) tank is too strong now with the cap and draft structures. Might need to install a lottery for non-playoff teams like in the NBA.

That said, I feel that programs that really get it would never tank, even softly. They play to win all the time and know their culture depends on it. That said, those programs are rarely down and out for long.

College games yesterday were much more entertaining than today's pro games.
I used to have it with DirecTV and each game had it's own channel. My friend has it through YouTubeTV and says he has to wait for one game to end before he can watch another game. Is he doing something wrong, or is that the way it is now?
