I based my original answer on that. I thought the investigation was done.
If there were more years' receipts to go through still I would've investigated those first and THEN interviewed him with all your cards in your pocket.
There are many techniques you can use to get them to admit to what you already KNOW they've done. It's not easy nor should that responsibility be taken lightly. The trick is to use that information to get them to admit to EVERYTHING they've done, including things you don't know about but they're sure you do.
Once you show them your evidence it changes everything. That's why I skipped this portion above. In instances regarding employee theft, remember not to reveal what you know unless you absolutely have to and don't ask any questions unless you are prepared to deal with the answer. One way to start such conversations is with a simple statement such as, "Is there anything you want to tell me?"
He cant fire the guy... Always Be Closing leaves little time for anything elseHow did the superior allow himself to be rooked? Salesdude is unethical but ambitious, superior is apathetic? If you don't can salesdude, you are establishing a very cutthroat environment which may be good for competition among the salesmen, but will destroy any morale/collaboration within the workplace. I am not a salesguy, so maybe that is not a bad thing - but it would be a terrible environment in which to work for a non-salesperson.
Is this serious? Firing someone for stealing is not establishing a "cutthroat environment". In fact, Id go the opposite direction and say not firing someone is making the environment a much worse place to work. Additionally, if I owned the place and found out he wasn't fired, the guy that should have fired him would have his butt on the line as well. How did the superior allow himself to be rooked? People don't selectively break the rules. Those who are willing to break one are willing to break many. You'll never be able to trust him as FN said. You (the OP) said you were surprised so many are recommending termination. I'm surprised you expected anything else. This is about as much of a no-brainer as there is.I owned a small business for a few years. I learned a lot, but the one lesson I learned that stuck with me the most is that people who have low morals that steal, lie, or deceive, will do it again and again and again. If you just give them a slap on the wrist, you're only teaching them that they can get away with it without consequence.
