Some Republicans want to cancel State of the Union? (1 Viewer)

You guys seriously watch the state of the union? Its the golden age of television and you're watching that.
There is usually a thread on it here, with most of the participants conservatives, who attempt to sound really witty, but instead come across as a lame attempt at a political version of Mystery Science 3000.
So who on this board would play the 3 Mystery Science 3000 participants. Btw, that show is awesome to watch stoned. I could watch that and Bob Ross all day long.
I dunno, there are several promising candidates...

The most amusing year (or the most pathetic depending on your perspective) had MOP and BoneYardDog chiming in with their profound observations on what Obama had to say.
Ah yeah, BoneYardDog. He was entertaining.

Tom Servo would be an obvious casting choice.

I think the real goal is to prevent the three or so Republican responses we are now up to for each Obama SOTU. This will be three less people sending their chances for higher office in flames, ala Jindal and Rubio.

Why are you guys bothering to argue with GrandpaRox?
I just choked on irony.

Why? Am I a racist? Have I made ridiculously idiotic comments which I refuse to defend? I've been insulted plenty around here, but comparing me to GrandpaRox is about as low a blow as I have ever received.

Um, no, you are not racist, just the last person on earth who should lecture others about arguing with Gramps.

The question that GrandpaRox won't answer is why we were not giving Afghanistan our full attention after 9/11. And instead under President Bush we went to Iraq and got how many Americans and Iraqis that were killed, and continue to be killed because we destabilized the area. But hey keep blaming Obama for your problems and not accepting personal responsibility.
They continue to keep dying and ISIS has taken the country because Obama pulled us out.
So it's his fault when troops are in harm's way and also his fault when they are not. Got it. Good logic.

Good point. I can't remember the last republican responder who didn't embarrass themselves.

nah. I know perfectly well what my reputation is among some people here. I just think it's undeserved.

It says to the nation, this is your political leadership. They have their differences, but once a year they assemble to hear what the president has to say. Their presence is an implicit validation of the entire political structure and the president’s place atop it.
I agree with this. People want to see this. Not shouts of "liar" from the field or the president chastising the USSC right in front of him. I don't think some Congressmen understand this, Democratic or Republican, they have been acting like idiots. The GOP specializes in this kind of thing though, like the Terry Schiavo thing.

Congress should think and realize that R or D its power as a body has been cut away like a diamond, and it's now left some former facet or image of what it used to be or could be. If Congress tried to do things to get its popularity and favorability ratings back up it would help both parties and make our country better. And for the Goppers who complain about the imperial nature of Obama's presidency (and the Demos who complained about Bush's and whoever is the next Gop president) it would behoove them to strengthen their own power and branch so they are not leaving such a vacuum for the president to step into in the first place.

I disagree with SID for once. The imperial presidency has been going on since the progressive days of Wilson and then especially FDR, and we have a Constitutional Amendment (caps?) that supposedly did but really didn't address it. It has nothing to do with a power vacuum between branches. Those branches were damn near packed, usurped, and threatened to be discarded by those two. I actually think the Least Dangerous Branch lived up to its name in 1937, and we've been getting ####ed since. That's our Maginot Line, and we'll never live it down, IMO.

And if I keep having to bang keyboards about 1937, then ####### it, I will do just that.

1. I certainly am.

2. Absolutely not. I rarely post about my personal life. My posts are mainly "look at the issue".

3. No. I have gone overboard a little in that, but certainly not to the extent that you and others claim.

4. When I deny it, it's worth denying. On some issues I am very liberal. On others I am quite conservative. On others I take the middle road.

5. I never forget the arguments I made. I am easily swayed by facts I was unaware of, and sometimes good argument as well. I'm amazed anyone wouldn't be.

6. Absolutely guilty!

7. I am as trusting as it makes sense to be in the specific situation.

8. I am as distrustful as it makes sense to be in the specific situation.

9. Never. My opponents on various issues, however, do it all the time, including you.

10. Sometimes I find myself setting up straw men and I try to stop. I wouldn't say it's a continual thing with me. That alias you mention was one time, for a few days, several years back. Hardly a pattern there.

I've been saying this for years (before Obama was President). It isn't necessary and is a waste of time, resources and doesn't do anything at all.

You guys seriously watch the state of the union? Its the golden age of television and you're watching that.
I do! But I am a political geek. I will say that there's usually lots of fun commentary on Twitter.

And there's always one cabinet member who, as the "designated survivor," does not attend the SOTU. It rotates each year. This article has more information and comments from past designated survivors: http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/state-union-designated-survivor-demystified/story?id=21637341

He can use the extra time to figure out how to get more Americans killed. One thousand, six hundred, fifty seven (1657), in Afghanistan alone since Dear Leader took office.
US military deaths are down by about 60% since Obama took office. Sounds like he used all his extra time to figure out how to get fewer Americans killed.
Yeah. It's called unilateral retreat. ISIS thanks you.

I long for the day a president voluntarily submits it in writing again and we get away from the "Caesar" trappings it has become.
:goodposting:

I'm old enough to remember a time before televised State of the Union addresses and life went on just fine before them. For that matter, there were no State of the Union speeches at all from 1801 through 1913. The preening progressive that was Woodrow Wilson decided to undo the tradition of written messages to Congress established by Thomas Jefferson who deemed the practice of presidential proclamations before assembled American lawmakers too kinglike. The march toward an imperial presidency continues. The question now is has this nation already crossed its own proverbial Rubicon?

Good list. Last one is the worst.

They just don't request that he does not get one.

It is not his right. All he does is turn it political. It is no State of the Union anymore. Obama turned it into a political agenda speech. I absolutely would not invite him to give the opportunity.
And how would such a move benefit the Republican party?
Wont have to sit there and watch him say how he is listening to the 66% of the Americans that DID NOT vote, we don't have to watch him stand there and chastise the Supreme Court.

The most truthful of any of his State of the Unions was when Rep. Joe Wilson interrupted Obama during a Sept. 9, 2009, speech to a joint session of Congress. As Obama was saying health care reform would not cover illegal immigrants, Wilson shouted, “You lie!”

The only truth you will hear at one of these.
California Senate Votes To Open Up Obamacare To 2.5 Million Illegal Residents...State Senator Richard Lara has already moved a bill through the California State Senate that would allow illegal immigrants to buy unsubsidized health insurance in the state’s Obamacare exchange. The state would have to receive a federal waiver from the Obama administration before implementing it.

The bill would also extend coverage to illegal residents under the age of 19 to enroll in California’s fully paid-for Medicaid program.

The Pew Research Center has estimated that there are 2.5 million illegal immigrants in California.

...And consider this. Passage of SB 4 could be a real boon to the business of health care delivery in California. California’s impressive medical system could be the leader in international medical tourism.

SB 4 would also make it clear that a foreign person could land at LAX, give Covered California a call and sign up for an almost full pay Platinum plan for a few hundred dollars a month, on the first of the following month when their coverage became effective show up at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and have thousands of dollars of treatment, get back on the plane and go home, and then drop the coverage.

SB 4 doesn’t have any requirements for how long a person has to be in the country to enjoy these benefits. All SB 4 says is, “No individual in California should be excluded from obtaining coverage through the California Health Benefit Exchange by reason of immigration status.”

I haven't watched that address in years, because no matter what happens, invariably the party the President belongs to will stand up and cheer every point they make, whereas the other party will sit stone silent, and when it's all over and the President has their ego stroked enough, the opposing party will send in a rebuttal, which is just as annoying as the original speech.

I'd rather spend that time watching Dirty Jobs reruns.

I think Squizz's point was excellent.... but I have to say I didn't expect you of all people to say Rep. Joe Wilson was right.

Or is this just another example of Obama having no idea what's in his own policy initiatives?

No, I'm sure Obama didn't intend for it to be extended to illegals, so Joe Wilson was wrong.

But it's still a good idea. There are public health concerns to be addressed. At the very least, they should receive immunizations from measles, tuberculosis, etc.

Ok so he doesn't have a clue about his own policies. He's not lying because he has no idea what his own laws he's promoting actually say. I'm starting to believe you may be right about that.

The rebuttal is the most entertaining part of the evening. I couldn't take Marco Rubio seriously after he tried to casually drink some water that was beyond arm's length (which SNL parodied, it was that inept). Bobby Jindal political career never recovered after an entrance was something out of Vivien Leigh from A Streetcar Named Desire. And this year Joni Ernst looking like a Stepford Wife and speaking as if she had some weird form of Tourette's that caused her to randomly emphasize words in a sentence.

I'm gonna say that Rubio can recover, speaking skills can be fixed or coached, like Bill Clinton. However, Jindal, a smart guy really, just says some dumb things, that cannot be fixed.

:lmao: almost forgot about that...that is still hilarious
This can't be true.
Tim has confessed to this. I forgot the details of the alias since it has been a few years back, but absolutely true.
Pretty sure it was this one:
